  1. If I didn't have someone to remind me I would forget all birthdays, even forgot my own a few times, but then I don't celebrate birthdays so I have an excuse. (Well I do a bit but only because I'm told I have to)
  2. I say something like. "You know Iv just realised it my birthday today" That way she wont feel so bad about forgetting herself. Don't know how old your mum is but mine is long past remembering things like birthdays, Its all she can do to remember to get out of bed in the mornings.
  3. I our area the council blocked the setting up of a free school that would have catered for children with ASD but of average cognitive ability from aged 7. The council insist that there is adequate provision even though there is no provision at all for this group other than mainstream.
  4. Lets hope that the experience for the school has moved things on in a positive way. And hope that for your son the memory of enjoyable parts of the day are not over overshadowed by the days end.
  5. That I am afraid is the way of the world. At work I see the same sort of thing, no matter how much you tell any (new) member of staff. Until they witness the consequences of certain actions they do not realy believe what they will be.

    Food Labels

I think it would be helpful if you could give a few pointers how to go about this.

    Food Labels

When you scan something it is saved as a image, (Photo). I don't realy know enough about doing this sort of thing to be of much help. I have to get my son to help me.

    IPAD

Really depends on what you hope to use the Ipad for, what you hope to get out of it. At work one of our residents uses theirs to look at hundreds of family photos and to talk to their family on skype, there's others things on there but never used. Another who's family are about to get them one plans to use it for going on the Internet, so far that's about all they seem interested in, its having the Ipad more than using it for them. (It will be a test of the durability of Ipads with this person) You will most probably need a cases for it. (If it is being supplied it may come with one) and don't forget to keep it charged.
  9. I think your too nice a person, Tally, if it were me I would just give as good as I got. Tell him what I thought of his diet, tell him hes the one with the problem. We all have a bit of a joke and jive. So one of my work mates gets out their food, "Home made today from fresh ingredients" I get out mine "Factory made fresh from the shop last week"
  10. As the compulsory age for being in some form of education goes up to 18 over the next few years, It will be interesting if school are made to provide places for all these children. If they are in employment the actual requirement is that they will have to do the minimum of the equivalent of 1 days study a week. If not in employment one assumes they will have to do full time education and how much are the reluctant students amongst them realy going to get out of it. There realy needs to be a bit of joined up thinking about this. Don't realy have any answers to the OP.
  11. Is she is staying on at school from next September for a year, or is she in that extra year now. If the later it is a bit late to think of a statement, even if she has a year+ to go it would seem a bit late in the day. I take it that what is being said is that the colleges only give SENs support to student who were previously in receipt of a statement of Special Educational Need. You (She) may be able to challenge this.
  12. If it were a new school on a new site it would have had to have had planing permission. So there should be a record of that, you could ask the planing department for details. Some LA now have all Planing Applications on line. If it is a completely new school you would expect it to normally take something like 4 years from conception to completion. It may be a "New school" but withing the premises of an existing school. Running along side it. Not quite the same thing but our LA has this idea that Autism units will be integrated into the whole school. Meaning that they will exist as a separate entity but will not have a separate space, they will be dispersed withing the existing school. (Many think this is not exactly the best of ideas)
  13. Where we use to live they decided to reorganise all the schools. A time table was set out. It finally all happened about 3 years behind schedule. Long after we had moved away. So if a LA announces it is opening a new school in 1 year expect it to happen in 3 or 4 years. Until the first child walks in the door, don't believe it.
  14. I cant say that I have even had an experience of the type you talk about here. But I have had dreams and on waking up have had to do a double take to check that it was a dream and not something that realy happened. Whatever your interpretation of this dreams origin, I do not believe it to be in any way a harmful thing, if it gives you comfort that is a good thing.
  15. I remember one time my mother in law was going on about not liking foreign food then promptly announced that she was cooking spaghetti for tea.

    Food Labels

How good are you at designing you own labels. If you have Microsoft Word it is relatively easy. Then you could print them of onto A4 label sheets. If you have a logo, you can scan that in and re-size it to fit. You could print off small batches changing things like the use by date for each batch.
  17. DLA. I think it's just that there are some people who think that children, or adult come to that, with Autism, should not get DLA, that they are not realy disabled. Especially children, their just naughty children. We have always been fortunate in having the full support of the schools when claiming DLA etc. Our present SENCO is absolutely brilliant at writing letters of support. I think you can ask to have your DLA clam looked at again but I'm not sure if you can submit any new evidence. I seem to think that there the 6 month thing. As for the bullying, they would be right that unless there if first hand evidence from either the victim or a witness then there is very little they can do, but now knowing it is happening there is no excuse for not being more vigilant in the future. So the school claims that he is fine once he is there but his IEP focuses on his behavior?, bit of a contradiction.
  18. Now I know this is a bit (Lot) off topic, but I'm sure the more (Very) mature one amongst us may have the same problem. As I'm getting older my arms are getting shorter. I first realised this when I was no longer able to hold the news paper far enough away to read it, Now I find I am having more and more difficulty reaching down to doing my shoe laces up.
  19. I think one problems now is that the term "Short Breaks" is now being use to describe totally different things, even within the same council. We go to a short break scheme, it is a mobile cinema. There are also various sports activities going on which also go under the name of short break. Also youth clubs of various kinds. The government has given councils a "Short break" fund it seem to use as they think fit. Most of the events funded under short breaks, round here at least, are in fact subsidised and run by various charities, and for most there is a charge to use. Its getting the council to do the assessment in the first place which is the big problem. Despite the fact that it says on our own councils web site that we are entitled to ask for an assessment. It seems that asking and getting are to different things. I have tried different routes to SS, (Letters, email, banging on the door) but all you get is referred back to the same phone number, and when you phone they enter your details and up pops that you have asked for an assessment before and been turned away, so unless your situation has taken a nose dive, you don't get anywhere. I just get fed up repeatedly being told how much there is out there when in fact there is very little that is any use to us.

  21. I would say it does not matter as long as it is a trye friendship. I tend to have different friends relationships with different people. Some are just good company, others are fun, and then there are the real friends, the ones that are there no matter what. Lucky if you have a handfull of them in a lifetime.
  22. Direct payment is were you are given the money to buy the care your self insted of it being provided by the council. So if it was decided that you need respite care then it could be by direct payment. The hard bit is getting the council, SS, to agree you need the respite in the first place.
  23. Be interested to hear how you get on. Sounds like your situation is very much like ours. We have got as far a talking to someone from SS over the phone a few times who comes up with lot of ideas, but basicaly just get told our needs are not sufficient to get any help from SS.(Or any direct payment.)
  24. Quoting from my wife letter, If you are on Incapacity Benafit, Severe Disabiemant Allowance or Income Support on grownds of illness or disability you will be assess for Emplyment and support allowance. They will then decide if you are entitaled to ESA, and if so which group you go into. Those not fit to work or those who with support could work. There are verius rules on benafits depending on what benafit your on to start with. As far as I know someone like your Glen would have been on income support so I dont know how it will work for him. With my wife its not that she could not do a job, its that there are not any jobs she could do. Well there are but after 12 years of looking she has just about given up on the idea of ever getting a real job again. Over that time I cant remeber the number of back to work type schemes she has been on, all to no avail.
  25. My wife now has a date for her medical, she is exspecting the worst.
