Should we become more political?

Recommended Posts

Rarely do I get through a day without somebody telling me "I don't do politics". This is a concept that I find difficult to comprehend because it effectively opens the door to allow hostile forces to walk all over that person. I am a strong believer in fighting for one's right using whatever means are necessary. This view was probably shaped during my time at residential school where kids had to fight for the right to breathe. Do you think that the time has now come for British society to kick the habit and start to become more political?

Isn't it probably more a case of some people not wanting to talk about politics in a situation whereby they may be criticised for their opinions, or worse yet, the possibility of arguments and conflict arising?

I know people who have very strong opinions on what is right or wrong with politics today but they may not necessarily discuss these opinions with everyone they interact with. I think, with politics, you've got to pick your discussions carefully.

I guess it goes with that old saying of, 'never discuss politics and religion'. People seem to have stuck to that, unless they're up for the possibility of conflict arising. Saying that, if people don't readily discuss their opinions things are less likely to change as people are not united in their distaste or agreement with what is happening at any particular time.

I don't know... I've learnt the hard way that it's not a good idea to talk about either politics, nor religion, as you are ultimately going to upset someone.

It is the prevailing etiquette but if people didn't break etiquette then we would all be living like the Victorians. I find it hard to believe a country can be considered democratic if society places a gag order on political discussion.

Yes !

As it is I am and as I am not scared to challenge authority through the belief that authority has to be challenged in order for it not to rule our lives as authority is meant to help, not rule us.

I also keep abreast of current political affairs as it pertains to this country and abroad and can make my own decisions and always do so, so I can continue to challenge authority, any authority wherever it presents itself for authority has to be limited or else it becomes oppressive.

And as to people that say they don't engage in politics, do they at all realise what politics actually is, for politics is about people, it's about us, we engage in it every day of our lives when it is we socialise with others.

From that font of eternal knowledge Wikipedia ;

Politics is the art or science of influencing people's beliefs on a civic, or individual level, when there are more than 2 people involved.

Modern political discourse focuses on democracy and the relationship between people and politics

And so if we seek change to our individual circumstances we have to fight for it by engaging in politics, because nothing will change if we don't.

Politics enters every single part of our life, and it genuinely shocks me when people don't know or want to know about what's going on!

I think it is very important that we know about the current state of affairs in our local area, country and the world in general. People always talk about a wish that the world was better, or things are unfair. How do they think things happen? Leave someone else to do it?

So get out there and talk about politics! Debate and enjoy it!

We can be political without getting personal. I am learning how to do this in my public health masters degree at university.
