How do I bring the link I want from the web to my posts?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am sorry for this daft question but I am not a very technical person and always wanted to know how it is done. I've tried once to bring one of the web links to one of my posts before but haven't succeded.

How do you do it?

Any advice appreciated.

Hi Dana -

when you're typing your post you can see a green arrow with a + sign in the toolbar above - that's the 'insert link' tool.

If you click on it it will open a new window (you might, depending on your browser and settings, get a little 'flag' asking you if you want to temporarily allow scripted windows - say 'yes').

Copy the webpage address you want to link to from the top of your browser (i.e. for here it would be 'http://www.asd-forum.org.uk/forum/[whatever]

Paste the web address in the new dialogue box you've opened using the insert link tool, and then click 'okay'. The next box will open. and you can insert a name for your link (I use 'linkyplinkything' quite a lot!) or just paste the webpage address again. click 'okay'.

That's it. If you preview your post you'll see the 'link' underlined, and when anyone clicks on it it will open the page in a new window.

Oh PS: quick reminder - you can't post links to commercial sites or sites offering services for sale etc.

If you've still got the 'edit' option just reopen your post and delete the link by highlighting it and try again...

Jessica Kingsley is a commercial site, though, so you can't post a link to it. You can, of course, 'namecheck' a particular book if you've found it useful.

Hope that helps, if not give the mods a shout and they'll detlete for you.

Thanks Baddad. I've managed to do it. :)

But how do I bring the link from the web when I send the e-mail to my friends? There is no 'insert link'+sign on 'compose e-mail'.

Do you mean email off-forum (i.e. not a PM?). If so you just copy the webpage address in the same way then paste it directly into your e-mail... it'll make the 'link' automatically, and usually the text changes colour to indicate it's a link.

easy as peasy!

Thanks BD.

I have tried this but nothing happened. I pasted the www.jkp.com address and it appeared in my e-mail under the name Nova Roma but couldn't get a link. I tried sending it to myself first to see if it works. What have I done wrong?

No idea! sorry!

It may be something to do with your e-mail settings and/or 'host', but generally it always works the same way...

if you right click on the 'header' at the top of your browser and then 'copy' it should copy the whole code for the specific page.

In the body of your email you just paste

It won't necessarily change colour in the email before you send it, but when it arrives at its destination (or if you look in your 'sent' folder if you save a copy automatically) it'll be in purple or something and underlined...

the only thing I can think of that would stop it from working (other than e-mail settings/host) is if you forgot to leave a gap after pasting...

it should look like this:

Here is the link:

http://www.dixons.co.uk/gbuk/index.html

to a random website...

but in an e-mail it will be coloured - usually purple.

Other than that, i dunno what to suggest!

I've done it finally! :dance It is really easy peasy (not a rocket science as I thought).

I think my possible mistakes were indeed either I didn't leave the gap or I clicked 'paste' and 'paste' again instead of 'copy' and 'paste'.

Thank you Baddad. :)

no worries - glad you got there....

I've been to my nephew's 21st tonight and it's taken me about 500 attempts to type this :oops:

Easy to make a typo... but it can make a huge difference to the end result!
