    whats an IEP?

my ds has an iep its a sheet of paper which states what phase your child is on:school action, school action plus(my ds) then it goes statement. then you have a list normally three of targets: my ds is counting to 20 learning certain letters of the alphabet (on his is five letters) then thelast one is peoples emotions and the impact of his actions on them. then they list the resources they are using to achieve these targets.ie whitboard, flashcards etc then the list of achiements. then it is signed by both class teacher and senco it also has the date in which it will be reviewed. with my ds he also has a speech/language plan running along side. hope this helps you.you will only need an iep if your child has learning diffculties but i would inquire if your child needs one.
  2. the phelps act was brought in in 2003 about education neglect when a teacher or another professional within education despite their skills and knowledge and resources fail to meet the childs needs.on the ipsea website under educational negliance. the lea you can hold accountable for it.
  3. hiya ive just found out he is the labour shadow education minster for kent.
  4. just another update, ive just got off phone from the counceller and he said he had meeting a couple of weeks ago over this matter with the lea and their repsonse was the school was basically judge and jury(his words)he told them he was not happy with this answer and basically called for my permission to take it further ,which i said yes as it wasnt just about the dwp form being incorrectly filled in.by the way he told both the sch involved and lea that this woman was not to fill anymore of these forms out from now on.he has a friend that is also a governor at this school and they have discussed it and now plan to go above the lea head and to a higher authority to get this woman either retrained or removed from senco.he will be putting on this in writting and taking it to the educational body that controls my lea.so all that hard graft with paperwork looks like im getting somewhere at last.i can honestly say this man does not mince his words with myself and lea.
  5. hi guys wow what a result today, after yesterdays new appeal news.Has you all know ive lodge an complaint against ds previous school senco with the chair of govs of that sch, lea,mp and counceller for educational matters well today he the couceller left a message on my phone saying he has told the lea he is disgusted and not satisfied with their conduct with my ds and wants something done and is desparte to talk with me he even left his home number to call him on.i myself have called lea before this message and they tried to say its down to the school until i quoted the phips act at them in which they went quiet and said they would get the relevant person to call me on monday.so will keep your guys posted meantime im also preparing my case for the appeal for dla.
  6. well done, glad you hadnt hadto struggle with them
  7. reading the one for school action plus although im in the kent area,my senco/head as put that all into place,he is about to have his iep reviewd and they are going to tell meon tues(parents eve) where excatley he is on the p scales.i cant seem to find the document for east kent lea which is being a pain. do all the leas have the same basic critia?
  8. hiya my twins are nearly four and they will play by acting out they are other people ie.an old lady etc.they will play rough and tumble, the draw and colour.the will build things togethr or seperately.they dress up thats kind of ting on theother hand my asd son whom now is six still only plays with cars by lining them up,putting them in colour order,he will dress up but only in his scully outfit then goes off and plays with his cars with the outfit on.he doesnt really play with his siblings asit causes fights and wont play with other children,he perfers to play on his own.however my aspergers nephew is very socialable but lacks the social communcation ability to interact with others like other average children do,ie he thinks everyone wants to play with him even when they have said they dont that kinda thing.his play consists of dinosaurs and nothing else.with both children ou also have to watch what you say as they will take things literally.ie mum going to cook herself tonight not dad.(he thinking she actually going to cook herself not he dinner)
  9. hiya, can i ask kat how you got into this kind of work please? i have five children(two of my ds are adhd and asd) and at the moment im also doing a child psychology course and am interested how you can go into this line of work.
  10. thanks guys, not sure if they do backdate if he does get it changed.
  11. hiya as you may remember from previous posts that i first pplied for dla for my asd ds in april last year.(due to his previous sch senco incorrectly filling in his dwp form,in fact she left it blank) when i contested after him being turned down they reviewed and gave him low for care(this is a child tha needs 24 h supervision due to his aggression and lack of sleep etc)after sending a letter fom his nurse dispte all the reports from his specialist paed/salt and loads of other stuff from when he was two(he now six) it then went to appeal but they turned him down and said they have no doubt he is autistic and have needs more than a child his age they were still going on the orignal senco letter and turned him down.so i then sent a lettr to them from his specialist paed/one from his new senco/head of sch along with the complaint letters to and from mplea/chair of gov/counciller for educational matters.two from the chair admitted that they incorrectly filled out the dwp form and that ds has sen and the were including what has happened into their sen policy now. so inthe post today ive a new appeal date as last decision as been set aside and a represtive from the kent autistic trust is attending with e to support me and thomas. so im hoping all will go in ds favour as i need to sort private speechfor him as he gets it within sch but its only once a month so not enough for him. the appeal is in april so will let you guys know what happens and as for the previous senco i think she is being retrained but leaving that in the hands of the lea/councillerand mp to deal with and they are updating me.
  12. the way i understand it is that you need at least two ieps to put in for a statement http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/_doc/3724/SENCodeOfPractice.pdf if the school isnt keeping an iep then i would take it further, ie chair of govenors and lea as this is part of your evidence for a statement. why let your child suffer for her ignorance in sen matters, maybe quoting the law every child matters may make her sit up but i certainly would go above her and get what your son needs, with my sons previous school i wrote a written complaint both to the chair of governors, lea.local mp and an education counceller in which the school now admits in writting that they failed my son and they are reviewing thier sen policies within that school. i have also noticed that the previous schools senco is spending alot of time with my sons new senco/headteacher during school time so maybe a little retraining going on there.
  13. hiya its a difficult one that?how much support as the school given to your son?is he on school action plus if so have you at least two ieps that have been reviewed?if he not on school actionplus then i would personally move him then give the new school copies of all reports from the very beginning and tell them he needs extra help and that you will be looking to have him statemented thats what i did with ds with his new school as previous was no help at all with him(long story)new sch put him on sch actionplus and his first is being reviewed next week and they collecting evidence for statementing.hope that helps with your decision and good luck.
  14. my ds clearly had problems from the age of two and he only was dx last week,he is seven this year.i do belive if he had an early dx we would of coped better and had an earlier understanding as well as sorting his education problems at school alot sooner.
  15. hiya,i have five children,3 at school and two about to start in september, they are four next month.

    MMR

i personally do not think there is a link.i had a bad pregnancy where ds had an kidney infection whilst carrying him and also i had plecenta previa.ds didnt have the mmr till he was four and by that time he very clearly had his problems.all four of my other children have had the mmr and none of them have asd, just one other has adhd which is very clearly from his dad.but it is your decision.i personally wouldnt have it done till they are four and just before they start school, you can request this to be done as the child is a little older and the body can cope with much more.Measles is a terrible thing to have,i had it when i was ten and mumps with boys can make them infertile in later years so i really wouldnt avoid it but it is your choice and im sure you will make the correct one.
  17. i have now posted two comments, one about my adhd son whom has no behaviuor issues and also about my husband whom is adhd and in his forties, neither have appeared and in the second i have commented that my first hadnt appeared and that they only want to show those with behaviour issues and those with lack of knowledge saying it does not exist,i explained what adhd actually was i.e. hyperactivity, lack of concertration, impulsive, sleep problem, cant remember things etc and that all adhd people do not have an behaviour problem.makes my blood boil when they have this sterotype of adhd.
  18. my son can also be like this especially whilst out everyone has to walk in a certain order a real nightmare so i know where you are coming from.the older he gets the harder its becoming regarding isssues such as these which if noone complies turns into a meltdown.
  19. by law they have to record it in the accident book then tell you in writtingon the same day,any other incidents to be recorded in incident book.,Everyone dealing with children ie.childminders, playschools and schools etc have to do this by law.
  20. i also had placenta praevia and difficult birth
  21. hiya i will also if you would like me to.
  22. good luck ive been fighting my ds since april the only gave him low for care and nothing else, despite reports and his communtity nurse a long with salt, new senco report and been given a special needs buggy,he is seven this year.
  23. hiya il take a look if you like, ive just been through simialar thing.
  24. hiya,if teacher doesnt give you number then call your lea as they will have it.
  25. hiya, sorry to hear your having a rough time.My salt is very good my ds is 6 and aged 3.05 yrs on the scales.i did ask him to be refered back to hosp although he was being seen and still is within school they done furthr block of 6 one to one sessions with him.It isnt just about speech which my ds sint very clear on but also the language side in which they use mirrors etc for him to learn peoples emotione etc.your the salt and ask for him to be refered back to the for another assesment to see if he needs it outside school as well. good luck and hope all goes well.
