genuine Windows....help!

Recommended Posts

My pc has an icon on the bottom right hand corner saying I my be the victim of software counterfeiting. When I clicked on a pop up it went to a web site that had the same weird logo claiming to be genuine Windows. The anti phishing filter doesn't work it says Microsoft online service is temorarily unavailable. Well I did have Windows the real mcoy, I mean, it was installed when I bought this pc. I did take computer in to a shop to have it fixed because it wasn't running at all, it came back working although I have to say there were a few features on it that I hadn't had before from Windows XP, like asking me if I wanted to close all tabs...

Am not very technically minded so thought I put down what I could remember. Someone please help!

Did you buy the PC mail oprder, from a shop, or from someone who builds or sells second hand PC's through the local paper?

I bought it via mail order and it has always been ok , though like I said I noticed subtle differences when it came back from the shop a few weeks ago...it had had spyware and a trojan deleted and a disc clean up.

Hi biker girl -

The 'close all tabs' thing is a new feature in Internet Explorer 7, so i guess the engineer upgraded you to that (or switched your browser to something other than IE which has tabbed browsing)

Not sure about the pop up/website business, as not enough info, but you do get a message in the task bar 'security shield' with genuine updates...

Antiphishing filter - again, new to IE7. Has it been 'disabled' in your settings? (look in the 'cog' tools icon at the top of the browser window)...

You could try connecting to microsoft update website through your start menu (you should find it there) and if it comes up with the same updates the taskbar message is probably genuine...If it doesn't, could be spy/malaware...

Have you got a spyware/malaware detector running, and are your virus definitions up to date?

If the answer to any of those three is 'no', you really do need to get something up and running...

Hope that's helpful

L&P

Hi, thanks for your replies. Did a spyware scan with spybot and luckily nothing is wrong and I'm running AVG free as recommended by computer shop.

Just spoken to person at the shop apparently a certain brand of computer also had the same problems as me via microsoft so I've just got to take it back to shop and they'll be able to sort it.

Bit of a relief was quite worried there for a moment.

Cheers guys, you're the best :notworthy:
