  1. I'd say it was well worth applying for a statement. A statement can be maintained until the end of an academic year in which the young person turns 19 as long as they remain in continuous education. Flora

    Forum Diet Thread

Hiya, You might need more protein in your diet. When your exercising a lot your body needs the protein for muscle devlopment, if there isn't sufficient balance of protein and carbs in your diet then your metabolism will lower and you'll lose muscle mass instead of fat. If you up the protein and watch your carbs then this should help. Flora ps... I'm not an expert, but I had a similar problem and this is what someone told me to do and it worked!

    shaking with anger

Thanks all I've totally calmed down now. The boy is a good friend of Ben's, and meand his mum are quite good friends. I'm not going to tell her, but I'm not mentioning that fact to the boys either (don't want to use that sort of threat as a means of discipline IYKWIM), I'm just going to let it drop. It's just been one of those days. My car has been getting a new exhaust fitted so we couldn't go anywhere and I had to wait near the phone to find out when it was ready to pick up! I went out for a nice walk and am not so stressed now. Sometimes I just want them all to s0d off and today was one of those 'sometimes' Flo'
  4. I am looking after Ben's friend for a couple of days 'cos his mum's at work. I noticed in the back corner of my fire place (it's an inglenook) that there was a pile of rubble (motar), I was cleaning it up when I noticed that the incense burner I have in there was cracked in two. I looked around the room and saw a few golf balls lying around which immediately answered the mistery! I called Ben down and he admitted that he'd been throwing golf balls round the room... I asked him if his friend had been doing it too but Ben said he hadn't... but I could tell he was lying because he'd be embarrassed at me telling of another kid! Anyway, asked the friend seperately and he admitted to it too!!! He said he didn't think it would matter because the fire place is built from bricks!!!! The thing is, I recently decorated and got new furniture so Ben is fully aware that there is to be no 'funny business' in that room. I've told them both off quite severely but I'm still fuming. I have told them to stay right out of my way and not put another foot out of line because I am so furious with allready. His friend is really worried that I will tell his mum. I'm not sure if I will tell her because I know for a fact she'll be furious too. Im probably angry out of all proportion but I really am jsut livid and in a real temper. Had to come on here and get it all out to prevent myself from seeking them out and shouting at them all over again!!! Flora
  5. Hiya Maria, Welcome to the forum. What makes you think that your b/f has AS? Are there other things apart from his reticence to commit that make you think that? There are many reasons why someone might panic at the last minute and pull out of making a long term commitment. Yes, people with AS can have difficulties with making and sustaining relationships, but once they are in one I don't think there's anything in the criteria which suggests they can't commit. You obviously know your b/f and his background; but are other areas of his life affected in a way which would make you think he has AS? Does he have have a job? friends? hobbies? Again, the presence or absence of these things wouldn't necessarily point to AS, but a wider picture would give you the advantage on making that observation. I have AS and have never had any problems committing to a relationship. I have trouble living with a partner, that is just me though and there are many people with AS who are happ in live in relationships; in saying that there are also many people with AS who have trouble forming relationships in the first place. Every body is different, but reticence to commit, as I said, could be the result of loads of different things and not all of them related to AS. That all being said, I'm really sorry to hear about what's happened though, it must be very upsetting for you. As Tally said, give him the space he needs, if he wants to be with you he'll come and seek you out that's for sure, once he has got over his panic. I certainly would hold off raising the question of AS with him, because that could cause all sorts of resentment and reactions that you hadn't anticipated. Flora
  6. My own opinion, either as a participating member or as a mod, is that I would not be interested in extending the boards to include a forum for kids/teenagers. I think it would bring with it a whole set of problems that we couldn't even begin to envisage! Definately not something I'm interested in. Flora
  7. Thank you Kathryn Actually, set out like that, it looks like an improvement on the present system! I wonder if in reality that will prove to be the case? Time will tell. I'm particularly liking that final point, regarding costs. The LA's are forcing parents into a position to try to come up with large sums of money to pay for something that they should never have to pay for if the SEN system was working properly. At the moment, those who can find the funds are much more likely to be succesful at a complicated tribunal than those who can't. Maybe this new system will force the LA decision making out into the open and make it less common for parents to be forced into a situation where they have to pay money to put together a case for a tribunal hearing that they shouldn't have to be fighting in the first place! Grrrrrrr. Flora
  8. Yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !!!!!!! Clare that's fabulous news I'm going to toast you now with a huge glass of wine Flo'
  9. Fantastic outcome Jsmum Looking forward to hearing about J's progress over the next few months. Bill's just come broke up from school with a glowing report. It's hard to compare it to what he was like this time last year, and even just a few months ago struggling to settle into his new school and everything. Hopefully we'll be hearing lots of postive things about J in a few months too Flora

  11. Suze, I've pm'd you, but also I was wondering, if he is only doing the core subjects at school, could he do a course at college along side that would be equivalent of GCSE's? Some of the vocational courses are the equivalent of several GCSE's, although I don't know much about them, but I know the IT one is the equivalent of 4 GCSE's. Perhaps a local college might run an agricultural course that might appeal to Jack. Or even mechanical engineering or something? Flozza <'>
  12. I've got a couple of friends who live in the village like that. One of them doesn't have any kids but she has lots of animals and she thinks that qualifies her to tell me exactly where I'm going wrong!!! It really p's me off; I tend to just nod along and try to change the subject. Luckily she's never got me on a bad...yet! Flora
  13. This has gone beyond ridiculous. Clare, bug the life out of the LA tomorrow. Emails and phone calls every hour! Flora <'>
  14. Karen <'> What a sorry state of affairs It's alarming how much good work an ignorant, uncompromising teacher can do in a surprisingly short period of time. If you're determined to home educate and are in a good position to do so, then just ignore everything else I write. I have no idea of the legality of the situation regarding the HT asking you to de-register your ds earlier, but I'm amazed that she has done so without bringing your LA in loop. It rather sounds like she's jumped at the opportunity to get your son out of the school. Also, some LA's refuse to assess if the child is not registered in a school so it might be a good idea to find out the score in that respect. Perhaps you could consider having him signed off sick indefinately and then while he's being home educated the LA will have to provide your son with home tuition. Meanwhile you now have loads of evidence that your son needs a statutory assessment urgently, giving you the opportunity to have a good look at all the options to see if you can find a placement with proper provision for your son's difficulties. A school is only ever as good as the teachers who are in it, as you've found out with this one bad teacher in year 5, but a special school with a whole school approach to teaching children with similar difficulties to your son is more likely to have the expertise and policies implemented that this present school appears to be woefully lacking. Very best of luck with whatever you decide to do <'> Flora X

  22. thanks guys I went today and bought a plain black kilt instead of tartan. There really isn't anyway I could carry it off with the tartan one, especially considering that the one I nearly bought was almost identical to my dd's school skirt Flo'

Sloe gin is the devil's doing! Whoever told you it cures anything was either lying, or under the influence of it's evil power oh... and peeing in your boots? So that's why it took so long for your toe to heal Flozza
  24. Went to Bill's school today for his first annual review. Nothing was changed on his statement, because while it's over a year since the original statement was issued it was amended beyond recognition at the tribunal hearing just in February Lots of positives about Bill's progress. Apparently he's very popular on the resi side with a very close circle of friends who all share the same passion for Sonic and Mario He's very funny, with a very dry and sophisticated sense of humour which came out in all his reports from the teachers. He's already started on foundation level maths in year 9 which he is coping with very well, which means he should be able to handle the higher level GCSE when the time comes The connexions adviser was there and she was great. She raised the question of funding for 6th form, which sent my stress levels up a bit. However, thanks to that it's now minuted how vitally important it is that he has as much consistency and continuity as possible prior to moving on to higher ed, which everyone agrees he is capable of. All in all a very successful review meeting. I was so happy that on the way home I stopped off in Newbury for some retail therapy ... I almost bought one of those kilts that are so much in fashion but decided I might be too old However, I'm seriously considering going back to get one anyway to celebrate the fact that I've now gone down another dress size Flora
