  1. All you can realy do is point out the good and bad of both jobs and leave him to make his own decision.

If you try to influence him whichever way and it goes wrong it will be your fault. It will be your fault anyway if it doesn't work out.

My stepson ended up working on the deli counter at our local coop, and he had no idea how to cook. He wasn't particularly good at the job, but he was willing to do all the horrible shifts and always turned up on time. After 3 years he left first to become a care worker in an old people's home which was a disaster, then he become a bus driver which he has now been doing for 5 years and loves it.

  2. Actually I do believe the accounts of the "resurrection" of Jesus to be credible. It was not unknown for people to survive Crucifixion, and where he apparently suffered additional injuries, he may well have survived.

And just as by Luck we come about, why would I question that that same Luck has not strike some where else and maybe many times.

I know people Who say they have experienced the presence of the departed, I believe (There I go again) that to them it was real.

  3. It depends on how you look at it. I wont go through your list only to say most of it is totally irrelevant to me.

For me from a materialistic point of view, the 70s were the best time.

From a happiness point of view mid 90s onwards.

But everything always looks better looking back.

Time is slowly catching up with us, we are still living with the dream that our standard of living etc will continued to improve. This is extremely unlikely to be the case, we have in effect been living off the future. (I mean that from a whole world prospective)

  4. Could you get someone else listen to the messages from him and to contact him and explains that you run the group out of the goodness of your heart and at your own expense. That is it is not a service he has a right to, and that if he want to be part of it he is welcome but needs to remember that he has to consider others and not just himself.

  5. One of my sisters started out as a nurse, got disillusioned with the job and when her children got older she did an access course and trained as a teacher. She never did anymore than GCSE's and realy struggled to get maths. She is restricted to teaching up to KS3. But she is now considered one of the more able if not the most paid teachers at her school.

  6. Health. We have a case of one of our resident who has severe Downs Syndrome, He has the ability of 1 year old (In all aspects of his life). He needs surgery to correct a life threatening condition, and to elevate constant pain. The doctor at the hospital said it was a waste of resources to treat him as his quality of life could not be measured, therefor would not improve. It was only with the intervention of his social worker that surgery is now to go ahead.

  7. As I understand it the onset of age related conditions happens at the normal chronological age and may even occur sooner for these individuals. In general people with more severe learning disabilities have a shorter life expectancy than the norm. This is at least part explained by the fact that they often have other health issue. And I suspect that in the past little attention was paid to their general health.

Funding, 2 years running the LA have reduced the funding. We have had to accept staffing reductions. There is a big reliance on good will of the staff to keep things running smoothly. Many of the staff are actively looking for better paid work. The LA are always reviewing the residents with a view to moving them to cheaper accommodation. There is a rush to move the older ones to Old people's homes ASAP as they are funded to a much lower standard. The residential home arm of the company is at the present time making a loss, it is only by diversifying into other areas of care that they have kept going.

We do not feel that funding is at all secure for our residents.

  8. If it's a wedding reception, aren't the drinks etc all provided (and paid for)?

Only at very posh do's. The last wedding I went to like that was my sisters and she's now a great grandmother.

These days it's One drink if you lucky.

At my nephew they had bottles of wine on the table for a sit down meal. when the meal was over I grabbed a couple of unused bottles and a glass made do with that for the night.

  9. say one is an atheist is just as much a statement of faith/belief as to say one is a Christian - or adherent of any other religion.

The very reason that I do not call myself an Atheist.

I do not believe in any reason for our existences, we are because we are. As (I my opinion) there is no reason, it follows that there are no answers as there are no questions (Why).

(The question "What did God do before Geneses" is realy one for Creationists)

  10. £6 a drink?! blimey! id be happier with the 6 quid! thats daylight robbery! for 6 quid i could get 6 liters of diamond white and get smashed out of my face, and with 2p change.

If you think that's daylight robbery you need to get out a bit. We are going to a family wedding in the August, we could have stayed at the hotel overnight, at a special rate, it would only have cost the 3 of us about £400 for one nights stay, Breakfast not included.

Instead we are staying at a Premier Inn for 4 night cost about £200, (Breakfast not included).

  11. I think the cards are a good idea, not sure about T-shirts etc. People have all sorts of things on T-shirts and I never takes a lot of notice. They could draw same unwelcome attention. What would you say on it? If it was a slogan, how would that let others know its about the person wearing the T-shirt and not just a campaign message.

  12. When I was in primary school we had 1 teacher for a class of up to 40 children

You lucky B-----d. In my day it was 1 to 47.

There was a fixed number of classes (the size of the building) and the school just had to take all the children from its catchment and that was it.

When My Dad went to school (The same school) if all the children turned up there were not enough desks and chairs for them. So for him I was the lucky B-----d.

When I went up to secondary school the class sizes were about 30, which was considered small.

At my sons first school the the class sizes were all under 20 with a TA, his reception class was about 15.

At his present secondary school the class sizes average about 22.

  13. 2 of the adults I work with are in there 40s have ASD. Its not something we realy do but if I had to put a developmental age on them it would be something like 5 or 6. If I am honest, as much as it is the intention that they are working towards independent living, it is most likely the next phases of their life will be old age. They will progress from the residential home they now live in to a old people's home. Both of these individuals lived with their parents untill there parents could not cope any more.

  14. It is only in State school that there is a requirement for teachers to be qualified. Independent school, academies and free school can employ "Teachers" who are not hold a teaching qualification.

Having a teaching qualifications on its own, does not make you a good teacher, and certainly does not give you all that is required to meet all the challenges that Autism's present. In my experience it is often the experience TA who guides the less experienced teacher.

I would agree that in some instances, TA are used for who class teaching in place of teachers, which is wrong.

But, if I step back and look, I would see that that a large part of the time my son is at school, it is the TAs that he is interacting with. Would it make any difference to him if the person who helps him with his cookery is a TA or teacher. The 1 to 1 he has in PE, TA or Teacher?. The person who runs the lunch time club? The homework club?

I personally think, at my sons school, at the present time, for him, the balances is right.

And yes there are many instances of children being little more than babysat when at school, but who is to blame for that. The TA? The teacher? The school? The LA? The system?.

It is realy down to how a school is run and how they use there resources that can makes the difference.

If all the TA in a school, which at primary level often outnumber the teachers, where replaced with qualified teachers, we would need to finance the education system to a much higher level, at the end of the day, as they say, some one, us, the tax payer would have to foot the bill.

  15. Alarm bell rang when you said about the collage that would put him in for GCSE, This summer?. Of course they will be happy to teach him for the next few weeks and put him in for the GCSE exams, and take your money, but if he has missed so much schooling he doesn't realy stand much chance of doing well.

I'm assuming he is 16, this stage I would be putting all my energy into finding him a place at a suitable establishment for the next academic year. (September).

  16. Our son has always had certain foods he would not eat, The list got so long it was almost impossible to find anything he would eat, but its got a lot better now. Hes now 12. One thing we found was that he does not always feel he is hungry. He now eats more out of habit, its time to eat, rather than having any desire to eat. He would happily have rice and cheese for every meal. What he will eat is often influenced by the environment. When at my sisters house he will eat almost anything put in front of him. What he will eat goes in phases, thing go in and out of fever.

Despite his very limited diet and small amount he eats, he was underweight as a baby, still is, he is seldom ill and always has plenty of energy. The only real advice we ever received (From the medical profession) is to give him a multi vitamin supplement.
