  1. I have a son who is 4 and starting school in August, the Ed Psych is applying for him to attend a special school if he does not get a place he will do another year at nursery.
  2. Ewan was the perfect baby in my eyes, he slept constantly and when he was awake he was very content and happy. People used to stop me in the street to comment on him sitting in his buggy smiling out at them. He missed all the milestones but I put it down to him being premature, I thought that was why he was always a few months behind what he should have been doing. I was a bit concerned when he didn't walk but at 16 months he got up and walked down the length of the hall, not the 2 faltering steps that kids normally take when starting to walk. We laughed at the time and thought oh my goodness he has been able to walk and has just not bothered doing it. It was at his 2 year assesment that my health visitor pointed out that something wasn't right, she spotted it straight away and moved on it getting all the right people involved. Between the ages of 2 and 3 my happy little boy turned into a different child, he tantrumed for hours, banging his head on the floor and stuff, nothing I did would calm him down. He did start to speak when he was 9 months old but then he just stopped and went back to gurgling sounds. At 4 years of age my son still has very little speech, he can say the words but has no understanding of what they mean or when to use them. He is back to being the happy wee boy that he was before and very rarely has meltdowns, even when he does they don't last any longer than a NT childs tantrums. He's a great wee mimic who can copy any sound or accent he hears very accurately, he has very little imagination but loves nothing better than playing with other kids. He loves parties and noise, on the whole I would say he is a very sociable little boy but he just does not have the language to initiate play with other children. He has his little quirks and obsessions but nothing major, he pretty much defies most of what I have read about autism but he was diagnosed with highly functioning autism in Dec.05. Don't get me wrong though to read this it sounds like I don't think he is autistic, but I know for sure that he is there are lots of other things I didn't mention that when I look back now should have sounded alarm bells for me, but I just thought he was a happy, contented, lazy little boy.

  4. It's so frustrating when you want to go out and can't, my 4 year old does this too and people are always full of great advice like, I would make him go. They don't realise that our kids can't be forced or made to do anything they don't want to, bet they would soon change their opinions if it was them who was stuck in the middle of a street with their child sitting on the soaking wet ground refusing to move. My son has no problem going out with his dad cause they are going in the car, with me though I ask him can we go out today and if I get told no then there is no point in forcing the issue I know it's a waste of time. It's amazing now with him being at nursery I have over 2 hours in the afternoon to go outside and do whatever the hell I want.
  5. Wow I hate being pregnant at christmas especially when even the people online are getting drunk, yer all nuts . /me sits next to anyone drinking vodka so I can inhale it
  6. Thank you for all your good wishes, Ewan was diagnosed with high functioning autism today, it was no great shock as the paed. had prepared us for this, it's actually a relief and tonight I feel 100% better than I did last night. The great thing about the diagnosis was that Ewan did not need to be there and all the tests and observations had been done before today. His speech therapist who works with him 3 days a week at nursery is on the diagnostic team which was a great thing as she knows him really well. Both the speech therapist and the paed couldn't have been anymore helpful than they were and they let me ramble on endlessly with things I have been dying to ask for ages. They were also pretty suprised on how much I knew and I told them it was all thanks to this site .

    Gary Numan

Numan has been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome and is one of the few celebrities to have revealed this. Found that here....... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Numan#Personal_life
  8. I would just like to say a huge thank you to those who have made this board possible and to all the many contributors. I joined this board almost a year ago, I don't post as you can see from my post count, but rarely does a day pass that I don't look on here even though alot of the time I forget to log in to read. Had it not been for here I wouldn't know 90% of the info that I know now, the so called professionals have given us nothing in the way of information about autism. I now have an appointment for my son's diagnosis which is the 5th of December, and due to being on here I think I am prepared for what comes next, though I still have lots more to learn. I'm amazed by the things I read on here that relate to my son that I never realised were down to his autism, I only have one child so for me and his dad lots of his behaviour was just (for want of a better word) normal to us. I could come on here and read something and think, wow E does that. Anyway I won't go on I just wanted to express my thanks and gratitude to you all, you may never realise just what a difference you have made to this families life. <'> <'> <'> P.S to Karen, I can't remember what your full screen name is on here much for giving me the link to this board.
