  1. Hi I am living in colchester at present where i am doing a post graduate degree in speech an language therapy. there is a centre here called Autism east anglia and i know they run both residential and day services for adults.
  2. I do a form of martial arts which includes meditation and breathing exercises and when i did it regularly I found it helped me a lot I plan to do it more when I finish my uni course. I am living in Essex at present.
  3. It was a mixture of things I feel partly bullying, partly sensory and social issues and it is interesting that she will go in in the afternoon as I would not go at all and my parents were told to physically force me to go to school. In the end I got 5 hours a week home tuition. The schools tried their best but half the problem was nobody really knew what was wrong and I was not diagnosed. If she would like to email me privatly she is very welcome. I would not say anything constructive only cry or shout and baracade myself in my bedroom. It could be the case that she is so overloaded at that time she is physically unable to speak, I have been like that. Charlotte

  6. where are you visiting i used to work in a special needs school that does day and residential and also does assessments for the children first is has in house OT SLT and physio etc and knowledge on statmenting and appeal etc. even if the school is not right for her the assessment can be very useful
  7. with autscape it is not always in the same place, Bath is just where it was last year this year it is in west yorkshire. you could join the chat group to find out more and can chat generally whether or not you decide to go and there are other parents on there. It is more adults but there are some children there as well and they do provide child care so parents can attend the talks and activities, not that children are stopped from attending them but some maybe more appropriate than others for them to enjoy / find of interest. here is the outline which links in to what talks were last year http://www.autscape.org/programme/. here is the link to the chat room and some info about who can attend what http://www.autscape.org/experience/ these are last years fees as a guide http://www.autscape.org/registration one good starting point could be a school i used to work at until i went to university as even if it is too far away to be a possible choice or you don't want him to board, or it is not suitable they assess children first for a few days looking at things like life skills, speech, language, any need for occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, physio therapy. and general educational abilities and all the therapists work at the school. then such information can always be used to help find other schools based on the child's needs and abilities and they maybe able to suggest other places. the school goes from age 7-16 and the college 16-19 http://www.st-marys.bexhill.sch.uk/

    Howdy

    welcome where are you from
  11. i got diagnosed after self recognition at the maudsley hospital in london they were very good. and then attending autscape along with my diagnosis opened up and made a big difference to my world. it took time to accept and some days i still find it hard but they are a lot fewer now and i would never change having had my diagnosis. as for friends and relationships if i am going to become close or a good friend to someone i always tell them but very rarely straight away. I feel and have learnt that if they are a good friend and the type of friend i need they will except me as me as my aspergers is part of me. i the past i have put it on application forms for jobs but i think now rather than do that i would leave it off and tell them in the interview, i see it as important incase i have difficulties later on which has happen and it has made a difference to how situations may have turned out. whenever i apply for an education based course i always put it on the form as it makes a significant amount of difference to the help and support i get. I would never i believe be as far on in the course i am doing now without that support. Autscape showed me i can do if i am determined with support what i dream as long as it is realistic.
  12. is there a support group or social group for parents and or children in your area? the national autistic society may know. is he still being bullied and how old is your son? have a look at the Autscape website autscape.org you may want to think about coming to the conference and bringing your son.

    ball blankets

hi i have a weighted blanket from america (i am in the uk) and it was the best thing i ever bought and cost just over £100, the company make them to order and have hundreds of fabrics you can choose from. i am now awaiting a new one from the same company and the only reason i am doing so is because i want one hevyer and full single bed size and this is costing just over £300. so i would say they can be great for ASD adults as well but it depends on sensory needs as some may hate it. I also have a weighted sports jacket which is good.

    Heya

hi I am also from the south east, though at present i am living in essex where i am at university doing a masters course in colchester. I did my undergraduate course in east sussex at sussex university where i studied Linguistics and took a number of electives in psychology subjects. I had an MRI as part of research last year looking at changes and activity in my brain.
  15. where abouts are you from? the national autistic society maybe worth a call on this one
  16. would he respond if you emailed or text him? i am more able to say some things through typing even when i am in the same building as another person.
  17. i think what you are saying is far from silly and i totally know what you mean. i went to a group some years ago and for me having worked with special needs children it was more like a day at work than and enjoyable occasion. since then i have not really tried another group but know others have not had the same experience. but what i have found good is the groups i have helped set up at both my undergrad and postgrad university and organisation called autscape which has a yearly residential conference and online forum running throughout the year.
  18. i think the letter is a good idea. i just typed out some ideas of tips you could give but some how lot them. what you could do is contact the people you will be seeing or ask them when you see them (if the appointments are far enough apart) what they would like to know form your parents.
  19. i had it done at the maudsley hospital in london (very good) about 5 years ago from what i remember it was around £1400 but i have no idea what it is now and how it varies from hospital to hospital
  20. i 100% agree you cant go on like this i did and i made me ill. does he know you have aspergers? i can understand you wanting to suppress them at uni i did in my undergrad at sussex and still do to a degree in on my postgrad course. you home though should be your place where you can relax and be yourself as much as possible. could it be easier to write it down and read it to him? i agree there maybe shock at first and some time of getting used to but as was said above if they can not accept you for who you are then they are not the right person for you longterm as it is only your health long term it will affect most. always will to chat
