Stimulant use linked to sudden death in children

Last Updated: 2009-06-18 14:44:09 -0400 (Reuters Health)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A new study suggests that children and adolescents who take stimulant medications for ADHD appear to be at increased risk for sudden unexpected death. Such events are rare, however.

"In recent years, concerns have arisen that stimulants may be associated with an increased risk of death. Results of the current study are consistent with these concerns," Dr. Madelyn S. Gould, from Columbia University Medical Center, New York, and colleagues write in The American Journal of Psychiatry.
