Self employment and help with tax forms?

Recommended Posts

I am self employed, which means I have to do a self-assessment for my taxes every year.

It always became too stressful. Self employment is easier because I work at home and without colleagues.

However, I don't do the tax forms very well. I do understand them, but I can't seem to fill them in and get all the correct paperwork sorted. This year I messed up so badly that I ended up paying 230 pounds to the HRMC while I earned only £1657.

I know that I did not need to pay anything, but it just went wrong.

I read on the HRMC site that people with disabilities or mental health problems can get help with filling in forms. Would that also be the case if you are diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome? (I am not; I am only on a waiting list for an assessment)

Asperger's was not mentioned on the HRMC site, but if you can get help, what would this help consist of? And what would one have to do to get this help?

Can you afford to take on an employee to do all the tax returns?

if you could give me a link to the 'people with disabilities or mental health problems' then i might have a better idea

of where autism/aspergers would come under.

Thank you for replying, Kilimanjaro.

It's not easy to find. I only stumbled onto it by accident when I was trying to get my forms done online.

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/contactus/particular-needs.htm#6

under the heading: If you need help completing forms and a Self Assessment tax return

But nothing is mentioned especially.

Apparently you cannot email HRMC.

I'd have to call to ask more, but I wouldn't know what to say.

Also, the last two times I called them weren't very good.

I could pay someone to do it -that would be a but that would probably be more expensive than just paying those taxes!

I only earned £1657 last year.
