  1. Hooray!! Just found out we've been awarded DLA. Low mobility and high care, on the first time of asking!! And they're back dating it to 10th sept. That's £1000 in the bank before xmas. I'm so relieved, it's fixed till march 2013. This year has been so bad, next year is looking a lot better already. Plus had a meeting with my son's SENCO yesterday after his suspension for hugging the head teacher and she's on board for getting him assessed for a statement etc. It's so nice to know i'm not going to have to fight the school all the way!!
  2. hi, today my son's school rang to say he was in the medical room saying he couldn't see anything. This has happened before, but only after an incident involving his eyes ie, he poked himself in the eye or looked into the sun. I assumed he was doing his usual overreacting. This incident didn't involve his eyes but a boy did punch him in the arm. He said as he walked away his eyes went all fuzzy and he couldn't see anything? I'll probably go get a referal to see an optometrist just to be safe, but was wondering if anyone has had any problems like this? He also sometimes complains he can't see the board in school, but the teacher said she believed it was a delay/avoidance ploy when he doesn't think he can complete the task given. This is the problem that I struggle with most when dealing with my gorgeous boy. How do you decide what may be a diagnosable problem ie hearing/vision and what is a stress response? My husband often says 'just because he has asperger's, doesn't mean he has anything else wrong' and I say, 'but what if he does?' I'd rather know than not, but I worry I look like a neurotic mother to my GP!!!

    special school?

I need help!! I have been becoming more and more unhappy with my son's middle school over the past year and a half. He was diagnosed with ASD just before he moved up to middle school. He is slightly behind in his academic levels, but is hitting all targets set by the school. It is his emotional and social development which is worrying me. He is constantly on behaviour report or in detention, they don't seem to take his Aspergers into account at all. Today he has been excluded because he hugged the headteacher (female). He approched her from behind and hugged her round the waist tightly and wouldn't let go. She's calling it an assault and threatening to permanently expel him. How would i go about getting him moved to a special needs school where his individual needs can be met? I have no idea where to start.
  4. My son has always got up in the night to go to the loo (and for this i am eternally grateful) and leaves the hall and bathroom light on because he doesn't like the dark. Recently however he has taken to going all round the house turning all of the lights on, up stairs and down, last night he even went into his sisters room and turned her light on (not good for my electricity bill). He never remembers this in the morning, but i'm worried that it is causing him to be unsettled at school. He has always had problems getting to sleep, but once he's gone he's dead to the world for as long as you let him sleep. But since he has started this sleep walking he seems to be spontaiously waking up earlier, causing him to be grumpy especially in the afternoons. Does sleep medication help with sleepwalking? Or should i just put a lock on this door?!!! marie

    DLA

I want a general view from you guys, is it worth applyig for DLA? My son was diagnosed with AS a year ago, I was told at the time we qualified for DLA but I assumed, as my husband is on a decent salary, we would only get a small amount and so I didn't look into it. I recently found out that DLA is not means tested so it doesn't matter what we earn. I looked at the form and it seems rather complicated . So what I'm basically asking is how much are we likely to get, worst case, and is it worth me battling my way through this form? marie
