You need to know what sort of PC she has and what sort of slot the card goes into. PM me with as much as you know about it and I'll try and advise.

If your mum doesn't play games much then your looking at between ?5 and ?10 from ebay for a PCI or AGP card, maybe ?25-30 if it's a new PC with a PCI Express slot.

Before you take such a drastic step, follow the big thick lead from the monitor to where i plugs into the PC. (If it doesn't plug into the PC that is your probem!) Make sure the lead is tightly inserted and do up the little thumbscrews on it. Also try your Mum's PC with a different monitor, or take the monitor to a friends house and try it on their PC to see of that is the problem. You're looking at ?20 for a second-hand monitor if that is the problem.

If that doesn't work, you'll need to take the back off the PC (Turn off and unplug first!) , unscrew the little screw next to where the graphics card (The bit the monitor plugs into) is sited, gently lift out the graphics card and then put it in again making sure it's fully pushed into the slot, screw everything together again then try again.

If the monitor doesn't plug into a card, then your PC has on-board graphics, which is another set of issues!

My money is on the monitor or a connection being dodgy, total failure of a graphics card to the point where nothing at all appears is rare.

Good luck, and give me a shout if you get stuck!

I don't know much about the ins and outs of these - but I do know that I purchased a graphics card (Radeon? or something) - for my daughters PC because her computer screen froze everytime she played certain pc games (The Sims I think) - someone at work told me that I needed to buy one and told me what to get - I put it into the machine as per the instructions (and it was pretty simple to do - I put in some extra memory at the same time and that worked fine) - but I had terrible trouble with the monitor and the computer didn't seem to work properly afterwards (so I took it back out and it's sitting in the draw). Haven't got a clue why or what - although someone told me that they can be faulty sometimes? - if I remember it cost about ?30-?40.

Hi hev

Before you invest in a new graphics card consider other reasons for the display not working. For instance the motherboard, processor or memory might be the cause of the problem.

I strongly suggest going to a friendly local PC shop and getting them to test it. They can diagnose the fault quickly using spare parts before investing in new hardware until you are sure what the problem is.

Good luck
