Hello from a tired mum

Recommended Posts

Hi

Have just become a member. My 12 yr old daughter has just been diagnosed with AS and ADHD. She was diagnosed with dyspraxia aged 5. Help! She is driving me mad. I don't know how much is down to puberty and how much is the AS! She is a very odd child, but I adore her, don't even know where to begin with all her rather odd behaviours, so today I will just say Hi, and when I have got my head around things will get back. It is nice to know though that I am not the only mum on the planet, who is dealing with this.

Hi and welcome. :) I'm an adult female, HFA, dyspraxia, and others!

I don't know how much is down to puberty and how much is the AS!

Ahh, the ever asked, never solved question!!! And of course you'll get 'teenager' to add to that mix very soon (do girls have a 'Kevin' phase?)

I hope you find us welcoming - you'll find lots of peeps who've been in your situation and are asking similar things :)

Hi harmony - welcome to the forum :)

How much down to puberty/how much AS?

I haven't had to live through this myself yet, and mine's a boy so... BUT - All the peeps I know who have lived through it, AS or NT say it's hell, and considering everything that's going on mentally at that age (let alone all the other stuff!) I guess it's perfectly 'normal' - whatever that means :)

Take your time settling in, and i'm sure someone on the forum will have some first hand experience to pass on when you're ready

It was the most difficult time for us with our daughter, now 21. I wish she had been diagnosed then because a lot of things would have been tackled differently. She also had quite an odd reaction to starting her periods (PM me if you want).

Yesterday I was reading Tony Atwood's book "Asperger's and Girls". There are several first hand accounts of going through puberty with AS and advice on how to handle it. If you havent read it yet, I advise it. I got mine from Amazon Marketplace and I think it cost about 6.

I do know what you are going through. The difficulties with our daughter had a huge impact on our family life and unfortunately a very negative effect on both our personal relationships and my mental health. But there is no reason why it should be quite so bad for you if you are prepared. We weren't.

Hi Harmony, welcome to the forum >:D<<'>

AS and puberty.... not to put too fine a point on it is a pain in the bottom! I have a 14 year old son going through this and I saw a massive down turn in his ability function when the hormones started to kick in.

I have AS too, and looking back on my teenage years they are like a blurr in my memory, but according to my mother 'I was a nightmare'.

Hope you find some answers here.

Hi I know well the tired bit all too well, Im exhausted too, what you posted I can relate to, maybe the difficulties with your daughter is because she has whats called a co morbid and will have many difficulties in different areas of her development, belieive me when I say this I know that under neath she will be trying like mad to do what it is you are wanting from her, J tries so hard I know he does, its just that the results for him are slower and if and when he fails tasks it really does upset him the frustration is very clear.

The tired bit I cant really give any advice, but helping with the complexities of our childrens difficulties there is loads of ideas and perspectives here and you only have to ask, or look throw the search click this place has been amazing in supporting my son and its certainly a great forum.

A big warm welcome.

I have a teenage son (14 ASD) and beleive me autism and puberty do not mix well! It is complecated for them any way let alone having hormones causing problems.

My son drives me mad and shows lots of odd beahviours as well so I understand how hard it can be.

You are deffinately not alone, so keep posting so we can all support you. Take careX
