  3. thank you so much for the link and for not taking offence its very interesting to find what is out there that others are accessing which is, of course, why i took the questions raised to the best two asd/aspergers forums I know its interesting to see however, even when fully trained, the dogs will not be recognised as assistance dogs for entrance into shops resturants theatres cinemas buses etc which is exactly what my group were saying were the most likely situations that theyd need the assistance the dog brings them
  4. interesting to read, this is the scheme we looked at, http://www.support-dogs.org.uk/AADogs.htm it actually stops, according to the website, at age 10 and having another dog in the house is one of the exclusions for being accepted on the course can i ask,[with no offence meant, this is a fact finding thread really to take back to the group] IF the dog is being trained on the understanding it is for your daughter, but you, an adult, are going to take it on, do you not feel that is somewhat 'cheating' the purpose of the scheme in general? do you have a link to the PAWS course please thank you
  5. hi all after a meeting with some people with and about ASD, young adults with HFA and Aspergers we got onto the issue of assistance dogs for ASD sufferers [? hate that expression but not sure of a more appropriate one, sorry]and the positive actions and reactions they can bring but that unlike dogs for the deaf, guide dogs or assistance dogs for physically disabled people, they are not recognised out and about as the invaluable tool they are My current foster dog and the ones that have moved on have 'worked' with ASD children and young adults, meeting them, overcoming fears, being pulled around [the dog not the person on the spectrum], being covered in doggie drool [ i foster mastiff and mastiff x breeds] having eyes ears feet mouths teeth all investigated being licked from head to toe, been on supervised walks with them, fed and groomed then etc and have had positive feedback and results from both the dogs and the humans we were able to find one specific assistance dog training scheme for children on the spectrum, but the age range was limited to 3-10 year olds, the young adults in the discussion group felt that at that age the children would still be with their parents a lot and wouldnt necessarily have the want to socialise, make friends and go out independantly, which they felt a dog would help them with Does anyone here have a dog that works with their person on the spectrum? does anyone know of a scheme aimed at young adults? has anyone trained their own dog to work /assist their young adult with ASD? would anyone actually be interested in such a scheme? thank you
  6. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your messages of condolences It has been a great comfort to read this thread and has made us all feel very proud and humble that Phas was counted a friend by so many people We have asked Lufty, after the funeral on Monday, to unpin this thread to allow it to fade into the ether and peoples memories and, if possible, to retire the name of Phasmid. Ken was Phasmid, Phasmid was Ken. Two different names, but one open, honest, loving father, brother, son, best friend, soul mate and husband. You can truly be assured that what you always got was the real Ken, the same on any forum and at home. Ken was the same however and whenever you met him Thank you to all who have emailed/pm'd or sent cards to us and to those whom I have managed to find the words to reply to, please know that those words came from my heart and were meant with all my soul. To those whom I havent, rest assured I will endevour to do so To all of you that Ken and I were proud to call friends, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. This will be my final post on this forum, so I wish you all well and safe journey upon where ever your future paths take you and yours Always proud to be known as Mrs Phasmid and the phaslets

  10. Definition of looked after child http://www.everychildmatters.gov.uk/social...dafterchildren/ It boils down to this though Children who are in the care of local authorities are described as 'looked-after children', under section 31 of the Children Act 1989 or under section 20 of the Children Act 1989 If your child receives overnight stays it does not mean that your child is ?in care?, but they will be classed as ?looked after? and will have regular reviews [by law] to ensure that the service provided is meeting the needs of both your child and you. So because you are having overnight respite, your Local Authority is doing the correct thing by having a LAC review The nitty-gritty of LAC reviews are decided by each LA, but, generally, should roughly boil down to this [please remember that this is mainly referring to children under section 31/20, but encompasses overnight respite too] What is a Looked After Children (LAC) Review? It is a legal requirement that children who are looked after by the social services must be reviewed regularly. A LAC Review is a meeting which is held to get people together to share information and to make plans about a child's placement. The purpose of a LAC Review to make sure that the care plan for each child continues to be appropriate and that the child's needs are being met. Only a LAC Review can change the care plan. Therefore the main reason for having a LAC Review is to make sure that everything possible is being done so that the child can grow up to be healthy, happy, secure and confident. What part do parents play with a LAC Review? Parents almost always have an important part in any LAC Review. Most parents continue to have a high level of responsibility and influence about their child's upbringing even when they are looked after by the local authority and are not living at home. Most parents want to remain involved and informed about what is happening in the life of their child. Therefore it is important that parents attend the review and contribute to the discussion about their child. How often are LAC Reviews held? The first review must be held within 4 weeks after a child becomes looked after. The second review must be held within 3 months after the first review. After this all other reviews must take place within every 6 months. Reviews can be held earlier than these time periods, if necessary, and dates can be brought forward if needed. HTH
  11. I dont normally post on this site anymore, but someone pointed me in the direction of your other thread and this one to help you clarify Offensive Weapons Act 1996 4. - (1) After section 139 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (offence of having article with blade or point in public place) there is inserted- "Offence of having article with blade or point (or offensive weapon) on school premises. 139A. - (1) Any person who has an article to which section 139 of this Act applies with him on school premises shall be guilty of an offence. (2) Any person who has an offensive weapon within the meaning of section 1 of the Prevention of Crime Act 1953 with him on school premises shall be guilty of an offence. That covers pretty much any bladed tool, but allows for common-sense application. However, it does remove the possibility that normally legal carries [ie contractors] are allowed in schools too. At least, that's the interpretation I have been given by the police. As for the 3" rule... Criminal Justice Act 1988 139.?(1) Subject to subsections (4) and (5) below, any person who has an article to which this section applies with him in a public place shall be guilty of an offence. (2) Subject to subsection (3) below, this section applies to any article which has a blade or is sharply pointed except a folding pocketknife. (3) This section applies to a folding pocketknife if the cutting edge of its blade exceeds 3 inches. (4) It shall be a defence for a person charged with an offence under this section to prove that he had good reason or lawful authority for having the article with him in a public place. Under (4) your husband did have good reason to have it with him, he was returning it to its rightful owner [at the very least] Note: ANY bladed tool other than a folding pocket knife of 3" or less. So... technically a Stanley knife isn't allowed. Nor a fixed blade knife of 1" length (such as a scapel used in the school biology lab). But, again, common sense should (and of course, does ) prevail. Hope that helps clarify things somewhat

  13. oh hev you have my deepest sympathy id be getting on to emergency SW straight away Nic could be in all sorts of trouble depending on what steve says, so he needs some sort of legal representation [even just for questions] for his own protection and PoM who is with steve to make sure they realise theyre not only dealing with a minor but one who's vunerable and asd too. Someone who can help them with his background? He shouldnt be interviewed without a responsible adult anyway and because of his vunerabilities hes not deemd able [under law] to decline one anything he says without a responsible adult, one trained in dealing with children with his problems, is totally inadmissable huge hugs hun <'>
  14. yes i quite agree there will always be some that break the rules. unfortuantely that is human nature[in some people] the reason i spoke about not being able to see who the badge is for is that the badge should be dislayed photo side down[believe me an, almost, expensive lesson to learn] so the issue number and expiry date can be clearly seen by all. hence then you would actually have to ask someone to see it, and yes i have had that too. what i was getting at is the pervasive stereo typical view, that only wheechair users are issued with a blue badge as does phas but agian he would never use it unless i was there, it is just not right, as well as being unlawful and maybe costing the badge holder their much needed badge. the only thing i would wish is that they would issue more than one, the amount of times we've nipped out in phas car[being smaller and nipper] and then found we left the badge in mine, a great lunking disabilty minibus with a ramp and a *burger* to park or 'nip' anywhere in
  15. thank you curra, i know what your son means though phas jr reckons its just to much hassle to go out in town bullying as a word when an assualt has taken place belittles what has happened. if a child hits an adult it is asault if a child hits a child it is bullying joyriding as an expression for taking and driving away without consent, has been dropped from usage lets get the word bullying dropped too assault is assault wherever it takes place and to whom ever. lets start calling it that people power works IF enough people use it repeated following and harrasment comes under the new antistalking measures use them a school is just another building. not a magical place ruled by a magical king[although most HT would have you believe that] the manager of your local woolies cant stop you calling the police if your child was harrassed or assaulted within their premises, dont let the manager [HT] of the school do it either. their not there to protect your child but to protect the reputation of their school for your chiildrens sake lets put a stop to it now. sorry every one, can you tell im a bit passionate about it? ETA Can i just point out, we live in a small sleepy market town, with long historic links, in deepest, sleepy suffolk, where time has a completely different pace to the rest of the world. not some urban inner city tower ghetto, with graffitti and dealers on every corner. so showing that demographics have no relenvance to whose child can be one of these little
