Getting the best possible education for my child, which means learning to navigate my way through the SEN minefield!
  1. Hi Sally, thank you very much for your detailed reply (sorry that you had to type it out twice too) I wish that I had asked earlier as the AR is this week. We have all the reports in from SALT, OT and Ed Psych. SALT has said that DDs progress is so slow that its not worth running ab assessments again this year (some CELF tests were carried out last year) Ed Psych has carried out some WISC IV tests, but not a full assessment. DD is currently in mainstream, but we are going to be asking for a SS at the AR, as the most appropriate placement for her. She spends so much time outside the main classroom with her 1:1 support, that we consider she would be better integrated in a SS classroom. I have really left the organisation of the AR up to the school, in terms of who has been invited to attend.
  2. Who should normally submit reports for an Annual Review? The reason I am asking is that DDs class teacher has not submitted a report for her annual review and has told me that she may not come to the meeting either, if there is no one to cover her class. Is this normal? Surely, she has had enough notice to arrange class room cover, if she wanted to attend the meeting. I really don't think its very good practice to be honest, but it doesn't surprise me as this particular teacher has very little contact with DD and leaves it all up to her 1:1 TAs!
  3. Sally, thank you, you have put it much better than I could have done! She has made progress, but only because of very intensive SALT awarded by Tribunal, but ever since then, at each AR the SALT has been chipping away at the level of provision, reducing it from weekly 1:1, to monthly and now recommending discharging her!
  4. Justine, thank you we are in mainstream primary but we want a special school for secondary. Sally, thank you, that is just the sort of advice that I need! The SALT is wanting to discharge, giving the reason that DD has ASD as the reason why, SALT is arguing that she will make little further progress with social communication due to her ASD, which is something that was refuted by the Panel when we went to Tribunal, who awarded WEEKLY 1:1 SALT, which has really benefited DD and it is clear to see that she can and has made great progress with her social communication skills, due to the input from SALT, including social skills groups at school.
  5. The Code of Practice clearly states that professionals should be able to make clear recommendations regarding suitable placement at the Year 5 Annual review. At the moment, while they are all asking ME what my views are on secondary placement, they are all being very evasive and NOT making any recommendations, contrary to what they are required to do. The CoP states: 5:69 All concerned with the child should give careful thought to transfer between phases. Advance planning is essential. The move should initially be considered at the review meeting prior to the last year in the current school. Thus consideration of transfer from primary to secondary education would need initial consideration at the review in year 5:70 At the review in year 5 it should be possible, in most cases, to give clear recommendations as to the type of provision the child will require at the secondary stage. I am still waiting for the Ed Psych report and the SALT has told me that as she comes under Health, she is not allowed make any comments on school placement - I'm sure this isn't right, but can't find anything in law to support my view.
  6. Sally, that's great news! Well done to you for persevering and what a nightmare you have been through!
  7. Thanks Chris, that's very helpful. I will have a read. I think that I should name change to "Uncharted Water" as DD's secondary transfer will coincide with the introduction of the new SEN regime, which I presume means that all the old case law that I could previously rely on will be torn up and we will all have to start from scratch!
  8. One of our local special schools is in the process of converting to an Academy school. I was considering it for DD, but I would like to know the implications of it becoming an Academy. DD has a Statement. As I understand it, Academies set their own admission criteria, but our LA have their own criteria for naming a SS on a Statement. If anyone can point me in the direction of info on this or has experience of a special school that is an Academy, I would be very grateful!
  9. Well said Sally! I am so hoping that the final SEN reforms take this on board, but my LA, which is notorious for dragging parents through the Tribunal system, has just been made a Pathfinder for the proposals in the SEN Green Paper, which does not bode well.............
  10. Sally, I have been looking out for your news! Congratulations and well done to you! You must be very proud of yourself. Your son is so lucky to have you as his Mum, to be his advocate and ensure that he gets the education that he needs, not the education that the LA want to grudgingly give him. My DD has blossomed in mainstream, with the support and therapies that we won for her at Tribunal. I am sure that your son will blossom too in his new placement. Sorry about the hangover, but I hope that you enjoyed the celebration. As to the finalised Statement, if your LA are anything like mine they will wait till the last possible moment until sending it to you!
  11. Oh Sally, I saw that you had posted and got all excited thinking that you had received the decision! Stay strong!
  12. They sent mine by email automatically; I don't remember specifically asking for it by email, but then again, I may have done and forgotten due to the stress and strain of it all! Good luck!
  13. That's great news! Thanks for sharing and do please keep us up to date with how your DS is doing.
  14. Sally well done to you! It sounds like it went very well! The 2 week wait after is just agonising, worse than that Tribunal itself in my experience. I have everything crossed for you!
  15. I will be thinking of you on Monday, but I know that no one could have prepared better and worked harder than you! Hope that you have a restful weekend and get some sleep. Little tip - take a lovely photo of DS with you to the Tribunal, I did and it helped me to focus on who I was doing this for and I hope that it helped the Tribunal members to remember that we were talking about an actual child, not just a pile of papers and reports. Good luck!
