Autism in Maturity.

Recommended Posts

Chris thanks for the link and drawing our attention to this. I feel there is a lot of work which needs to be done in this area. ASD conditions are I feel seen very much seen as a young persons condition and a lot of the perceptions surrounding it are from this perspective. As we get older our lives develop to different levels very often and as such we face different but as equally as challenging issues in our lives.

I find it interesting that it has taken a timeframe where people diagnosed in childhood have had to reach adult ages before some large organisations have felt the need to start to put this on the agenda. This is a good thing because i suspect there are a lot of adults who have been diagnosed as adults who like me possibly feel ignored and irrelevant in the bigger picture. Personally i think this is a mistake as it is a position which has failed to recognise years of experience of living with the condition. I for one would love to speak to people in their 80's and 90's with the condition as I know and respect they have double the life experience as me and would love to know how they felt they have developed as individuals whilst dealing with what it means to have AS for example in the second half of their lives. From a selsfish perspective I hope this sort of information brings individuals like this forwards as I know I would greatly benefit from their experience and advice. Can only be a good thing in the long run, after all these are life long conditions and should be recognised as such.

Just a few personal thoughts.

LL I agree with you 100%. I couldn't have put it better.

As someone who wasn't diagnosed with AS until after retirement I would be happy to help in any research if asked - and to discuss how I have coped with the undiagnised condition and how it has affected my life to date.

Now I know this is a bit (Lot) off topic, but I'm sure the more (Very) mature one amongst us may have the same problem. As I'm getting older my arms are getting shorter. I first realised this when I was no longer able to hold the news paper far enough away to read it, Now I find I am having more and more difficulty reaching down to doing my shoe laces up.

I'm always put off from getting involved cuz they say they are working on things but don't always make it seem like they want just anyone to contact them - stupid reaction from me - possibly - but it's how the NAS comes across to me...

I do think it would be good if they had more input and stuff for adults though.
