private assessment

Recommended Posts

We are due to see CAHMS tomorrow re re assessment for what we are convinced is aspergers

We re not holding our breath tho!

and are considering private assessment by a nationally/internationally recognised expert in the aspergers field, based in a Sheffield unit who are NHS but are no longer seeing under 16s.

But this isnt til oct

The assessment at Sheffield is approx 400 , we re willing to pay, just want recognition and believe that CAHMS is not specialised enough to diagnose our son

We dont want to put him thro loads of assessment to still not have a dx, anyone have any thoughts?!

Thanks

Lisa

ps we re considering asking CAHMS what their expertise in diagnosing aspergers and if we re unconvinced going down prvate route

Lisa,

I got my daughter diagnosed privately, and everyone except the education dept recognise it.

The doctor i used is highly respected and also does nhs work but still they refuse to accept it.

I am now in the process of making them dispute it in writing in order that i can fight for appropriate services.

good luck i am sure you will get there soon

Hi Lisa -

Nic's experience is not uncommon - Many LEA's will now not acknowledge privately obtained dx's... If you can hang on for a local NHS referral it's worth the wait so you don't find yourself out on a limb and out of pocket... You called also try asking the LEA if they will accept a dx from this or that professional, but that's a bit of a double edged sword 'cos if they say 'definitely not' you're effectively stymied if it becomes necessary further down the road... That said, if they DID say 'definitely not' it would be more ammo to push for a local referral, especially if you got the backing of your local MP...

Toughie, but sadly the fact that there are a very small number of unscrupulous specialists out there gives the LEA a ready made cop out for 'blanket policies'

thanks, first cahms went v well, she asked reallly specific asd questions, seems to know stuff and son performed really well! acting as asd as is possible, even down to the funny noises he makes!

But..., tried to speak to mother in law last nigth...again..she makes me feel like Ive got munchausens! Hubbys so addled with them he s given up telling them- she just said bring him here- Ill cheer him up! and said but I dont see hes different...!!!!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Cos she sees him once a month for a day if that, she s so ant i social he doesnt even go out the house and she hardly ever sees him with other kids, all they do when he goes there is read and watch dvds

She makes me feel like Im making him different, well this assessment Joes accepting hes different and Ive asked her not to tell him he isnt if he says owt cos we ve spent two yrs being unsure

I want their support, life is flaming hard, Im finding as he approaches 13 he wants to do things less and less, just getting out house is struggle,

Ranting now, just feeling bit exhausted, its not going away, and I worry how he ll cope as gets older

Even tho deep down we know what dx is going to be I still feel rubbish, all the questions yesterday just reinforced how controlled our lives are

Sorry for rant, I love son so much

Lisa!!!
