How to remove a hard drive

Recommended Posts

I've got an old desk top computer and want to sell it for parts. But it has the hard drive intact.

I want to remove it before I sell it on.

Does anyone know how I should do it? Instructions and diagramme would help.

The Desk top is a Dell Dimension, if that helps at all.

They are easy to remove. Once you have got the case open you can usually unclip the Dell hard drives by pressing some green tabs.

There will only be two connections to the rest of the system which you can unplug and pull the disk out

There should be something on line showing you exactly how to remove

Once the hard drive is removed it is important to open the case and physically destroy the disk. I'm assuming you want to remove the HD for security reasons. Also before you start, if you can, power up and delete everything you can.

Thanks for the info.

This is an old computer, that was infected by a virus and although I took it to two computer people, they both did not manage to remove the virus completely, so I gave up and bought a new computer.

Now I just want to sell it for parts on ebay or similar. But don't want any of my personal info to be on the computer.

I understand the bit about removing the harddrive part. But I don't really know what a harddrive is, or what it contains. So I am presuming it contains some kind of disc, and that is the disc that I have to destroy that contains all my personal information???

Yes thats right Sally. Just take a hammer to it on a day you are feeling a bit frustrated and get one last use out of it!

The hard drive is a metal box with two sets of wires attached (As in the vid clip). They are easy to remove. On our desktop you don't need any tools, it takes all of 2 seconds to remove. As I said, open it up (You need a screwdriver for that bit) and there will be a disk, that's the bit the needs destroying.
