Help anyone.

Recommended Posts

I'm having to type this and all my messages in "word" then cut and past them to the forum. The reason being, my BT broadband has gone odd. When we type a message it takes ages for it to apear on the screen. When I say ages I usually go away and make a cup of tea come back and still have to wait for it to appear. The longer the mesage the longer the wait. While waiting we have no control over the computer ie can't minimise the window, nothing until the mesage appears.

I can type normally on all other aspects of the computer and am having to use internet explorer for most things. MSN works fine though.

Any ideas whats wrong all you Techies?

Hi Phas, we use Norton anti virus. You are probably on the button with wearing it out with posting here too much  . Thanks for the 1000 post reminder, I didn't notice.

Yer, you could say that Phas, I've got worms! :o And all sorts of other stuff too. The problem I have now is what do I do with them, some refer to Microsoft windows stuff, if I hit the delete button will it harm anything important? Should I wait for hubby to get home, even though he is only marginally better at this stuff than me?

I'd set a restore point and then hit delete one worm at time, follow the instructions. If it doesn't ask to re-boot surf about for a few minutes and if all is well repeat the process....or wait for hubby and let him do it!

its not a virus it is not a prob with you computor

it is a prob with your broadband provider (im with ntl so if i had this prob it would by slow conection to my computor from ntl svr)

who is your isp

if you know who your isp is you can give them a call and ask them to put you through to the server status line that will tell you what the prob is

I'd be inclined to agree with microsoft_admin about this actually. Unfortunately, if he's right, there's not much you can do to resolve the problem, except to be patient! :wallbash:

(But clearing out spyware and viruses is always a good move anyway. ;))

I think Spybot sets restore points automatically actually.

Some malware can drain the end user's internet connection bandwith, for example, if the computer it has hijacked,is being used as proxy to relay spam.

As a scan has shown up malware problems, they have probably added keys to the registry as well, which will need removing.

For future reference from a biased user, this is the most effective windows antivirus available: Windows AV

Tux would that explain why our computer sometimes says something about a ghost window being left open?

Had to look this up as I've not heard the term before [thought it would have been referring to a hidden keylogger],but a ghost window is a window that is translucent, remains as the ontop window, and can be clicked through to another window, until the ghost window is made the active one...if that makes sense.

Is there no translucent window there when several are opened?

Here's an animated example of it:

Seems that someone has downloaded a ghost window program [not to be confused with Norton's Ghost program,if that is installed] onto the computer.

I don't think thats it. We don't know it's there until we try to open a game or something and a message pops up saying you have to close the ghost window running this application before opening a new one. Also at night when we close down we always have to close many programmes before it will shut down. It says application not responding, end now. One of these is usually a ghost programme.

Does that make any sense cos it sure as hell don't to me.

I think it does make sense, the most obvious thing to think of is that it is running in the background, and could be stopped from booting automatically if it's a legimate program.

Go to start>run>type: MSCONFIG

OK it.

Click on startup-have a look for anything with ghost in the name-if it's there, untick it and apply it,should then prompt to restart if I remember correctly [to activate changes],ghost is a non traditional name, and is not a part of any neccessary applications/programs,so will be okay to untick.

Another to try,go to search, which I think is in my computer..settings? something or other..am in linux at the moment so can't check for it's exact location.

Search in the programs and files section-for ghost or GHOST.

With regards to the malware problem, scan the computer again with this online program:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

It's one of the programs used at the computer repair place I do work experience at,one program doesn't neccessarily scan for everything,so it's better to use several to get the best detection chance.

Is there a firewall being run on the computer?

ok wireless means no wires it is a way of conecting to the internet with out plugging your computer in to the internet

(i am assuming that you have a cable modem since you mentiond broadband)

the cable modem would be plugged in to a wireless router (a device that sends out radio waves that conect wirelsess compattible devises to to each other) your computer / laptop would have a wirless card in it to receve the wireless signal from the router

a wireless router can progect a wirless internet radio enabled field up to 70 meters away so if the field is not secured with a security protocall your negbors (or any one in range of the wireless router signal) could be using your wirelsss feild to tap in to your internet conection

I'd go along with what MotherEve has already suggested ...

The message you're seeing would only appear under those circumstances. So if you're seeing it with only one user account, then yeah - there is something weird going on.
