She's been given an urgent referral to the plastic surgeon hand man with a view to probable surgery, either at the site of the fracture or on her hand. He also confirmed that she does have scoliosis. He's going to see her in 6 months to decide what to do about that, as he feels she has enough to cope with at the moment. Meg is very upset. bid Report post Posted August 5, 2009 Well, had the appointment yesterday and more pluses than minuses I think. Still nothing with her hand, so next step nerve conductivity tests in the next 5 to 6 weeks. Also, the little movements she has in her fingers which I thought was a good sign, are actually the intrinsic muscles which are compensating, if that makes sense Then the hand specialist will review in 8 to 9 weeks. If there is still nothing, he will think carefully about surgery. This would be extremely complex involving tendon transplants (several operations I think), big scars but a very good prognosis. She wouldn't get 100% functioning back, but still very good and her fine motor skills with her fingers would be unaffected. On the big plus side, the specialist is hopeful that because she's so young, there is still a chance the nerve will regenerate. This will be transplanting two tendons and a section of muscle...I think that's right, and in more than one operation. The nerve conductivity tests were very distressing for poor Meg. They gave her a headache and made her feel sick, and then she had tests on the muscles which involved inserting a needle with a microphone on the end which really hurt. It's a weird situation, because we know she is very lucky not to have been killed, or paralysed, and I've since been told she could have even lost her arm as it rotated when it was broken. But even so I still feel so upset, then bad that I feel so upset when we have been so lucky, if that makes any sense! bid Report post Posted October 18, 2009 Just a quick update: Tendon transfer surgery is still planned, but Meg has been referred to the peripheral nerve damage unit at the UK leading specialist orthopaedic hospital for a second opinion/more sophisticated diagnostic investigations.
