redberry Report post Posted April 3, 2006 I bought this comp from P* W**** just before chrimble and as I am totally useless when it comes to what I need, want and the whole techie thing I relyed on the salesperson to point me in the right direction. I knew I needed microsoft word cos that was on my very old comp and I use it all the time for vital college work and stuff. Any way while being sold this comp I asked if it had microsoft word on it and he said Yes it has. Well I have shed loads of stuff in my documents, very important college stuff and most vitally nearly a whole DLA forms worth of answers for my sons claim. Well.....on March 31st i got a screen saying that my trial 2003 Microsoft office 8 has expired and I need to convert to full product. For a lot of money! Gulp we are So broke at the moment and all my documents are locked, can't do anything but read em. I got a microsoft works 7 disc from my friend who doesnt use it and I have successfully put it on my comp..but my documents are still locked. HELP Does microsoft works rely on office? How come I didnt know I only had a trial product? What can I do? Im really upset about this. Im still recovering from my Sons dx and I have been really down. I feel like anything that goes wrong pushes me nearer to the not being able to cope chasm. I dont even know if I have asked the right questions. If any one has any ideas Please help. Thank you redberry
phasmid Report post Posted April 3, 2006 I would phone them, or if close enough call in, and raise merry hell with them over it. Explain that you were never told it would be a trial version of the product and that you told them at the time you would need it. A promise to mention it to trading standards might not go amiss. UltraMum Report post Posted April 3, 2006 In the meantime you could download and use the Open office software - it's free and will open any word, excel, powerpoint etc that you have on your computer - you can also save the documents as .doc.ppt.xls so that other users of Microsoft can read your documents. You can get it at http://download.openoffice.org/2.0.2/index.html
redberry Report post Posted April 3, 2006 Thanks for your replies. I have bitter memories of raising merry hell at this store I was there for hours trying to get something sorted and usually I am really stubborn and use the broken record technique until I get a result. I know that I should. I honestly do not have the energy, I have phoned them (an hour waiting and talking to someone who clearly was not 'bovered' and they said that all of the same make comps have a trial product and this is made clear. Jeez I am beginning to wonder if its not my own scatterbrain and that I was told. I am going to attempt your suggestions Many thanks redberry

baddad Report post Posted April 3, 2006 Hi redberry - Office is a 'damn fine' processor - I've not bothered putting word back on to my new PC (but probably will at some point just 'cos it integrates better with some other microsoft progs I run)... Just wanted to add, though, that if you are REALLY keen on word it can also be bought bundled into the WORKS SUITE ... (as opposed to the bog standard 'works' which has it's own wp prog that's not quite as adaptable)... It's still going to cost you, but is a hell of a lot cheaper than the OFFICE package... Stick with open office for a couple of months, and you'll probably find you are happy to live without word completely... NB: Anyone know where you can download a UK english thesaurus for 'write'? I only have a US english one, and you can't switch the thesaurus/spellchecker independently L:&P BD

UltraMum Report post Posted April 3, 2006 cheaper than the OFFICE package... The other option - if you've a child at school is to get the student version of Office - still set you back +/- ?100 though
