Hi,

As you know my son has ASD & ADHD a few months ago there was a lot of talk about the benefits many children are getting from taking these oils. My son still has to take other meds just to help him get through the day, but I have to say I have noticed a lot of positive changes since he has been taking the fish oils plus evening primrose oil, his confidence seems to be improving. I really believe the Evening Primrose and Fish Oils are doing something. Somethings changed and I am know this is the only thing I have changed.

Just wondering if anyone else has found them beneficial. Here are some websites about it.

From the "it can't hurt to try" category.

Keep in mind I am in the US and from what I have read, homeopathy is more common everywhere else so I thought I'd ask my UK friends here for their advice and experiences.

I just recently met a homeopathist and read a book she recommended, and now I'm curious about it helping my ds with some of his issues. She is not taking any new clients and there aren't many practitioners here, so I went to the web where I found a symptom checklist which steered me towards a remedy (if it matters they suggested nux vomica for "fastidiousness--I'm thinking of his bleeding hands from overwashing them!--and aversion to answering in conversation.")

But the advice on doseage was very vague considering the circumstances, so I'd like to hear what is the best way to start, and for how long?

I am looking at complementary therapy to help Js ADHD and Anxiety and came across this product, they do other products for adults too but this one is for children, and wonder if anyone here has heard of it, and has anyone tried it? if so what was your opinion, it has a host of ingrediants that help dopamine so I think I am going to give it a trial with J going back to school soon.

Hi,

My son has been on Melatonin now for 5 days and it's been fantastic. He's so much happier now he's getting a good sleep at night, and having time to myself in the evenings has been bliss!

Does anyone give their kids a "break" from Melatonin ie at weekends or holidays? Does it have any negative affects, for example they can't sleep at all without it?

I don't like the thought of giving to him every night, so was wondering what other people's experiences are with this.

Hi all,

just a quck question, has anyone heard or even tryed the herbal tablets called "eye q " its a herbal tablet with a marine fish oil and virgin evening primrose oils and is ment to be helpful with children with low consintraton and other problems, my mum has heard loads about it and even knows a few people who have used it on there children ( none with aspergers) and thought it might be a good idea to try it on Daniel.

It is quiet expensive 7.99 for 60 thats ten days worth (as they have to take 6 a day for the first month)...... and as a single parent with a ex husband who is not very supportive in things like this i was just wondering if they where worth it

any thought would be great

Hello folks,

Now, whilst I'm no means qualified to offer professional advice re supplementation, he's my lay(wo)man's 2p's worth.

In my view there are several essential vitamins and minerals we need to supplement (if I mention dosages, they're adult dosages - I don't have kids)

Omega 3 (and Omega 3 ONLY - DO NOT buy a combined 3, 6 and 9 formulation as we get plenty of 6 and 9 from our food). Make sure you choose a high-potency formulation; I take NOW Foods DHA-500 in combination with their Super EPA Double Strength. I buy all my vitamins and minerals from iHerb; they're a US company but everything is so CHEAP (even when you take shipping and customs charges into account).

Magnesium: - This plays a role in energy production, metabolism, nerve impulse transmission and bone health. It's also been shown to relax and can aid in treating and preventing depression (this is why you'll find it in many natural relaxation and sleep formulae). Be sure to buy magnesium CITRATE (NOT oxide or malate) as the citrate form is the most readily bio-available.

Calcium: - Never take magnesium without calcium, as they (DAMN!! Can't find the word I need - begins with 's'! HELP!!) complement (NOT the word I wanted). Make sure you go for the citrate version as, again, this is the kind most readily available to the body.

Vitamin D: - I CANNOT stress the importance of supplementing this - especially for those on the spectrum. There are varying factors concerning dosage but, as a general rule, 5,000IU per 25lb bodyweight (or part thereof) daily is recommended, especially if you've not taken it before. It plays a role in bone health, boosting the immune system (if you take a reasonable amount of vitamin D in the winter, you're less likely to get the seasonal sniffles!)

Finally, I'd like to promote L-theanine; this amino acid plays a key role (along with taurine - this is the reason Red Bull is called Red BULL, bit of a pun, as taurine has nothing to do with bulls. It's added to energy drinks containing caffeine to lessen the jitters) in activating the beta receptors responsible for relaxation.

As it's an AA, it has no side effects, therefore may be useful in calming down kids about to 'go off on one' (you could call them magic happy caps or something). THE STUFF WORKS!! I take a couple 20 minutes before I have to do something stressful (e.g. hospital appt) and I breeze through.

Right I've been awake all night and I think I need to attempt to get some kip now.

Hope some of what I've said's been helpful.

Hugs all

My main problem has been my scattered, random occuring thoughts i couldn't get out of my head but using this i feel alot calmer and as it says more focused. Don't know if it's just placebo but i think it's slowly working for me. I've also in the last few days really started trying to find a new job (and applied for 3 in the last few days which i haven't done for a while) Also i've totally stopped video games on my games console as i used to be obsessed with games and now can't stand the sight of them. I'm a writer and i'm now focused back on this right now. I also run every day 1-2 miles and meditate and do a humming breathing technique before bed aswell as using a magnesium spray daily.. I give him eyeQ fish oil everyday which he's been taking for over a year now and works well with his concentration but he gets very wild/hyper at home and won't calm down/finds it hard to calm down, which is normally on a night! anyway went to holland and barrett and they couldn't recommend anything other than the fish oils which he is already on and rescue remedy but that contained alcohol so I decided best not. any ideas on what I can give him to help calm him on an evening? he is 7 1/2.... thanks (he can get violent too!)

Has anyone here used the supplement SYNAPTOL, to help with ADHD? As most of these supplements touted as 'almost' cures they are priced at a level where you are frightened to buy them if they don't work but they are worth every penny if they do.

Does anyone know of any UK alrternatives to Synaptol?

He has always been violent but is now getting so big and strong that I worry about the saftey of my other son - 4 years old. His doctor has said that she doesn't want to put him on any meds because of his age and although I am in agreement I also feel that I need to try anything as I'm at my wits end!! Any advice on non medication things that will help with the violence.

Magnesium and Preventive Medicine - Part One

International Medical Veritas Association

Typically, if you are a mainstream allopathic physician, preventive

medicine is limited to elective stress testing, mammography, screening for

prostate-specific antigen, periodic lipid profiling and giving some kind of

lip service to life-style changes and diet. This kind of medicine offers

only a shadow of what preventive medicine needs to be. According to the New

York Times, "New evidence keeps emerging that the medical profession has

sold its soul in exchange for what can only be described as bribes from the

manufacturers of drugs and medical devices." A soulless medicine's first

crime is its failure to seriously embrace preventive medicine and avoid

disease in the first place. None of the pharmaceutical companies are

interested in preventive medicine for they make all their money off the sick

and dying.

Preventive medicine is as important as any other type of medicine. In

ancient China the oriental medical doctors were paid for keeping people well

thus patients stopped paying when they fell sick. Allopathic medicine,

through its major misunderstanding, denial and neglect of preventive

medicine, is directly contributing to modern man becoming the most diseased

population in the history of the world. Doctors and health officials really

have no idea that the vast majority of diseases can be prevented and even

cured without drugs or surgery. Their idea of preventive medicine starts and

ends with vaccines, which contain toxic chemicals like mercury that may be

contributing greatly to the swift rise in chronic diseases.

Allopathic medicine could do much to redeem its soul if it would face

all the evidence that has been building up all of which suggests that we

have to add adequate intake of magnesium-the "forgotten electrolyte"-to our

list of preventive health measures. Ensuring adequate magnesium intake,

through a combination of dietary sources, oral supplementation, and

importantly the use of transdermal methods of application, constitutes a

crucial step toward health that is justified by scientific and clinical data

We need no further information to conclude that the American public

consumes less magnesium than necessary for good health and that magnesium

supplementation is indicated for almost everyone. Magnesium supplementation

is the single greatest thing we can do to help people avoid serious diseases

or recover from the ones they already have. It certainly is not the only

thing but there is no other single element that can compare.

The use of magnesium as a preventive, clinical and emergency medicine

would spell disaster for the 1.6 trillion dollar medical industry in the

United States. Single-handedly it could wipe out the need for hundreds of

billions of dollars of medical expenses and diminish a mountain of pain,

misery and death. When combined with some other medical essentials like

Vitamin C, proven antioxidants and minerals like selenium, zinc, organic

foods and full hydration with pure water the reduction in medical expenses

would be staggering to the industry.

There is a mountain of evidence that sustain these statements. For

instance, Dr. Frank D. Gilliland, professor of preventive medicine at the

Keck School of Medicine, and his colleagues monitored more than 2,500

pre-teens and teen-agers in a dozen Southern California communities,

tracking what kids eat and measuring lung function (how well their lungs

work). The team has found that children who eat lots of antioxidant-rich

fruit and juices-as well as those who get an abundance of magnesium and

potassium-perform better on lung function tests than children who eat less

of the nutrients.[ii] Vitamin C plays a big role in lung development,

Gilliland says, while vitamins E and A also appear helpful, especially in

children with asthma. This information is especially important for children

who live in cities and other areas where air pollution is a problem.

According to Dr. Ronald Elin and Dr. Robert Rude, "Refining and

processing of grains and other foodstuffs typically results in loss of 70%

or more of the magnesium content (as well as other nutrients). The

conversion of wheat into flour results in a loss of 82% of magnesium.

Refining rice into polished rice sacrifices 83% of the magnesium. Milling

corn into corn starch loses 98% of the magnesium. When soy beans are cooked,

they lose 69% of their magnesium. Quick-cooking oatmeal provides only about

15% of the magnesium obtained from the slow-cooking cereal. As the nation's

eating habits have gone from freshly prepared items made in the home to

prepared, processed meals and "fast foods" taken on the run, the magnesium

content of the food has plummeted."[iii]

Our bodies simply cannot extract adequate

nutrition from today's "fast" and processed foods.

Dr. David Thomas, who researched government records, found that the

levels of magnesium in the average rump steak have dropped 7%. Milk appears

to have lost 2% of its calcium and 21% of its magnesium.[iv] According to

the analysis, cheddar provides 9% less calcium today, 38% less magnesium and

47% less iron, while parmesan shows the steepest drop in nutrients, with

magnesium levels down by 70% and iron all gone compared with content in the

years up to 1940. Though some of this information is being contested,[v]

academics in the US and Denmark have also reported significant changes in

the nutritional profile of modern foods.

Studies show that people who eat at least three servings of whole grains

a day have a lower risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer and seem to

maintain a healthy weight more easily. Since refined grains, such as white

flour, have their innermost and outermost layers (their germ and bran)

removed, they are stripped of a great portion of their minerals. Whole

grains are not only higher in fiber but contain four times the magnesium and

zinc and twice the selenium. [vi]

Only about 15 to 25 percent of children eat

the recommended amount of magnesium.

Even in individuals who are unwilling to make prudent changes in their

diets and sedentary habits, the administration of certain nutrients and/or

drugs may help to prevent or postpone the onset of type 2 diabetes. The

evident ability of fiber-rich cereal products to decrease diabetes risk, as

documented in prospective epidemiological studies, is most likely mediated

by the superior magnesium content of such foods. High-magnesium diets have

preventive (though not curative) activity in certain rodent models of

diabetes; conversely, magnesium depletion provokes insulin resistance.[vii]

A non-drug abortive approach to migraine attacks has been

the use of 1g magnesium sulfate through a slow intravenous

push during an acute migraine with 85% effectiveness.[viii]

Deficiencies in magnesium affect all people leaving them vulnerable to

developing acute and chronic conditions. We humans are genetically strong

and designed to be well, not ill. Mistakes of living and nutrition break

down our natural strengths. It is thought that each person is especially

susceptible to certain diseases when compared to other people, but each

person is also more resistant to certain diseases when compared to others.

In this sense, each person could be thought to have particular genetic

weaknesses and strengths but nobody is strong enough to live without air,

water, or magnesium for very long. Though in the long run food can be

considered one of the best medicines, it is difficult to recover fully from

magnesium deficiencies through changes in diet only. Even the use of oral

magnesium supplementation is slow and needs to be augmented with quick

acting transdermal methods of application and by intramuscular and

intravenous magnesium in emergency situations.

A magnesium deficiency is closely associated with cardiovascular

disease.[ix] Lower magnesium concentrations have been found in heart attack

patients[x] and administration of magnesium[xi] has proven beneficial in

treating ventricular arrhythmias.[xii],[xiii],[xiv],[xv] Fatal heart attacks

are more common in areas where the water supply is deficient in magnesium

and the average intake through the diet is often significantly less than the

200-400 milligrams required daily.[xvi]

Magnesium is proving to be very important in the maintenance of heart

health and in the treatment of heart disease. Magnesium, calcium, and

potassium are all effective in lowering blood pressure.[xvii],[xviii],[xix]

[xx] Magnesium is useful in preventing death from heart attack and protects

against further heart attacks.[xxi],[xxii] It also reduces the frequency and

severity of ventricular arrhythmias and helps prevent complications after

bypass surgery.

Using magnesium as a preventive medicine starts in pregnancy for there

are significant benefits of magnesium for preeclampsia and eclampsia.

Eclampsia and preeclampsia are the leading causes of death for pregnant

women and their fetuses, particularly in developing countries. Physicians

believe the high blood pressure, swelling, and protein in the urine

associated with preeclampsia lead to the convulsions and coma of eclampsia.

Magnesium is a most effective drug at preventing eclamptic seizures. Now

magnesium sulfate is being used increasingly to treat preeclampsia as well,

with the hope it will prevent eclampsia. A study published in the June 1,

2002, issue of The Lancet confirms this hope.[xxiii]

Women receiving magnesium sulfate had a 27%

lower risk of premature detachment of the placenta.

He has even been aggressive and really horrible to me? Could this be him fighting the sleep therefore making him grumpy????

Hi,

I've been feeling very low in energy lately and wondering if there are anything I could buy from health food shops/boots etc which may help boost my energy levels or if anyone had tried anything natural which had worked for them, someone mentioned a deficiency in B12 can cause these difficulties, although I don't know if thats a fact or not. I have a pretty healthy diet, lots of fruit and veg, good breakfast, very little alcohol, don't smoke, do exercise approx 2-3 times a week, yet feel lethargic, especially in the afternoons, and could quite easily go to sleep and have found myself dozing sometimes. I thought it may be that I needed a snack in the afternoon, but that hasn't made any difference. Also feeling quite headachey..although that could be the heat.I do get a good nights sleep, although do to go to bed and read for a while, and dd is up at the crack of dawn, normally 6.30ish now. Anyone been thru similar and found something which worked for them? Thanks

Hi all,

I was wondering, i know that alot of your children are taking medication for sleep difficulties but what time do you give them the medicine...

Keegan has been taking them for 1 week now, he has to take 2 tabs to help with sleep.

Monday night I gave him the tablet at 8.30 and by 10 he was sparko. But the rest of the week i have been given it to him earlier because on tuesday night gave him the tablets at 8.30 he did not sleep until 11.30,

Wed night i gave it to him at 8.00 and he did not sleep until 1.30

I have now been giving him the tablets earlier and earlier and tonight he went swimming all afternoon and gave him the tablet at 7.00 he is still stimming upstairs, i thought with all the swimming it would make him tired but not him he is still on the go and this is what i was saying to the dr it takes him so long to wind down, he just cant switch off.

Have any of you found the same happens??? He usually reacts to medicines so i was very wary of giving him these... My father has been prescribed the same tablets and he is a big man (about 18 stone) and the tablets knocked him out until 1 o clock the next day....

If anyone is interested in looking at alternatives to the vaccinations then I have just contacted a company in Edinburgh who have been very helpful. They provide alternatives in homoeopathic form to the usual vaccinations and I thought it would be a good idea to let everyone know in case anyone is interested particularly re the mmr etc.

Not sure if I can publisise the website on this forum but here it goes:

www.glovers-health.co.uk.

If you e mail them telling them what you are looking for then they will contact you back. I am waiting on details now to be sent to me in France so it may take a bit of time for me but for some of you it may even be easier to telephone them.I am going to order some for my daughter Molly so will keep you all posted over coming time as to how it goes etc.

They even have alternatives suggested for Samuel such as secretin but as yet I dont know much about this ... just waiting on the info they send

Hope this info may help anyone who has concerns like me!

Been wondering about this for a while. DS (4ys) is iron deficient and on iron syrup. He has always had fairly sloppy poos initially attrubted to toddler diarrhoea but since drastically reducing the dairy in his diet his poos have firmed up. The link with funny bowels and ASD aside my youngest son is intolerant of cows milk so it's in the family. DS eats a good diet so we think the reason he is iron-deficient is because of his bowels and him having a low level of malabsoption. I wonder what other minerals and trace elements he is deficient in as well as iron and think he could do with a supplement. Problem is I can't find any in the shops suitable for children that aren't full of lurid colours and flavours (additives make him hyper). I remember seeing kids floravit in the health food shop which I think did but the shop no longer stock it. Does anyone else use mineral supplements and can you recommend a brand. It will have to be a liquid

Hi everyone,

I've just read a letter from yesterday's Sunday Times magazine which i found really interesting and wanted to share it.

It was about a study by French scientists linking ADHD with iron deficiency in children.

Quote;

"They have linked iron deficiency to ADHD after discovering that 84% of those children studied who had been diagnosed with the condition had low iron levels, compared with just 18% of those children who were not diagnosed with the disorder".

That got me thinking, as my son has ADHD/?AS and he always looks pale. He is a very fussy eater and hardly eats any iron rich food. Unfortunately he has a severe needle phobia, so it's impossible to check his iron levels!

I looked into iron deficiency anaemia a bit further and found out that low iron levels in children can lead to lack of concentration and behavioural problems.

I'm going to try iron supplements on my son and see if it makes any difference.

(I wouldn't advise anyone giving their child iron supplements before discussing it with a Doctor/Health Visitor)

Someone has told me that lavender water on their children's pillow is a great success. Their child now sleeps through the night.

Has anyone tried this, and have they had any success?

Does anybody know or hear of a herbal product from a health shop called Bioforce,Valerian-Hops Complex?. I bought it for my son today as it was recommended by a girl in there to help him go off to sleep. You put 1 drop per age with a little water or juice half an hour before bedtime. Supposed to be soothing and relaxing. The girl said her brother had Asperger's but dont have problem's with sleep.

Sorry if this topic as already been mentioned

Many thanks
