The toast sandwich: Britain's cheapest meal

Recommended Posts

Exactly what it says, a slice of toeast between two slices of bread. According to Mrs Beeton it's the cheapest most filling and nutritious lunch you can have.

Tempted? Can't say I am. I used to eat apple sandwiches as a child though, which some people might consider a bit weird!

A toasted toast sandwich might be nice - a slice of toast between two slices of toast... Or what about a toasted bread sandwich: two slices of hot buttered toast with a slice of bread in the middle?

A huge resounding "NO" from me  I used to be given crisp sandwiches sometimes - can't say I like them either - never had apple ones  did used to have apple and cheese though (only done with a granny smith apple  why this makes a difference I do not know but it did)

Reminds me of a poem by Kit Wright, If You're No Good At Cooking:

If you're no good at cooking,

Can't fry or bake,

Here's something you

Can always make. Take

Three very ordinary

Slices of bread.

Stack the second

On the first one's head.

Stack the third

On top of that.

There! Your three slices

Lying pat.

So what have you got?

A BREAD SANDWICH.

That's what!

Why not?

I like the poem but not the bread sandwich :)

Cheap? Maybe. But nutritious? Hardly. As a cookery writer, Mrs Beeton has always been hugely over-rated. According to her biographer, Katherine Hughes, the original book, Beeton's Book of Household Management, was written more to make money than to teach people how to cook.

The toast sandwich recipe is in the chapter titled "Invalid Cookery". As my mum said, poor invalids - what have they done to deserve this?!
