Evening all, I'm new to the forum so apolgies if I get anything wrong in the way I'm supposed to post.

I am a 35 year old woman. I'm married to a ADHD man, and we have a gorgeous NT son, who is 4. I was diagnosed with ADHD 18 months ago and then ASD (specifically Asperger's Syndrome) 12 months ago. I live in the UK.

I was initially prescribed methylphenidate (Concerta) for my ADHD but the stimulant made me suicidal, and caused serious issues with fatigue and a foul temper. I stopped taking it pretty quickly and the effect disappeared. It was recommended that I try Strattera instead and have been taking 40mg for just under two months. The dose is low, because I have a history of being very sensitve to anything that effects brain chemistry (so alcholol, caffiene, anti-depressants, sedatives and general aneasthetics).

For the most part it has helped; the constant anxiety I used to feel has just gone, and I haven't slept this well in . . .well ...ever. However I've also noticed a down turn in my mood again and given how bad I got on the methylphenidate I'm worried that it's going to get worse. From what I've read though, it's not uncommon to have this in the first few months of taking Strattera and I've been told that it will go away as I get used to the drug.

Does anyone else have experience of this?

(I also have a underactive thyroid and take 100mg of Levothyroxine daily).

I've been on Sertraline 100mg a day for a lot longer than I've known I had aspergers syndrome. I was wondering if there's ever been any scientific evidence saying it had a negative affect on aspergers syndrome? Aged 22. Other disords, OCD, bipolar, anxiety disorder, Sertraline only medication.

My partner chats to many people at her works who have all manner of mental health issues as she works at medium secure unit. some of whom are on anti-phycotics.

in one hand it may seem sensible for her to have the trade she has and on the other hand I am slightly nervous just to trust everything she says about medication so im asking you guys on here hoping il get honest and logical responses

does anyone currently take Abilify?

some sights are saying they are the wonder cure for all mental health and other sources say that having 'sudden death' on the side effects is not worth taking it

I don't want to anger the people who care about me, but at the same time im not sure if I could logically justify taking a chance on something that says there is a chance I could just die on the spot??

any thoughts?

We had L's CAMHS appt today to review meds. The psych thinks that the rispiridone has been a contributing factor in increasing L's appetite, because of this, she has recommended that we slowly stop the rispiridone and replace it with aripiprazole - (brand name Abilify).

Has anyone here got any experience of this med? I've never heard of it for ADHD/ASD before, and in googling, I've found it's licensed for use in over 18's with schizophrenia, or mood disorders, and that it hasn't been trialled for under 18's.

If it's easier to PM me with info, I am more than happy with that.

Many Thanks,

Up till a family death 10 years ago I was always bright but had somewhat low self esteem, but in part that was because whilst other 21 year olds(I am 31 now) were out clubbing id rather watch a dvd or play video games though did start drinking once a week but only for a few hours i.e 10pm to 3am once a week and spend under £20.

After the family death I suffered from depression but I think my social issues intensified it

Here is where it gets a little stranger though, at same time of family death I started changing my pattern of living i.e instead of watching a movie or playing a game I had a pc on from waking up to bed time so my concentration was divided between 2 things at once, in the past it was more like I read a book whilst having tv on but apart from the random glance at tv I would read a book.

About 6 years ago it got to the point where I can never focus so am depressed, now and again I will have the tv turned off and play a video game on pc and love it, or have computer turned off and love watching tv but 2 at once I feel spaced out.

Anyway a few days ago I asked for sleeping tablets as this sort of feelings extend into my sleep i.e I wake a lot and no matter if 8 hours or 18 hours I feel spaced out as my mind races with a huge amount of information.

The sleeping pills havent made me sleep less, and I still wake up but I dont toss and turn in bed, and my mind doesnt race when I wake up in middle of night and when I get up I am relaxed.

I am thinking that the reason for feeling bad all the time is the huge amount of information rushing through my brain all the time so the pills just filtered it out so I can get a good night sleep(I have always been one for a good night sleep even when younger and invited to all night parties or a 24 hour games night.

So if I can take something that filters out everything I can recover from years of depression, tried anti depressants and they did nothing

I have never been one to drink or take illegal drugs(or legal highs) because they seem too extreme, if I drink it may relax me a little but then the poison effect numbs my eyes and head and just makes me want to sleep(I get a good nights sleep with drink too) I have tried cannabis but it just chills me out and doesnt actually relax me in that sense and with both drink and non OTC/prescribed drugs I get bad come downs, even a energy drink makes me crash a lot.

Also when I am clear headed I never want to eat very often, but when I am crashing even if taking nothing I eat to stay awake which is why I gained about 7 stone in 7 years and yet at times like when I have had a relaxing day I basically starve as I dont feel like I need to eat as I am not crashing.

So, I went to the doc this week and had some antidepressants foisted upon me- Sertraline. I know there's recently been a thread about this already, but what I'm concerned about is the effect it might have on my ability to work. I'm an art student and I've heard bad things about the effects of antidepressants on creative ability. I've read some accounts that liken the effects to a 'zombie' kind of state, which definitely doesn't sound helpful (mostly because that seems to be my problem in the first place!).

On the other hand some people have said it really enhanced their clarity of thought, which is something I could definitely use as I've been struggling to focus at all since the beginning of this academic year.

Does anyone have any experience with this? (not just Sertraline, antideps in general?)

I still haven't taken any of the pills- I'm waiting 'til I have more information to make that decision.

Thanks, amigos

Hi,

My son is almost 16 and exams are coming up and his anxiety has got a lot worse again. The thing is that he doesn't freak out, have panic attacks or refuse to go to school, he just feels extremely sick, he tells me he wants to go but feels awful (and I don't doubt this, he is a good kid, never in trouble and is as white as a sheet). After lots of physical hospital tests threw up nothing, it was decided he was suffering from anxiety but we have had little more advice than reduce stress where possible.

He was eventually (at my instantance, why you need to push doc's when it is a 3 year problem is beyond my understanding) referred to Young Peoples Dept for counselling. I called in advance to ensure that the counsellor he would see had experience with children with Aspergers (as he would not understand normal counselling, it wouldn't make sense to him from what I have read. Also, from experience, our mental health dept is not the best and I wanted to be sure they helped rather than making things worse) I was assured they would be trained in how to help an aspergers child / teen, however, the counsellor's opening line was "I'm not trained in aspergers but have learnt about it since working here" and "this is my student (cue young female student), you don't mind if she sits in" ummmmm kjaisgdihageuidg\kiwdbka\jbhs... really, you clearly have no idea about a teen with aspergers, meeting you is hard enough, meeting two new people, one being a young female student, NO!!!!! (sigh) After talking to us he suggested 3 sessions where he would teach my son some breathing exercises... ummm he doesn't know when he is anxious, it is more a low level anxiety caused by many things and when some extra like exams come up, or his dad doesn't call for weeks, it tips him over the edge and the nausea gets really bad... again no one is actually listening!! I would try again but it was a huge struggle to get my son to go to that initial appointment and the mere mention of it now sends him into a panic and he refuses to entertain the idea... exactly why I called in advance to ensure we got it right for him, once again another fail

Anyway... being these anxiety problems have been rolling on for 3 years (or more) a colleague at work suggested meds, initially I didn't want to go down that road but being things are so bad I think I would be irresponsible not to even consider it. My colleagues fiance is a pharmacist and suggested Beta-blockers to help control his anxiety, at least for school years. According to NAS, hopefully as his confidence grows from the Socialeyes course he attends with them and as he gets older anxiety will reduce, but in the meantime I would be keen to try this. Feeling sick all the time is most unpleasant for him and makes him feel miserable. Any advice on this?

Thanks for reading.

Hi is there anyone on the medication 'Naltrexone'? Glen has been on this medication since March. Naltrexone was prescribed to reduce the self harm (slapping himself) behaviour. Naltrexone was introduced in the event that this slapping behaviour is perpetured by endogenous endorphin release. There has been a significant reduction in Glen slapping himself since the introduction of Naltrexone.

I just wondered if anyone else has benefited from being described Naltrexone?

My son age 14 has finally seen the Psychiatrist today. It took one and a half hours to persuade him in to the car for the short journey. He kept his dressing gown over his head. I went into the centre and when the Psychiatrist called his name I told him he was in the car. He then came out and my son agreed to walk to his office (non verbally) with dressing gown over his head.

After an hour of chatting (not my son) the Psychiatrist said Fluoxetine 20mgs alternate days for a week and then daily to help the depression and also will help with anxiety. May go up to 60mgs daily for OCD but does not have that. If his sleep pattern is not improved he will think about Melatonin in the future.

Now I just have to get my son to take the medication...............

40mg for last 10 months; I feel GREAT!

It has worked wonders for me in the areas of depression, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder.

My work ethic if high, I love to socialize (after 2 or more pints) at the pub with my friends; not always close friends but people I have a good rapport with and I have shared good times with, although I will always go with a close friend and then talk with other people. I could never enter the pub without a close friend to fall back on.

I just need some employment; part-time employment that is, I have far too many hobbies and interests to work full time. Besides, being around people for 40 hours a week would kill me in 2.

thought long and hard been fighting with myself whether meds is answer to my probs making me feel 'better' or not??? i tried paroxetine before this seems most suited anti-depressant meds to me worked on depression social anxiety paranoia everything i find MH difficult to manage cope with day to day as tried others not felt were suited for me like prozac mirtazapine

like i've explained many times on here prob bored up to dead you prob fed up of hearing my moaning about everything going wrong in my eyes when everything looks so rosy good a part time job friends etc but struggling to manage/cope everyday 'not been feeling right' 'myself' for months been going on for ages just been trying to avoid prolong docs and meds as had weight gain side effect with meds before (risperdal/risperdone) increased appetite aswell as depression heightened junk food comfort/emotional eating of a night when parents in bed this panics scares me incase i pile on weight again and can't shift it! really dont want or need it to be honest! ruined all hard work /effort at the gym etc!

i been cutting my hair with scissors as feel stressed bad! feel so restless drained tired with no route to take feel i been left no option as reached mini crisis last night when was o.k good in morning soon spiralled out of control into bad situation like how started in my early teens turned out so bad wrong so want put brakes on before reaches that boiling over point once again as mum says she can't go through that again i made her ill last time and she physically not up dealing with situation due major back surgery in march she said have me arrested this time if threatened her with knife like last time in early teens if became angry aggressive i hated how made me feel inside .... where will it lead ... i've been told 'get a grip' 'pull myself together' end of stop miserable be cheery!

feel like let parents down all hard work built up over not being 'bad person' anymore fell flat on it's face felt so mad angry at myself don't know why i get iin situation it crying wreck/mess state where just want to 'hurt me' all time want punish me in anyway i know how where does this end if i don't seek help from docs? like before .... do i take risk? carry on like i am wiithout meds?

even thinking of being re-referred back to adult mental team/service so must tell you how much i struggling !!! can i avoid facing up much longer? don't know how long i can keep everything up for?! don't want put my family through this again as caused so much heartache pain hurt felt so guilty to blame ...

so do i just accept this road of meds then?! as mum taking anti-depressant herself since my nan 'went' in 2009 as she was her main carer my mum takes ciltropram (40mg) everyday my auntie on anti-dp's also same since nan 'went' auntie takes them as she has OCD bad controls her life everyday though not dxd so alot family members on anti-dps

really confused over what's best??? if at work feel myself 'drifting away somewhere else' if not there can't completely focus give everything??? and feel like everything drifting out of focus etc

Hi

Our 3 year old son with autism has been to see a Biomedical specialist twice - second time was today.

First time round, the specialist suspected Strep throat, and put him on a dairy, gluten and soya free diet. This was very hard work, but we have now re-introduced dairy (though we have been told to keep it very limited), and are about to bring tofu back in. Gluten needs to be out for some time more, it seems.

Today, the results of some organic acids tests showed clearly that he has some bugs in his stomach - that are associated with this condition, and these need to be cleared out. the specialist said that an antibiotic called Metronidazde was very effective in weakening such bugs, but they can come back to strength again as soon as you stop taking them.

So, in order to keep them at bay so that they do not recur and our son can gain the strength to finish them off by himself, the specialist recommended the GAPS diet for a couple of years.

However, this is unfeasibly strict. In fact the only things he can eat are:

Meat/Fish/Eggs (which are out as he is vegetarian)

Dairy (which is already very restricted)

Nuts (he is not quite yet 3, and we understand that these should not be introduced yet)

Some fruits and vegetables (which he barely eats now - apart from carrots, which are not allowed under GAPS).

Does anyone have any understanding of how this works, and be able to suggest how we might move forward? We cannot ignore the fact that he has bugs that need to be treated. However, we are not just worried that the diet will be difficult, but t is certain that he will not get enough to eat on it. What other ways are there to help his body work with the antibiotics during taking them and then continue to work after the course is over? (without starving him....) Or any other approach?

With interest, my father found the website linked below when he was investigating Mirtazapine for coming off Morphine which he has been using for a serious back problem, the one I am also on for depression and sleep issues, because the doctor found out I had been using Melatonin to aid sleep ;

I'm not particularly happy to be at this stage, but we are finally going to try some kind of medication to see if it helps reduce his anxiety and OCD type behaviour.

We have already been given Alimemazine to give him every night to help him get to sleep and stay asleep.

And the Paediatrician said she thought that a two pronged attack of both therapy and medication was sensible.

He has general high levels of anxiety, especially around transitions and particularly about leaving the house to go out or go to school.

He also has OCD behaviour, fear of germs and contamination, repeated handwashing. His hands are now permanently red and sore regardless of antihistamine medicine for the hives [which is almost permanent now].

Eventhough we have used social stories, and talked and explained about how germs and your immune system works etc. He still has the obsessive thoughts that do not go away until he has washed his hands.

So I am wondering what medication anyone else may have been prescribed for these problems. And how effective were they.

My son will be 11 soon. I really don't like the thought of him being on medication at his age. But he needs something, at least for the forseeable 6+ months, to reduce his anxiety and give any therapy a chance.

If his symptoms did disappear, I would try to gradually reduce his medication to see what happened.

Any of your experiences would be helpful.

All i know is that at 15 and 6ft ,weighing 11 stone with serious behaviour problems something has to be done,is there anything out there to suit him. So far hes had aripiprazol, colonodine, certroline, to name a few. Now its risperidone at 5mg and has no effect. apparently this would put you or i to sleep for days but it seems not to touch the sides. Any one out there with any ideas please?

i have today been prescribed logynon contraceptive pill hoping to see if this makes my period less heavy and easier to manage /cope/deal with each month rather than dreading and making me feel so yukky awful and rough with it! hoping it stablalises my moods too as everywhere when time of month even worse the doc told me the blood (hormone) tests all came back normal levels

so just wondering if it just plain stress worrying causing me feel dizzy tired no energy alot of time! still puzzled mystery still out there not solved but just putting down to depression/anxiety playing up maybe! i got to go back in three months see if it is working and to check blood pressure as risk of side effect of high blood pressure though he checked mine today and was normal fine! and i asked about weight gain and he said i could possibly experience fluid retention but not FAT gain! so that reassures me great deal more!

if i told my doctor i'm having suicidal thoughts/feelings ? would this have to go any further or this that confidential? plucking up the courage tell him today having panic attack over telling him couldn't breathe heart beating real fast scared afraid! don't know if it is cause time of month or if it depression too? confusing on where i stand here all i know is don't feel in good place mentally at the moment!

just fingers crossed it works for the good now!

has anyone had success with this contraceptive pill at all ? as know there's loads different types out there?

Hi

My son [8] was diagnosed with ASD at the begining of march.

He doesnt sleep much, it takes him a long time to 'drop off' he is often awake until 1am not always as late but never before 10pm and on average its about 11:30pm-12am that he goes to sleep.

He typically wakes up 2-3 hours later and will either start doing stuff but as i sleep light [because i have to!] i get him to come into my bed and he usually goes back to sleep for a couple of hours.

I have been reading on forums about the use of Melatonin and i think it could possibly help my son sleep better? [and give me some more sleep...pleeeease give me some more sleep! ]

I am used to this pattern now and cope on very little sleep, i do find the broken nights tiring but thankfully im able to function on not as much sleep as you are meant to have probably as i have no choice!

I just think that maybe he will feel better if he gets a proper sleep? despite him not getting much sleep he is always on the go i just think maybe if hes getting better sleep he'll find it easier to concentrate in the daytime?

So...how do i go about getting him a prescription for Melatonin? does it have to be prescribed by his paediatrician or the GP?

My 7 yr old grandson was given Liq Melatonin 1mg/ml KidNaps brand for Insomnia. He is Aspergers/Torette's.Anxiety/ADHD. We live in Australia and are needing to find out how we can obtain this brnd of melatonin as the compound med the chemist has given us here isn't as effective and we have heard we can import it from the UK.Could someone please advise if this is true and if so how do we go about ordering.

My son is 10 years old and had A.S.D, mood depression and high anxiety levels. He was taking respiridone, but they changed it as he was gaining too much weight. This new medication he is taking is really knocking him for six. Was just wondering if this will change as it gets into his system or not. I dont really want him like a zombie
