Welcome to this beautiful word of Home Education. Been doing it since October 2009 second time as did it when my kid was 5 for a year now he is 12 and been out of Ed since October.Lonsdale Letts allow you to get coursebooks and workbooks at school rates if you drop them a line and tell them you are home educating. Makes all the difference with the price. Also website What2learn great website. Parentintouch another good one. The Yesterday channel and bbc4 do excellent documentaries. Also BBC 2 has just completed a series of 5 science programmes on How Earth Made Us. should be available on iplayer. Just take your time and rebuild the confidence and self esteem that has been distroyed, they call it de schooling! Excellent book Home Educating Our Autistic Spectrum Child Terri Dowty and Kitt Cowlishaw. Good read! Enjoy being with her and learning together.

Hi, Its Called EOTAS Educating other that at school. You are entitled to tutoring for your child by the LEA provided by them for a number of hours a week. They have to be registered with a school but do not have to be attending. It is so the tutors can get the work and lesson plans for your kid so they keep up. Your kid should meet the criteria if they are not home educated. The Lea do not want people to know about EOTAS because it is expensive for them. CAHMs can do a referral on Emotional grounds to access this. Also the school could have done it for you, but are closing ranks. The kid needs to not have been in education for at least 14 days full time. If you are serious about home educating think long and hard, home educating it is a really big thing to take on. I saw it as my only option when my kid had a mental and physical breakdown due to the lack of recognition and support for my 12 year old with AS Dyspraxia and Dyslexia. Once you de register your kid it is your responsibility and not the Lea, they will not give you help or funding for anything. Good luck any other help give me a shout you are not alone

Hi, been there with the refusal to asses due to the negligence of the school. My Parental request was turned down first time, need 3 IEP's did not have 1 even though kid was on Action Plus. They did not read through the 5 professional reports regarding my sons AS, and Dyspraxia. They then requested the CAF ( common assessment framework) be filled out took a month of hard work from me but made sure that everything was included that was in the reports. Now going through the assessment, going through I mean it goes back to panel beginning of March to decide on the statement as all reports and evidence will be in, all the work had been done prior to the request apart from the Ed Psych. Don't loose hope the school will keep putting you off, but you know your kid better than anyone. It is there job to make things as difficult as possible for you to make you give up. Go to your G.P insist on a referral to CAHMs to see a psychiatrist/Psychologist. Unfortunately the Pead's are not always the most helpful lot. Mine said that my son was too old to see them at 9, idiot! Also get into see a pead O.T to get some assessment fine and gross motor. The more information you can get to support yourself and your request the better chance you have. What can I say about SENCo's well mine was in denial about his disability as he was "Accademic" hate that blasted word did not matter he broke down mentally and physically and we took him out of Mainstream Ed been home educating him since Oct last year. You can do this do not give up, I know it seems so overwhelming but at the end of the day who will fight for our kids if we don't. Take care.

Hi Caroline, I too live in Northumberland(North) and have a 12 year old who was in the middle school system until 3 weeks ago, he as AS and Dyspraxia. Northumberland are one of the areas piloting the CAF. I attended one of these meetings before I had to de register. In my case it was a done deal. Me being there was an after thought. They will be more concerned about his academic attainment than his mental health. I had CAHMS there to help me, but none of the professionals involved seemed to appreciate the severity of how things had become for my son, and his refusal to return to school. Even after putting my case backed up by CAHMS all that they were concerned about was that he returned to school asap. You can request an assessment be done by Northumberland. It will be a parental request. School is going to probably keep saying that your kid has no problems as he is academic, I so hate that word. They will also have very little evidence in report form if any, and will try to put you off, they did that with me for over 2 years until I finally requested it myself I have just found out that County will not assess and I am about to start the work for SEN tribunal. My kid so wants to go to a special school with other kids like him as do we. I keep on telling people that I would rather have a happy child than an academic child any day. With statements it all boils down to money I am afraid, it costs £3000 for a lea to do the assessment, do not let that put you off you look out for your kids needs, if you want to request one then go for it. Northumberland in my opinion are terrible!
