Respiridol dose question

Super man has been on Respiridol since May. He is on a very low dose (0.2ml twice a day) but it seems to be having an effect, most of the time.

 

I give him his first dose at 10am and the second at around 9pm. My question is, should he be having the second dose earlier? The reason I ask is because we were not told when to give the doses, just to give 2 a day. Now does Respiridol wear off after 8 hours like pain relief or is it a case of it having a culminative effect, whereby as long as he has the doses twice a day it will stay in the system?

 

I need to know is because he seems to become aggressive and anxious in the early evening. I don't know if this is caused by the drug wearing off or that he clashes with my DD.

 

I am really wondering if he needs to take it before he goes to bed. He doesn't have any anxiety in his sleep so am I giving it correctly?

 

Anyone who's kids are on this drug, when do you give it and how many doses?

It's a while ago since L was prescribed it but I seem to remember it was just the one dose given in the morning. She was on a higher dose though. (She was 16 at the time).

 

It might be worth checking with your paed whether you can give the second dose a bit earlier in the day and experiment to see what time works best and whether there's any difference in behaviour.

Like Kathryn said I would check with the Paediatrician too.

 

My son has being having two doses a day the second was originally recommended around 5pm but later changed to 8pm as he had trouble getting to sleep if he had it around five.

 

We noticed him very childlike and boystrous and in your face irritating if we left it after 8pm though. At times we both felt like screaming, if you know what I mean, and I am a very patient person, for instance, he would wind his music up full blast with no regard for us or neighbours and if told to turn it down even politely you would be told to ..... off leave me alone blah blah blah.

 

We actually didnt feel safe around him

 

That was our Paediatricians advice though. He recently upped the dose by 1/2 mg in morning and evening as he was becoming more and more unpredictable. Scarey like. Since this change he is much more relaxed, loving, and thoughtful towards us both. My daughter will sit and watch a movie with him and feels safe, and he is much more communicative in a sensible way and seems more in control of himself. More confident in his own skin. Happier. But still reclusive

My ds2 has 1mg a day and he takes it at bedtime, I think the doc told him to do that. It doesn't seem to make any difference what time of day he takes it though.

My Boy is currently taking risperidone. over the past few months we have worked with the psychiatrist on reducing the dose and we are now at 2mg per day. one in the morning first thing, and the 2nd at or around lunchtime/early afternoon. We feel that he doesn't need a later dose.

 

Further to my earlier post today Re Strattera. The psychiatrist believes that my boy (with asperger's) also has ADHD and has prescribed the strattera.

 

We are in the process of contoacting the doctor to ask whether both can be taken at the same time or should the risperidone be stopped.

 

Anyone here using both???

My son is on 0.5mg per day - one dose in the morning. I believe that the drug metabolises quickly - it doesn't have a cumulative effect. I suggest you discuss the dosage with the professional who subscribed it, it's quite normal to experiment with doses and timings until you settle on something that is effective for your child.

After 10 days on it he is calm and friendly and loving, but he does have a medicated look in his eyes so maybe the dose is too high?

Thanks, he does seem back to his old lovely self, bit worried about the high dose of resperidol though compared to everyone else, he seems fine on it and I checked with consultant this morning who assured me it was correct, anyone else got a 12yr old on such a high dose, 5mg twice a day?

that seems really high to me, my daughters nearly 14 and shes on 0.6mg twice a day. but if you've double checked and they say thats ok I suppose it must be. Don't forget that once his behaviour settles, you can ask to have it reduced slowly and see how you get on but don't alter it without consulting a professional first.

It is 0.5mg twice a day! I asked to see it today as my son is still at respite, so must have heard wrong although I double checked as thought it was high. He is home thurs so glad its sorted out. thanks.

Found out yesterday this is what is going to be suggested for M because of the problems he's been having recently.What symptoms are actually addressed by it,I mean is it an anxiety med or for behaviour/concentration ???

Haven't had our meeting yet to discuss the options and having so far managed to avoid the issue of medication its all getting a bit scary...

Hi Deedee. My dd takes it for bipolar disorder. it stabilizes her mood swings and seems to help with anxiety and her panic attacks, but it is used for other disorders too. If you ask at the next appointment the doc will give you some printed info about it to take away and read. Good luck!

Hi Deedee. My son has been on this for a while. It helps a lot with his aggression, mood and anxiety. At one point he was on 1mg per night. Now he has just one tablet in the evening ie 0.5mg. He has felt that it helps. He is 12.

Thanks Madme and Looby it helps to know others are using this too and have had positive results with it.

M seems so tiny to be even considering having to use stuff like this...but I can understand why it's been suggested now though thanks very much for your help as always
