Liquid paracetemol

Recommended Posts

I wondered if I can get a liquid paracetemol from over the counter? Sam is nearly seven and I still give him calpol for pain etc but it says up to 6 years,so he may start needing something a little stronger.Tried him on half a tablet but he cant swallow,I think he may always have this problem(I was the same until age 15!)

So hope to get it in a liquid but dont really want to hassle the GPs over it.I wont give my kids aspirin as we have clotting problems in my family,so needs to be paracetemol.

Thanks in advance!

I think you can get Calpol 6+ (it's a different colour and I don't think it tastes so nice ).

Otherwise you can get soluable tablets - ask the pharmacist.

The guidelines have been revised on Aspirin and it shouldn't be given to children at all.

Our son is 11.5 yrs and will only take "baby" calpol. (the one for up to 6 yrs )

I just increased the dose to match his age and weight, so he now has 20ml of baby calpol (4 teaspoons) which is 480mg. One paracetamol tablet is 500mg and the recommended dosage for 6 - 12 yrs is half to one tablet.

It is a very expensive way of doing things, but it works and to be honest he doesn't need it very often

Thank you so much mumble and caci.Caci I think I will do it that way to,with the calpol. As I still have two little ones who take it anyway it woulnt be too much of an additional expense. My four year old hates anything other than calpol, once they run out at my local shop and all pharamcies were closed so I brought another brand he ended up burning up because he refused to take it.Luckily Sam is not to fussy just cant physically swallow the tablets.

Thanks again very useful info!!!!

My DP will use calpol 6+ as he cannot swallow tablets without crushing them first, his GP always prescribes a liquid form of whatever his meds are if there is one available which with around 90% of drugs there is!

You can get calpol and 6+ in little 5ml sachets too. Mine prefer it this way as they tend to heave on a spoonful and this allows them to suck it out of the packet. [horrid I know]. but at least the youngest will have it. Middle one would rather burn up when younger but not so bad now we use the sachets. Its useful for hols too. I hate to say this but I give Dd3 a sachet every now and then even if she is ok. just to keep her used to taking it, so its not a panic when she needs it. It took years to get her to take it. The things you do LOL. B)

I just wanted to say that my two couldn't take tablets til I tried a suggestion made by a friend to give them lemonade and a straw.

It seems to wash it down abit better than plain water.

I found a liquid paracetemol called "Medinol" over the counter at Boots, which is for 6+ up to adults, and seems to work well. My son liked the taste, which helped.

I have the opposite problem. Ross is sensitive to Benzoate so I always give him tablets if at all possible. I cut the tablet up and he is very good at taking them now.

It's worth perceiving with the tablets if you can.
