Nappies on prescription?

Recommended Posts

Hi - this is the first time Ive posted on here so bear with me!

My first born son is 6 years old, and Ive recently been told that it may be possible to get his nappies on prescription? Or get some sort of grant for them? He refuses to use the toilet to poo, and needs 2 or 3 at night too. So up to 4 a day. Adds up to a lot of money when he's in the biggest size possible! He gets DLA already, as he was diagnosed last year with asd and adhd. So obviously that pays for them at the moment.

Was just wondering if anyone has any ideas on this?

Also, how do I get nappies bigger than whats available in the supermarkets?!

Thanks in advance :)

My 7 year old son is the same with toileting. To get nappies can ask for an appointment with the school nurse. You have an entitlement of up to 4 a day for a child who still needs nappies after the age of three, and you will be sent samples to try. When you've found one you like they send a large bulk consignment of them. Don't be fobbed off, 4 a day is your entitlement.

Unfortunately our son didn't like any of the samples so we buy Huggies or Pampers (depending on what's on offer) night-time pyjama pants because they go up to age 14. The Huggies ones are the roomiest, but if the Pampers ones are cheaper, we'll go with them because these types of nappies are very expensive, unfortunatley.

My daughter is under the consultant gastro for faecal incontinence. I spent over a year arguing with the bladder and bowel service that we should get her nappies on prescription. I have,in writing, absolute confirmation that nappies are only available if there is a developmental reason for their use. Apparently a medical/physical one does not meet NICE criteria and "additional equipment such as nappies and/or specialist cleaning is what DLA is expected to be used for".

Asd is a developmental condition, so make sure you get his toileting issues dx'd as part of his asd,and not as anything else!

Daughter will be 8 next week. Still in nappies, still costing me a fortune. DLA doesn't even start to cover it!!!!

We are having problems finding big enough pull ups for my son, size 6 is now to small. So I spoke to his school nurse yesterday and she is going to assess him and see if he meets criteria for free nappies. Waiting to hear, i hope he does because we dont get any DLA so its very expensive!
