What's your child's obsession & anxiety fear?

Recommended Posts

At the moment, my 5y/o son's fears are fire and alarms. Oh, and lifts/elivators when out.

His obsession is his new 'Incredibales' lunch box I bought him for an upcoming school trip. He sleeps with it! Bless!

OK, can squeeling and screeching and making a he!! of a racket be classed as an obsession??? LMSO

J doesn't really have any fears, unless you count Dr Who. Current obsessions are Harry Potter (he IS HP) and a Walking With Dinosaurs-type series called The Future Is Wild, which he has on video and plays over and over again. I'm sure there are other minor ones but can't think of them at the moment.

Hi.

Ben has a fear of the toilet, getting clothes on and blood. If he falls over he will scream is there any blood mummy? If he can't see it ie on his face area I lie and say no of course not you are fine, if he can see it then we are in big trouble.

His obsessions, where shall I begin?

His longest one is cleaning, ever since he could hold a rag he has cleaned and the hoover is his best friend.

Next he likes PS2, Game cube, nintendo 64, Sega mega drive and computer games.

collecting stones.

watching TV best programme at the moment is Fairly odd parents, it was Sponge bob and before that it was Max and Ruby.

I could go on (and often do) but you would get bored

Viper.

Junior ( just turned 3 ) is obsessed with Max & Ruby - a cartoon about 2 bunnies - knows all the episodes off by heart ( as do I ! ) and her idea of a good time is reenacting the scenes with me as her sidekick. It could be a lot worse !!

her big fear of the moment is the clown on the mcDonald's ads - she is terrified of him.

Hi,

Fears

-------

My Dan now 10, has fear of sudden noises, he still runs like mad up the garden if a plane is coming over the house!

He used to be afraid at age 5 ish of lots of things, especially the toilet (Sometimes still soils!) and hated the bath as he was afraid of the plug hole! i think what caused it was that silly advert with David Bellamy and germs! Oh yes and still to this day he hates E.T, if we passed a poster in the street with it on he'd go mad, pleased they took the advert off tele B.T had it on a couple of yrs ago.

Obsessions

--------------

He was crazy on Thomas the tank for yrs, he had everything possible to do with Thomas, we'd take him to the Museam in York he'd get alll the way there smell the steam train, look for 5 mins then wanted to go home!

Now though....it's WWE Wrestling, from morning til night it's on his mind, i hate the ###### thing, i never let him have toy guns i hate violence but he's been hooked now on WWE for 5 years! He now has everything to do with WWE, he's going to Hull arena to see it live with his dad, he'll die of excitement!

Bye for now

D s first obsession was trains, we live near a railway station, and when he was younger, we could never walk past without stopping to watch the trains go by. H loved T THE tank engine until he was 6 and a half, and then he found Star wars. He knows every character down to what colour light saber they have, he loves Horrid Henry books Scooby Doo and lately its been Ace Lightening, a citv series. Every now and then, he gets his trains out, he hasnt let go of them yet, and I think its going to be a long term interest. He also loves constucting lego.

His biggest fear is meeting new adults, and he gets very panicky about homework, he hides in the toilet, I have been going into the school for 20 mins a week, to help him with it and its helped him feel less anxious about it.

Fears

Z hates hairdryers, handdryers, the noise the fans on the back of bouncy castles make (though he wants to know how it works, the hoover (unless he is the one doing the hoovering!). He hates dark places and crowds. The shower, strange bathrooms - especially if quite dark and small.

Obsessions

Thomas T Tank, Bob T Builder, trains, buses, diggers, helicopters and aeroplanes (tries to follow them if they go past, used to tell me he wanted 'lift up' I asked him why once 'so I can fly!'), fire engines, trains, trains and more trains although because of the noise thing if we actually go to a real train he gets very panicky if we go close up to the loco. Diesels, Engie Benjie, being outside (6.55am was the first request to go in the garden this morning!), coins (likes to line them up). Construction. Often sleeps with current favourite toy. It can't be comfortable sleeping if he actually ends up lying on thomas, toby or which ever bob toy he took to bed. Lights.

Nearly forgot clocks - 'tick tock bell towers'. Causes complete tantrum if we go somewhere new and he can see the clock tower and we walk away from it without him having chance to look. As he spots the things way before we do e.g. as we drive into a town, we often miss the target and have grumpy child all day.

Jonathan's main obsessions at the moment are the PS2 and this make-believe world where he is supreme ruler and chief inventor of amazing robots. He also has a thing about Fireman Sam for some reason. HIs other obsession is me. He is constantly climbing on me for cuddles, stroking my hair, telling me that he loves me, asking if I love him, trying to get into my shirt or jumper so that he can have skin to skin contact etc. I'm hoping that this will lessen over time as it can be quite embarrassing in the supermarket if he suddenly decides that he needs to be in my t-shirt!

He has had quite a few different fears over time...fireworks were a biggie for a long time, but last year he seemed to overcome it to a degree. Right now he goes into a total panic if we have to cut his toenails. I think this was triggered after he had a huge verruca on one of his toes and he now associates any activity on his feet with the pain of the verruca. I'm considering cutting his toenails when he's asleep in future.

My son, Oisn, lived with fear and obsessions all his life. In fact, he's also slightly OCD, no wonder ;)

the current ones:

FEARS

Fear of the dark (actually this has been with him since I can remember), so crippling that he cannot even go to the cinema to see a film. Fear of getting locked in public toilets (he actually once got locked insidet an airplain toiled, could not get out and the hostess had to unlock the door for him: this was the triggering event) to the point that he always leve the doors open (not a very social behaviour ;) .

Fear of death, since one of his beloved cats got killed by a car last months.

OBSESSION

Since we got the Incredibles DVD, HE IS Dash. No pretending, he simply is the character. Not always good, as he does not walk anymore, just runs everywhere.

Previous obsession: practically everything. From Harry potter to Spiderman, from Toy Story to Star Wars. He read the 11 books of A series of unfortunate events in barely one month, and the five books of Spiderwick in tho weeks. He is obsessed by "serial reading", in a way that he must finish a book once he starts it, no matter what, and if there is a sequel he must read that immediately.

Oh, well...

K's obsessions at the moment are his PS and gameboy, he also gets obsessed with the same dvd or video for weeks at a time and won't watch anything else, at the moment it's Home alone and he watches the same scenes over and over again. He has also got a major obsession about death and will constantly talk about graveyards and Heaven. Had the misfortune to go in the newsagents the other day when the papers all had pictures of the Pope lying in state. He saw it, at the top of his voice: "would you look at that!" "that man is really dead, I have never seen anything like THAT!" "why is he dead in the paper?"

We have also been living in a "rocket" for the past few months and have to call him captain at all times and there is a werewolf living in the shed.

His major fear at the moment is having his hair washed as he doesn't want to get water in his ears and he won't go anywhere near the shower, it terrifies him.

My son "S" age 8 is obsessed with the Short Circuit robot "No.5"! We have books and Lego models everywhere! He is also into collecting stones (I have to make sure I empty his school pockets before they hit the washing machine), playing playstation - although our 3 year old broke it last weeks and it's like he's had his hands cut off. Oh and at the moment it's digging in the dirt, collecting insects and making them houses, like spiders he may find in his bedroom! He really gets in a state about dying and crys hysterically at night because he does not want to get any older :crying: He also hates the sight of blood, he wanted to be a surgeon when he grew up until he found out it would involve blood :(

Between the ages of about 3 and 5 he used to shreek for no reason and not realise he's done it but I think he;s grown out of that one, he was obsessed with Thomas - but who isn't! He used to be terrified of the toilet, thought it talked to him. Oh and light switches - had to turn off all the lights at school before he left.

From about 4 to 7 he was THE real Harry Potter, the looks I used to get in the shops

Current obsession is James Bond - Every Friday night on ITV1!

My sons has just recently developed a new obsession - he wants to live to 132 years old!

When he asked why some people live longer than others we said that if you look after your body - dont smoke or drink and look after your body with healthy foods this could keep you healthy and live longer.

Still cant get him to eat fruit but he will try to eat anything that says healthy eating or healthy heart on it which is really cool as hes stopped saying he would like to go to heaven to visit granny (which was a big fear of ours as we didnt know how far he would take that wish of his as he kept asking how do you get dead!)

So we have a very health conscious young lad now!

Max is currently scared of the bath, since some water went through the overflow and made a gurgling noise, thats it, terrified. So having to shower at the moment. He frightened of sudden high pitch noises, or noise of vacumn cleaner, blender things like that. Scared of walking anywhere (thank goodness for new McClaren Major Stroller!).

Obsessed with Toy motorbikes, Simpson Hit & Run on the PC, and the fact that weve sold a car and its gone ! And as always Thomas & Co.

Hi,

My son was absolutely mad on Thomas when small also. (But then so was my other NT son) I read on a website recently, that a huge majority of ASD children are obsessed with it. They figure its due to the fact that the narrator always speaks slowly and clearly, and that there's not many background distractions. Also that the expressions on the engines faces are very clear and fixed for long enough to interpret them. Theory makes a lot of sense to me.

He's also done the usual dinosaur thing, but he's phasing that out now. And bugs was a huge obsession at one time.

At the moment (he's 11) he loves his XBox, Fifa Street is his new best game. His also made keen on Horrible History and Science which he currently subscribes to. And also chickens(!!) He brings them into every conversation at the moment. But this is (hopefully) one of his short lived things, he has from time to time.

As for fears, they do vary. Today he drove me bonkers, fearing I would drop some plates I was carrying in Matalan!!!

Hi all >:D<<'>

Thought I would give you all a glimmer of hope, as a mum of a nearly 16 year old!!

When he was little he had a range of ever changing obsessions (including T the TE etc), and some 'old favouirites' that were constant.

He has always loved Lego and computers, and then when he got to about 10 he was really into Warhammer.

Kathrynp...don't despair, my son was a great one for long, involved fantasy creations like you son :hypno::hypno: But he doesn't do it anymore! But an advance on this is the fact that he can create the most amazing 3D scenarios and terrains on the computer for online games!!:thumbs:

Now, as (almost) a young adult, his main obsession is with computers, for which he has a real flair. Since starting at his residential school for AS in November he has been storming through a GNVQ in ICT, and when he goes on to the associated specialist FE college for AS he hopes to do a BTEC at the local mainstream FE college through link provision. Ultimately he plans to work in ICT, and I am confident that he will find a niche, perhaps through supported employment or working from home.

Warhammer and Magic cards have reappeared since he went away to school, and have provided a good social connection with some of the other lads there.

He is also very into the Alien films, and has all the DVDs and knows all sorts of strange facts about the whole series of films!

All in all, I don't think that his 'interests' these days make him stand out (unless you get him started on the Alien films! ), so things are not all doom and gloom!!

Hang in there, things can get better!

Bid

Hi, Sorry.. haven't posted for a while, been busy! Hope your all well.

My DS's obsession right now is lego - he's 8 and builds the most amazing lego figures that any adult would be proud of, all from scratch and his own imagination :o which do constantly amaze me.

It's either lego, or 'Marble madness' - Today he wouldn't even get dressed, he's been in his room building the marble runs and sitting there putting the marbles constantly down the little shutes that he's built. Bliss! I have to say, he has been on such a hyper recently, its nice to have the break :) so haven't pushed him to get dressed (although I normally would - cop out huh lol).

Luke is scared of certain noises, particularly the vacuum cleaner or the lawn mower

At the moment he is really obsessed with his x-box. He will only ever play one game, for several weeks, then will move on to the next. His current one is Sonic Heros. When he is not playing on the X-box, he is talking about it none stop or running around pretending to be a character.

He has had some very strange obsessions. he went through a stage of refusing to go to bed unless he had 2 cars under his pillow - and it could not be just any 2 cars it had to be 2 particular cars. He will also have a particular video or DVD that he just watches over and over again, again until he is fed up with it and moves on to the next one.

my son whos nearly 5 is affaid of many things if he hears a lawnmower he will kick scream and cry same if he hears running water we cant run a bath or wash a dish if hes in the house he doesnt like crowds or people come to think of it. he hates alarms but loves the sirens on his dads police car come to think of it he loves playing with lawnmowers as long as its plastic he suffers with lots of anxietys he doesnt like people coming to the house he will hide his greatest anxiety is school he refuses to speak there because of it and as for obbssessions we have had water ,washing his hands, ground force, scoobydoo this one still is a big obbssession , ships swords and castles, cleandlineess everything has to be immaculate, his bottom ,and i could go on and on but it would bore you to tears so ill leave it there the fears i think are worse than the obbssessions as i as a mother am powerless against them but the obssessions a part from being annoying and somtimes a problem they can allso help such as if i need to cut his hair i can put a scoobydoo video on and do this they can be bad as he once was obbssessed with spiderman and thought he was him and tryed to climb walls untill one day we found him on the roof hed climbed from his window and was shouting look im spiderman no amount of reasoning made him see the danger hence i now have bars fitted to the upper windows extream but safe. all in all though he is lovley

Hi again.

I think my son must be the only AS child in the world who hates Thomas the tank engine. He can't tolerate it being on and gets upset because his dad loves it (his dad is a train driver)

His cleaning thing can be a right pain, sounds wonderful but when you want to settle down to watch your favourite soap and Ben decides he has to hoover under all the seats on the sofa so we all have to move, it kind of looses its shine. On the upside if I give him a water spray and a cloth he will spend hours cleaning my kitchen units. I do wonder what a social worker would think if they walked in while Ben was hoovering and I am sat there with a cup of tea watching him

The realy strange thing is he hates the sound of the hoover, I have to turn it on while he covers his ears, then he can use it :hypno:

You wouldn't believe it even if you were here, Ben has just asked if he can hoover his sisters room, (she has been sorting it out all day) you should see this tiny 4 year old pushing a Dyson around, then dismantle it to use the attachments

And the trauma when Captain Blacks gun got lost in the woods you can not imagine a full scale search was mounted. Then we moved on to star wars. Then superheroes and he wore a home made cape (out of a yellow skirt1) for a year! Major trauma at school when he was not allowed to wear it. Now we are are Yu-gi-oh, last birthday only the 3 egyptcian god cards would do - cost me 60!! if anyone understands the rules I would love to hear from them H has his own rules!

Obsessions: started with fans which lasted a few years, loved them even to getting us to cut pictures of them out of the Argos (pre diagnosis and we thought this was a nice hobby  ),

moved onto lampshades - he had a collection and had to go and visit lamp shade departments, used to sit in his buggy holding a lampshade bless him,

brief spell of house alarms,

Thomas has lasted over the years and he still takes him out at times and to bed. Spider in the Bath videos - cos it briefly showed a dishwasher and he liked us to rewind that bit and explain it

Probably more minor obsessions

Fears:

Is his food fresh - luckily that's receeded atm but used to ask every mouthful

Hand driers in public loos - again that's okish now

Being alone - won't go upstairs or downstairs by himself, even to the loo

The dark

Does not like people looking at his brother (18mth) which can cause problems

Does not like girls which causes even bigger problems!

The smoke alarm used to be a problem too

Hi,

My son's latest obsession is buses. Where do they stop what are their routes company names differences with buses etc he just loves them. When we are driving anywhere he will constentley talk about the buses he sees or bus stops and memorises their routes. His main fear at the moment are wasps and bees and any flying insect for that fact. He said the other day he's not going to go out during summer because of them!!

My youngest son's current fear is of Christopher Eccleston in Dr Who (no taste whatsoever, that boy! ). I know that children are meant to find Dr Who scary but didn't realise that this included all shots of the Dr casually walking down the street! :fight:

My eldest's fears seem to have disappeared for now (touchwood!). In the past these have included: haircuts, hoovers and escalators.

Both boys have an obsession with Spiderman, my husband's black woolly hat (my eldest even sleeps with it on his pillow  ) and Shrek.

Wasps, insects

deep water

sitting in a boat

sudden loud bangs

germs

obsessions

he used to have more when he was younger. Now I prefer to call them hobbies, rather than obsessions:

Computer (Ceasar 3, creating slide shows with Microsoft Power Point, Rune Scape)

Washing hands, not as a hobby though

being convinced to be allergic to fruits

my 7yr old!!!!! obsessions include thomas(still!!!!) dying, currently the popes funeral, which goes hand in hand with his fear of news on t.v we cannot have the news on when he is in the house or he will throw a huge tantrum, another obsession is collecting rubbish, any cartons or toy and sweet wrappers we have to keep, we have a box similar to a wash basket and we fill it then half empy it, choosing the pieces we feel happy enough to let go, this is a weekly task and one i dread!!!! he will talk about old things forever, we still talk about the old sofa ayear later!!!!!

Kyle is obssessed with switches, everything has to be on! Also doors and draws, opening and closing them constantly. He also likes to climb a lot, on top of the tv, bookshelves, tables etc which is nerve wracking to watch! He did have a favourite toy dog he had to sleep with, then he added a fluffy tiger as well, and the last couple of weeks also takes a cat and an elephant around with him as well. And they're not small toys!!

Fears, well he doesn't like the lawnmower but insists on running out to the garden when it's on, then runs in screaming! He's actually not to bad with fears, but he will hate something one day then not mind the next, so it's hard to tell how he will react.

Chris fears wasps, water(swimming), slides, a fear of leaving his dad.

Obcessions have ranged from hearing noises under his bed, a goes on about a trekking expedition which he truly thinks he is going to do, he is getting 8 horses for us all to go trekking on to barnsley, to his nans, we will camp out ect ect, leave the horses, go to nans, then trek homeagain, although i may have got some details wrong, but the amount of time he talks about it i should really know shouldnt i!!!

He is obcessed with asking if everything on TV is LIVE!!!!

Went though an obcession of saying the same thing at the same spot on the way to school, it was "do i have to go to school" LOL, but always at the same spot, exact same words.

Cant think of any more at the minute.

Sam's fears are swimming, the sea, the shower (although now that has turned into an obsession as once he's in, we can't get him out), the strimmer and the lawnmower. Actually, once he tries to use the things he is scared of, and succeeds, it becomes an obsession, so when we cut the grass now, he has to have a turn. He sometimes doesn't like the hand driers in some public loos.

His obsessions used to be the washing machine (abated), the hoover (again, not bothered now), but currently its books, Postman Pat, Disney, Pasta in Sauce  . Hats. A particular Playmobil man who is currently awol and I have been unable to find another. He's really into Peter Pan and wants the Captain Hook outfit for his birthday. Guess who's buying it tomorrow.

My Brian, age 11, used to love Thomas the Tank Engine at age 5, but his oddest obsession as a preschooler was streetlights. He knew exactly where the different types were, which ones were burned out, and could discuss the light-sensing timers that they used. Now he is very interested in rocks & minerals, Star Wars, and coins. He is afraid of motorcycles and trucks, anything that makes a loud noise. Interesting how similar the obsessions & fears are. Amazed at how similar these eccentricities are. I also find the fear turns into an obsession/interest.

I also forgot to mention shutting doors/gates and the big explanation when we are out that the person whose house it is probably left the gate open for a reason!

We are also currently learning to hoover. Hates the noise if I do it. Is mad for a go and fascinated with the attachments!

Lawnmower and strimmer hates the noise but also insists on going to watch then comes running to find me - same with power tools. What do they do etc? As long as they are turned off!

OK, we have a new obsession! It's just kinda snuck up on us and BANG there it is

Collecting the little bits of plastic off the coathangers in shops that go around the neck of the hanger with the size on it, you know the ones, they can go up and down and spin round and they come off too... did you know that?

We now have a little collection going stashed away in his bedroom, all sizes and shapes and numbers and colours.... and so on! To the point now that he crawls around on the floor of the shop looking for them. I've tried to explain that "technically speaking" it is stealing and you can't just take something because it's on the floor, but hey you know they've already got an answer for that, right? But it's on the floor mummy, it's rubbish!

AAHHHHHHH!

So now tonight I go tuck my NT 3 year old into bed to discover he has one of these things screwed up tight in his hand, a secret! NO NOT ANOTHER ONE!

Just thought I'd share that with you

Fear - Odd one -

Any screen thats not on. If a computer screen or tv isnt on and doing what it supposed to do it scare's him and he cant be in the same room as it in case it just comes on, on its own. He also cant watch the end of a video - Once the pictures finished it has to be switched off - the sound of the video scare him if its not acoompanied by picture.

But the - Obsession - Computers and Tvs :bounce:

He also - Cannot stand being on his own - If someones on the same floor as him thats fine but if im downstairs he wont stay up stairs. and freaks out if made to.
