  1. Hi all, am on the waiting list for Earlybird but they are having trouble finding enough parents to run the course (only need 6!) If anyone reading is in Christchurch, New Milton, New Forest or anywhere nearby with a pre-school child they will consider putting you on the course without an official diagnosis if your child has any type of speech or language delay. Not sure how to do links and dont know if I can put contact details, but you can find a contact for Earlybird through the NAS website and they put you through to your local contact, ask for the New Forest team. May see you there!
  2. I cried too. Have sent an email to BBC3 also saying 1. well done 2. put in on BBC1 3. consider a programme re Aspergers/Autism & schooling. If enough of us suggest it, who knows.....
  3. Totally with you!!! The getting in bit is okay, the swimming (which lasts about 15 minutes before someone wants to get out because bored/too cold/hungry/you name it) is quite nice - although it doesnt count as exercise for me because all I do is walk in and get wet - probably burn about 3 calories extra, but I can honestly say that being in a cubicle after swimming with my two kids is about as near to nervous breakdown as I get...... .....I remember before I had kids (ie - when I thought that being a great parent was going to be a doddle) I used to think I'd never give my kids a crisp or a chocolate button - I have about 6 pks of each in my swimming bag
  4. Am feeling crushed for my little girl (NT), age 4 and a half - her little brother (likely ASD currently undergoing working diagnosis) is getting more and more aggressive towards her and I find myself less and less able to think of things to try. She tries really hard to interact with him, help him etc but it is as if she doesnt exist - the only time he takes any notice of her is if she is too close to me or something he wants and then he hits or headbutts her. I am making regular 'special time' for her with me and/or her dad but I just wish I knew of something that could improve the situation rather than just making amends for the fact that she is constantly having to be patient or move along or give him the toy, etc.... I'd be grateful for any tips, anything thats worked - good books you;ve read - the behaviour management stuff I'm looking at all requires the child to have some sort of communication/understanding and my little boy has virtually no communication or social understanding at present, I really need to find ways of increasing his tolerance of her but am completely out of ideas.....
  5. Hi Nicky, was interested to read your post, my son is just coming up to the 2yr 9 mth and I'm lost too! I have got a good SENCO so have been very lucky in that respect - do you have Portage in your area (they have a website - not sure how to link it), I'm only on the waiting list but already they've been absolutely fab. I know so much depends on the personalities involved. My daughter (4yr 9mth) NT has started mainstream and I took the opportunity to chat to the headmaster about my son and statementing - when I should come and see him to discuss it etc., and while he was very polite and friendly about it, he made it clear he wasnt keen on statemented children. I think I caught him at a bad time because he has to find 17k for a disabled loo and has just made some teaching staff redundant.. but talking to him made me realise just why the schools are unable/unwilling to fufil the statements I know this is no help really, but just wanted to let you know you're not alone! 6. Thanks Alphazebra, that is a comforting thought, Melba.
  7. Hi , This is an interesting post for me as we are just starting out on our journey - so while I try not to ponder 'why?', I just can't help myself: My son was born by 'urgent caesarean' and I have to say they did seem to have trouble getting him out and he was quiet for a long time before he yelled - however he scored ok on his Apgar.... On day 1 of his life I passed out while breastfeeding and dropped him on the floor (the thought of this still makes me sick) While pregnant I had a MASSIVE filling done on a broken tooth - I wish I'd known about the mercury thing because I would have had the damned thing taken out instead. However, it has to be said that both my husband and I do have certain 'traits' and wonder if the two of us combined have made this unique little chap. He walked at 8 months, which was scarily early, everything seemed ok until about 18 months, he didnt have any real reaction or significant change at the time of the MMR (which I gave him at 15 months when there was a measles scare in his nursery - his aunty is a nurse in ICU and had seen some fatal measles cases which scared me) I ate tons of fish during my pregnancy, didnt drink or smoke or eat anything I shouldnt (there werent any warnings on fish at that point!) At the moment my fave theory is the build up of mercury in the food chain etc. combined with my filling and maybe the vaccine if it had Thimerisol in. I'm told the vaccinations in the UK didnt have mercury in? However, as a complete sidetrack I used to do some voluntary work and memberships with various whale and dolphin organisations and we used to think the build up of mercury in pilot whales was what was affecting their sonar navigation and getting them beached - I think I just cant bear the thought that it was because I dropped him or gave him the MMR......

    obsessions

Hi all, my two year old loves: Sand (trickling through fingers and throwing) Stones (trickling through fingers and throwing) Water (pouring with a cup) Toy Story Switching TV, video, DVD, lightswitches, plug sockets on and off (usually about 5 minutes before the end if its something we're watching!) Watching the trailers at the beginning of disney videos over and over again Fast forwarding everything.... He's just getting into train tracks, the big question is - Thomas the Tank - do we go there or not?!!!! By the way - for those collecting rubber bands - you can make a ball of rubber bands that you keep adding to, makes a great bouncy ball! Mel
  9. Dont you just love statistics?! Could it be that you have to be fairly intelligent and articulate and devote lots of time (unpaid) to getting anyone to take you seriously and therefore get a diagnosis (and show up on the stats)?
  10. Thanks to all you guys for your welcomes, they were most appreciated this afternoon - my eldest daughter started school today and I decided we would walk there (have been eating too many chocs of late!!) - in my imagination it was going to be wonderful...... ....my little girl was ready - snack/drink, gym kit, bookbag, tags sewn into every bit of kit... ...my little boy had other ideas - firstly trying to get him into a nappy or clothes was impossible and he stripped off faster than I could catch him, it looked like a Benny Hill sketch with my daughter stood patiently in the hall saying "are we going now?" over and over and me racing through after the naked boy, once he was in the buggy he decided today he was going to take straps off, launch himself out of the buggy and stick his fingers in the interesting spokes of the front wheel of the buggy - I cant even tell you how many times!! I got a buggy board as its quite a long journey to school - however if Ruby jumped onto the buggy board (and we tried many times) Archie had a meltdown which resulted in her screaming at the top of her lungs "he's scratching me, AAAGGGH!" In the end I put him on my shoulders because we were going to be late and then he ripped about three handfulls of my hair out..... ..needless to say when I turned up red faced, sweaty with fuzzy clumps of hair sticking out none of the other mums really seemed to want to chat....oh well!

  14. Hello! My 2 and a half year old son is not talking yet, has limited eye contact, spends almost all of his time jumping on his toes and tensing his arms (now with a grimace) - he really only wants to play tipping sand/stones and water from a cup, but will occasionally play with a ball or roll cars off the table. He loves Disney videos but cant sit down to watch them, has to keep moving. He does like cuddles. He doesnt seem to understand us communicating with him at all. He doesnt like contact with his peers but is okay with a select number of adults. I have had his ears tested (perfect), am on the waiting list for portage, waiting list for EP, have an appointment for speech therapy, waiting list for Consultant Paed, have an area SENCO involved at nursery, so I think I'm doing ok, HOWEVER All day every day it seems I have people (well-meaning) saying "there's nothing wrong with him", "its normal", "the second child always talks late", "it's a boy thing", "his sister talks so much he cant get a word in", "he gave me eye contact", "he knows what hes doing", one person suggested I wouldnt have even noticed if I hadnt been at work so much and he had been my first child?!(3 days per week and WHAT?!!!!), "oh he gives you cuddles so it cant be..." etc, etc - I'm sure many of you have been poo-poo'd like this. When I found this forum I had to keep logging out because the relief made me cry! Reading your posts has made me feel I must trust my own judgement and keep going no matter if others do think I am neurotic/making excuses for his behaviour so THANK YOU!!! Mel p.s any tips for around the New Forest area?? In particular I would be interested to get specific names for any professional with good experience of ASD who could assess/dx my son so I can ask for a referral as and when I get to that part of the journey
