Risperdol is often prescribed in balance with ritalin because it counters the sleep and appetite problems that can be present with just ritalin on its own. It's something not to go into without a lot of research and also your child should be offered regular blood tests. My son was on ritalin briefly but it turned him into a zombie, he was given risperdol as an anti anxiety as well and we carried on with that because he was getting twice weekly migraines through stress and anxiety. However the migraines started to reappear and I wasn't prepared to take the risk of him having a higher dose. Interestingly in America the FDA has refused an application for a license to prescribe risperdol to autistic children, and likewise strattera was linked recently to increased suicide risk, however I don't know the numbers involved on that one. I think there is often a temptation to drug the child so he fits in with society, that is what i felt with my son, it would help him behave at school, although he was out of school at the time. However when the childs condition is seriously affectly whole family well being then it is a very difficult decision to make but sometimes a lifesaver Ruth

My son gets migraines when stressed and someone suggested nat.mur as a painkiller, I bought some but it seems from the instructions that you should take a set amount regularly. The instructions are very small so I have had difficulty reading them. Anyone direct me to instructions in big writing!

Has anyone had any experience of their child being in a split year group. DS has been HE'd but is being reintroduced to school gradually. As from September though he will be with the same classmates in Y5 but with 9 members of Y4 as the school is skint and can't afford to replace the outgoing Y4 teacher. I have tried to explain it to him but he doesn't get why Y4 are in Y5, it's not logical. I need to prepare him as much as possible over the holidays so that he doesn't get totally stressed on his first day back. Also if you have experience how did the teaching work out overall with two different curriculums being taught?

Interesting thread as the 11+ looms it's head in 2006 for my son. I am already thinking about what to do for the best. He is certainly bright enough to cope with the subject matter but the sheer size of the highs/grammars here is going to overwhelm him, plus all the moving around. Mind you first I will have a battle on my hands for him to be able to take the 11 plus on his own, I doubt he will need the extra time but he will need to be allowed to talk out loud to himself all the way through

It was sports day for us today too, but R already decided he wasn't interested so didn't go, but the school is flexible up to a point. I, on the other hand, as other son was taking part was stood on the finishing line handing out place cards and have yet to deforst, never known a sports day so cold. The teacher sounds like an awful bully and a formal complaint wouldn't go amiss although if you work at the school then it might make things difficult WeirdCat

Are there any parents on here from the Trafford area of Manchester? If so you may not have heard of F.A.S.T- Families with Autism Support -Trafford. Actually unless you were at the meeting tonight you wouldn't have heard of it as we replaced the previous long winded title of the support group with this new one. The support group initially started as a parental support group of children with ASD's in mainstream school but now encompasses parents with children at special schools, those who are HE'd, etc. We are suffering a lack of interest from parents probably due to lack of advertising so thought I might as well post here, the meetings are attended by both parents and professionals and we have had speakers in the past from various groups like Contact a Family and someone with benefits advice. Please contact me if you wish for any further details re meeting dates etc WeirdCat

As I am about to post a new topic i thought the least i should do is introduce myself. I'm WeirdCat, remaining anonymous for the moment although some here may well recognise the name and I am a parent of 3 boys, one of whom has Aspergers, he is currently very part time at school and HE. The other two boys are NTish!!
