Dear All

I have moved the forum onto a new server which is twice as fast as the previous server.

We get very few new posts these days but we do get lots of people visiting the forum for help and advice so I have decided to keep it running for now mainly as an information resource due to the limited new threads being posted.

	All the best

I came back to look at the forum after a long break, and for the last few days it was broken. Now it's working again I see there haven't been any posts since August. Has it been broken for that long, or has everyone just gone away?

As everyone knows we have a forum Jargon Buster which is related to ASD - to be found at the top right hand corner of the page for anyone who doesn't know.

It has been suggested that we start a topic for non ASD related shorthand. So for the benefit of new members and those who find our abbreviations puzzling we have started a list that everyone can add to.

DD - dear daughter

DS - dear son

I don't know what the protocol for this is but it seemed to me that I could not post anything until my membership had been validated.

I took two weeks for my account to be validated and that only after repeated requests and finally guessing the email addresses of the admins. The contact email address of moderators@asd-forum.org.uk is invalid and bounces making it even harder to make any sort of contact.

Now that I am a member I have looked at the member list and I can see that there are at least 14 other people waiting to be validated, some of them for over a month now.

I don't know exactly what criteria you look for in someone's application for membership but there is precious little information available to the admins, so it is hard to see what the purpose of validation actually is.

In any event it seems to take far too long, if people want to be members of a forum they feel that they have something they want to say and making them wait like this is wrong.

I have already advertised my research through the National Autistic Society (NAS) and I would also like to invite people from this forum.

I would be grateful to you if you would participate in my research. Your help will be valuable for future and further research projects related to autism, and how this developmental disorder influences the academic achievement of students diagnosed as having autism.

If you are interested to participate in my research the process is simple. You need to complete a 4 line questionnaire. I am able to provide to you the headteacher and parent/carer consent information sheets and the ethical approval letter by the University of Reading upon request.

Please feel free to make any comment or ask anything related to this research.

Everyone who wants to participate can comment here or PM me directly.

1.Gender
2.Age of student
3. Year when SATS taken
4.Achievement Level at SATs
Subject
Maths
Science
Reading
Writing
English Overall

16/7/14 - I'm still alive and doing very well! And although things ended on a sour note nearly two years ago now my memories of this forum are fond ones. This truly was a place of light during a time of intense darkness, and I'd like to thank all of those who provided words of wisdom and comfort to me, just when I needed it.

The conversations between LancsLad, darkshine and I, are ones that I'll never forget. Each PM and each kind post in their own unique way helped cultivate the man I have become today. Without this forum, during the early days of 2012, I don't know if I would have coped with my circumstances as well as I did.

I'm editing here, as I'm technically banned from the forum and this is my only form of communication. I just wanted to bury the hatchet and apologise for how things ended prior to my departure. I should have known that I would not have copped moderating THIS forum - I capitalise the word 'this' to add emphasis to the fact that it felt as if I was policing friends and family. I didn't feel right, and it sent me into quite the spin. This doesn't excuse my actions, but please know that during this time, my mindset was far from a healthy one.

I post daily on another ASD forum under the name 'Ben' - I shan't name the forum, out of respect for you guys, but if you happen to bump into me, then you know who I am. I'm pleased to say that the help and support I received on this forum, has given me the motive to help others in the same way. It's become somewhat of subconscious passion of mine. Whether I'm right or I'm wrong, my words always come from the heart.

I'm sorry to deface an old thread, but to be honest, this never really got a huge response anyway.

Hope you're all doing well.

Take care.

And so you have responded to my criticism but I notice I cannot quote nor reply, what is it are you playing dirty games already ?

What is it are moderators beyond reproach even when they are acting questionably ?

Go this way I will be gone from here make no doubts about that and that may suit some others I do understand especially those that quote rules when they don't understand.

And as if you think what do I know about moderating, take a look at Depression forums . org and understand this place is extreme small potatoes compared to that, for I was there dealing with suicidal people daily, not aspies really although there were some but real basket cases ignored by society where they come on line to scream !

And if not that, try Collarchat.com inline with my leanings, check out the religion and politics forum specifically.

For yes I have been a moderator on places wilder than this and so I understand what I understand and see what is happening here as amateurish at best and oppressive at worst.

It's not a game you know these are real people you are dealing with, with thoughts and feelings beyond what you can know as after all we are all on the autistic spectrum, that being you have no idea how your actions dishonest or not impact others.

And of the rules you have reiterated for our attention do you understand those rules yourself and do you apply them to the letter or is it your interpretation of ?

I am dissatisfied, this used to be a friendly place but now it seem most unfriendly, get a grip there is more to being a moderator than a title and what kudos you think that brings for moderating any forum is a very hard job make no doubts about that and why I did not proffer myself forward to be a moderator despite myself being here mostly, for I have been there before and perhaps naive I believed I could make a difference when in reality, people, will always be people and we will always disagree.

Now this is the test, will this post I have thought long and hard about be here tomorrow when I wake up, for if it is not I will have my answer, oppression rules okay and I will be gone with a sour taste in my mouth to find a more friendly ASD forum where they have their moderation sorted out to be not a hindrance to the users that come free of charge to help others if they can.

Your response wil be most welcome ?

I have, on my profile page, several 'badges' of friendship. To those of you who have both offered and accepted these 'badges' of friendship, I am grateful, I really am, because it's nice. But beyond being a kind of 'this person seems nice' badge, I can't see any actual technical advantage that these friendship badges offer (not that friendship should be about technical advantage, lol). Am I missing something? Are they really just 'hey, you say decent stuff' badges? I mean, if they are, that's ok - they're nice. I just wonder, that's all.

'Todays Top Posters'

Do you ever look at this and then feel vaguely embarrassed if you're at the top?

Adults only forum

Dear All

I have just had to delete a topic due to the content being too explicit however the discussion related to a valid question and was in my opinion relevant to Autism.

The language used was far too explicit considering we have children and teenagers who use this forum and this begs the question whether we need an adults only forum.

I have created a poll to gauge member feelings towards this.

Many thanks

im sick and tired of seeing spam in the community updates, latley this forum has been infected with spammers. why cant we just delete there accounts altogther so there not showing up at all? its been relentless the last few days, spammer after spammer after spammer, its not a safe enviroment for us, and it doesnt look attractive to see 'http:&^EFBJTGTRVNcandycanesandlollipops$%^^^&88~~~###' on the front page. i know they cant post but they can look at pepoles profiles still, and clealy have some way of getting there spam to us. this is my final say on this subject, just delete there accounts fully instead of just disabling there accounts, PLEASE!

and just to add, i have seen 8 or 9 spammers sign in tonight. at first it was a funny joke but i just want to get on and enjoy talking to my forum friends now i dont want to see, &^&**(%$$%£glowsticksatalowprice.com###:*&"£xcvbq

and i,ll add again disabling there accounts wont cut it, make them vanish.

thanks in advance for whoever does this and makes this forum a better place.

im just playing the devils advaocate here, but i think it would be nice to add some new groups so 1) new members know who to look out for and who to post and pm too and 2) so the members are regarded for there work.

here are my ideas, the coulor there name will be, and what the roles are:

5 star member - the group that are known for giving frequent and top notch advice and guidence. these members go the extra mile to help and would have moderation rights for the general disscussion and help and advice forum. there are a few names that pop in my head strait away that would be perfect for this group but i wont say who they are.

youth team member - the group for the younger members that are good with helping young members and making them feel happy and welcome. the memebrs that give good advice to teens and young adults, and talk in a way that they understand without being to complicated. again, names come to mind.

entertainers - this ones just for fun, this group are known for being entertaining and the life and soul of the forum, known for there creative topics and playful banter.

just to add, ive created this topic just as a thought and im not suggesting we should go ahead and create new groups. but think about it, with more groups, it would add a new dynamic and feel to the forum. i just think certain members deserve to stand out a bit more, and im talking about the members who have helped me through my realtionship break up, my nan dying, my day to day worrys and all the times when ive needed someone to talk to.

i just think its nice to have credit where credit is due. it isnt just about having a title that necessairily means something.

I'm not sure if this is a forum issue or if it's a problem with my browser or with my version of flash - but I cannot play any videos/clips - and have a puzzle piece on a grey background for every single one that has been posted here.

I of course have reloaded my browser and that hasn't made a difference.

I have also checked for updates for my browser and for flash and both are fine (in that sense anyway)...

So I wondered - is it just me? Or is this a forum issue?

I've just checked Youtube and stuff plays there fine.... so is it the forum?

I was just wondering, especially since we seem to have lots of new members (and it appears members who are new to forums) and also with the change in the forum layout, whether it would be worthwhile having either a 'how to...' section (like the guidelines bit) or pinned post, with really simple instructions about how to start a topic, how to post a reply, how to quote one member, how to multi-quote etc.

I thought it may save the mods some work and it would make the forum easier to read because quite a number of times recently, I've come across posts that are just a quote of a previous post, after which I tend to miss any change in the thread if someone later goes back to correct it.

Also, on the subject of ease of reading, I've noticed that many of the older threads (pre-forum re-painting) don't have the quotes formatted correctly anymore - these are ones that were correct (some are ones I wrote) but they are now incorrect; they often say quote in capitals but the quote is actually normal text and it can be difficult without working backwards, especially in multi-quote replies, to work out who said what, what is a quote and what is a reply. Is there anyway this could be fixed?
