  1. my son is 12 and on desmopressin for night wetting! he still occasionally wets but not even once a month now.. it's been a huge help! our pediatrician prescribed it for him! and now sometimes in the night he even gets up all by himself and goes to the bathroom!!
  2. we don't stop wade from ticking or flapping.. his neurologist in the states said that when brought to their attention it could cause them more stress and cause them to unintentionally do it even more! flapping is something alot of autistic children do.. it's thier way of subconsciously relieving stress or self stimulating.. in my opinion, wade needs this for his sanity so to speak. It's his bodies way of letting off steam as such!

    Introductions!!

Hi there! welcome... look forward to chatting with ya!
  4. <'> i was in exactly the same situation 4 years ago hon... my life revolved around work and my kids.. i never went out...never dated, had no social life, only friends from work etc etc etc then i met hubby online..told him about wade's ASD, He didn't bat an eyelash...his mother is bi-polar... we talked online for almost a year, spent tons on phone bills, then 3 years ago i came across the pond for 6 months to see how it'd be..brought wade with me.. fell in love, wade fell in love, he fell in love with wade and my meatloaf , we got married.. and that was 2 1/2 years ago.. I didn't think I'd ever find anyone to live with wade much less love him like I did... plus I'm no beauty queen and certainly could ummmm never look good in a bikini! I had decided that the most i'd ever have was the occasional date and then they'd meet wade and run like hell.. let's face it, ASD kids are no picnic! But i got my fairy tale and wade loves Paul as if he were his biological father and Paul loves wade as if he were his biological son...(hubbies mum even says wade acts like hubby did when he was a kid!) chin up hon..hell if it could happen to me..it can happen to anyone! *huge hugs*
  5. <'> i remember wade had a supply teacher once when he was about 8...she was bent down in his face pointing her finger at him and scolding him and he looked up at her and simply said "your breath stinks"... needless to say she was not impressed. I tried not to laugh when she told me and meekly apologized *whispering* her breath really did stink! our children haven't learned sometimes words, no matter how true or untrue can hurt people's feelings..they seem to just say whatever pops into thier minds.. sorry it's been such a bad start to half term..hang in there hon! <'>
  6. *puzzled look* usually epsom salts do help them to relax... i'm not sure hon... what about that radoc relax bath stuff? I think they have a few different ones along the "calm, sleep, relax" lines? also, not sure about here, but in the states Johnson's do a baby bath which is suppose to be relaxing and calming?

    bank holiday

welllll wade has got the whole day planned.. it seems that disney cinematic (new channel on here) has "Finding Nemo" and "The Incredibles" showing tomorrow..so I think He has decided he is hunkering down in front of the TV for the day..meanwhile I'll be online, cleaning, doing laundry and cooking! so a quiet day in...plus as per norm it's suppose to rain here.. (it always does on Bank Holidays for some reason*L*)
  8. <'> <'> hon you should see my house..wade is the same way..the other day he destroyed hubbie's tape measure cuz he was pulling it out so far and inspecting it that it broke.. we have the constant battle too of straightening out and sorting.. you are not alone.. *hugs* i've just gotten to where lately I do it once in a while and try to keep things semi-organized but have thrown in the towel as far as having everything perfect all the time. (plus I hate housework! ) in my opinion it's sorta contradictory..because they do best in orderly organized situations and routines yet when playing they are so very disorganized and if left to it they end up making huge messes!! at least wade is anyway... not sure of any advice i can offer.. just know you aren't alone in this seemingly endless battle with the toys! *hug*
  9. wade went through the chewing thing when he was about 7, he would come home from school and his shirt would have huge holes in it..(thank god for charity shops!) we'd sometimes go through 2-3 shirts a day and I can't tell you how many i just sewed back together because he was driving me to bankruptcy in clothing! he still picks at his clothes (ie: pulling strings or picking at fluff) what helped us was gum and in the states thet OT gave him a chew tube.. which was esentially rubber tubing that hung around his neck loosely like a necklace and when he got the urge he could chew it..a few kids in his special needs class had them so he wasnt alone. but gum was a huge help because it curbed his need to chew his clothes..although we had to be careful he didnt' take the gum out and play with it and end up with THAT all over his clothes rather than holes!
  10. Isn't it wonderful that the rest of the world knows how to cure our children's AS and is willing to tell us?? People really do mean well with the snippets so sometimes we just have to grin and bear it. Hubby has a friend who is a "know it all" and is constantly trying to tell us what wade can and can't help behavious wise. He's left a few times miffed because we basically told him he didn't know what he was talking about and unless he'd researched it and actually lived with a child like we do, to keep his ideas to himself!!
  11. from an american viewpoint, it's truly sad because they knew this when Wakefield published his studies back 8 years ago, and now the US has their own studies, and the sad thing is, in order for your children to be able to go to school over there they have to have had this vaccine! so in other words, give your child something that could potentially harm them and change the rest of thier lives, or don't educate them, in which case you are going to jail! It's sickening!!
  12. hope you have a terrific day!!
  13. YAY!!! all hail to those that fixed it!
  14. that is sooooooooo wonderful!! I know you must be soooo proud!
  15. hang in there hon! <'>
  16. Jill, sometimes wade comes home after a bad day at school in a right state. though most days he just comes home and loses himself in the TV or the computer. however, if he does not get that time to immerse himself in those things, watch out!!!! all hell breaks loose! sometimes when he's been particularly well behaved or has controlled himself from being impulsive a great deal we will get what we refer to as "backlash". for instance, we went to see The Da Vinci code, which wade sat through very well and only fidgeted a little bit. But later that night..OMG, he was rude and mouthy and had a right attitude! we've come to sort of expect this after such constraining things so it's nothing new for us. We try to understand this is bound to happen and just accept it.
  17. Karen, One of Wade's obsession is and always has been dinosaurs. He reads everything he can get his hands on, when he looks at the clouds in the sky rather than seeing "a fluffy oval cloud", he will says, "hey mom, that looks like an allosaurus!".. my viewpoint, and this may be the wrong way to think, is that there are worse things he could be obsessed with. At one point I was his obsession. No one could even get close to me without him throwing a fit and clinging tighter to me. His sister, (who is 2 years older) would try to sit next to me on the sofa and wade would crowd in between us. He even at one point began to do things to try to harm her because he felt that she was a threat to him in regards to the fact that she was my child too. Thank god my parents were supportive and helped to take her places etc. That, I viewed, was a dangerous obsession. We've always encouraged wade's obsession with dinosaurs. He wants to be a paleantologist when he grows up. The way we feel about it is, if it's his obsession anyway he may very well become successful in that career if he uses his obsession in a productive way. There was an article a few years back about the silicon valley (near San Francisco) rate of diagnosis of kids with asperger's. The experts were speculating that the kids parents who worked in the computer industry, some of them were asperger's as well and they were using thier obsession with computers as a career. Hence the boom in the rate of asperger's dx in that area. I think if an obsession can be used for the positive then wonderful! They are going to have the obsession anyway, as long as it isn't anything dangerous (for example "fire") why not capitalize on it and turn it into something that will impact them in a positive way? *wondering if that makes sense* as for the fine line between interests and obsessions, with wade anyway, He has other things he is mad about, robot wars, his gameboy, the simpsons *rolling my eyes*, and most recently this girl at school although the girl at school has turned into more of an obsession and that's a whole other topic! *sigh* I guess the way I feel, we all have things that we are overly interested in, mine is my computer, my dad's is Nascar racing, my daughters is "boys" some could classify these as obsessions, others may think they are just phases we go through. I think it's different for each person. hope this sorta answered your question
  18. *soft lil sigh, nodding* yes sometimes it hurts, and sometimes it's challenging, but then I look at him, watch him sleep and think to myself what a miracle he is and how I can't imagine life without him, without how he is, without those precious innocent moments that sometimes happen when children are autistic! I remember when wade was about 4, the cat had kittens, and he had one of those little plastic pools in the garden for swimming in. He kept throwing the kittens into the pool. I kept getting after him. Told him he was going to drowned them. finally I asked him why he was throwing them in the pool and He said to me "because mommy, it's a kiddie pool!!" (get it? kiddie=kitty) god they grow up too fast! *tearful smile*

    Panic!

thanks so much for all the support! *hugs* I'm not sure whether to be angry or elated! wade isn't the lease bit phased by it all.. and yeah he did get soaked in the rain on the way home and complained that his feet hurt I'm calling the LEA tomorrow and raising hell, his key worker called tonight and I've told her he needs to be taken to and from transport from now on. she agreed! I told them when he started there that he was prone to wandering (though it's usually closets he hides in and he's never ever before left the school grounds) maybe now they will believe me! It's sad that it takes something like this before the school listens to what the parents are saying!

    Panic!

okay I've just had the scariest moments of my life *sigh* this is only wade's second full day at school..he wet himself this morning..i knew this was being a bad day for him then the school calls back 20 mins after wade should have been home from school and he was missing!! never got into his transport and they've no idea where he is!! I've gone to the school and the police were called..2 hours later he showed up at home..He had walked home. decided he wanted to see how far it was on foot and how long it'd take him! (it's about 8 miles, it took him just under 2 hours) I can't tell you how terrified i was that something or someone happened to him..I thought i'd never see him again! why isn't someone at the school making sure he gets to his taxi ok???????????? god i am so mad and emotional right now.. when I saw him i cried my eyes out and told him i thought he was gone forever. He doesn't seem at all phased by it. The police brought me home and spoke to him but I don't think He fully understand just how dangerous what he did is!! how do i make him understand he could have been kidnapped or hurt or killed?

    Da Vinci Code

We went to see it on friday. If you have not read the book, as a film by itself, its good, very entertaining! However, they changed the ending slightly and a few other things, and left a few things out.. in my opinion the book was better *shrug* but it was a good movie.. and wade sat through it with only a little fidgeting and such!
  23. a few months ago wade had a serious bout of self degradation..He was calling himself a freak, hitting his brow with his palm and just being very down on himself. He's come home last friday and said that this girl he has a crush on at school called him an "american freak". sometimes I think they are called these things by other kids, they know they are different, so they start believing what the kids are calling them. *hugs* it's really very sad. especially for us parents to hear our children talk down about themselves when we know how very special and precious they truly are. Our kids are braver because not only do they go to school day after day where they are ridiculed and made fun of and singled out, but they do it with such courage and dignity and determination.
  24. awwww bless her i bet she got it from the new telly advert "bazooka that verucca" *L*
