  1. Hi there Thanks ever so much for your replies - they're really helpful. All the schools have been sent the paperwork and reports prepared by professionals - there's stacks of information. I haven't provided any independent information although I did a very full report on my own views to add to the assessment. Sally the questions you've listed are great - I hadn't thought of half of these and will take a list of questions to ask. I was so lost and didn't know where to start but will use your list as a very good starting point and add to it. It's so stressful - I feel so grateful to tap into other people's experiences and advice on this site x
  2. Hi all The LEA have agreed to fund an independent school for my 14 year old son who has been out of mainstream education for 18 months - he was diagnosed with Aspergers in June 2010. There's a choice of 5 schools from outside the county and arrangements are now underway for me to visit the schools in the first instance. 1 of the schools sent an OT and teacher to meet my son yesterday in his current education provision, another school are visiting him next week. It has been a hard fight for my son to receive an education - his proposed statement was issued in February but the final statement hasn't been issued yet as they haven't got a school to name (I've challenged the lea about this and threatened to go to the local govt ombudsman - I won't go into that here!). I have finally got to the stage which I was aiming for but now I feel lost - I'm scared and I don't know what I need to consider in choosing a school, also I don't know what questions to ask. I've looked the schools up on the net but I feel clueless - how do I know they will suit my son? Also there's the question of residential v travelling to school - some of the schools will mean an hours travelling each way whilst others would only be viable if he boards. I'd appreciate if members on here could give me some advice - I feel so lost My son is aware that there is a boarding option and whilst he was initially surprised at this (to say the least) he's open to this. I just want the best for him. thanks
  3. I found this very helpful when I applied for DLA for my son: http://www.cafamily.org.uk/pdfs/DLA_factsheet.pdf When I did the personal statement at the end of the form I practically wrote an essay giving examples of my sons behaviour, eg a trip to the zoo when he had a massive meltdown, trips to the supermarket and his inability to cope in there with the lights etc, I said all his behaviour was not usual for a 13 year old and gave concrete examples of day to day situations.
  4. That sounds very positive Justine - I've got my fingers crossed for you that it goes through smoothly and he starts school soon x
  5. Hi My son has his own alphasmart - it's basically a lightweight portable word processor. A family member bought it for him as it was recommended by the school - I think they had very few available and they were all in use. They appear to be a good tool for young people who have difficulties with writing (my son has dyspraxia and fine motor co-ordination difficulties). The young person saves their work on the alphasmart and prints it off later - the school my son attended made facilities available every day so he could do this. Unfortunately, my son picked most of the function keys off the keyboard (he has a fixation with plastic) and has organisational difficulties, so whilst he had the tools to help him he would forget to take his alphasmart into school, not charge it up, and not print off any work. He has aspergers and has difficulties with organisation generally. I do know, however, that other young people used the alphasmart successfully in school.
  6. Hi, Thanks everyone - my head's in bits, I'm just gathering information at the moment waiting for the statement to be issued. It helps to know there's others to offer advice and support Hi Justine - yes, we're FB friends I've been reading your posts with interest, I know you've had a tough time trying to get your kids education sorted. Are you any further forward? I think you're right what you say about finding provision out of county - I think it'll be a hard time ahead so I'll be posting on here when I need guidance (or generally to rant lol). x
  7. Hi I'm currently looking for suitable education provision for my 13 year old son Charlie, he's a very bright, clever young man so I'm looking for somewhere which can help him achieve his academic potential in addition to helping him with his social communication difficulties. He was diagnosed with asperger's syndrome last year, his proposed statement is due in 2 weeks - I'm anticipating his primary need will be BES (he has emotional difficulties - CAMHS are currently involved following a period of depression). He's also dyspraxic and slightly dyslexic- he has been out of mainstream school for over a year - he currently only receives 4 hours education per week via a home tuition service. It's acknowledged by staff at the home tuitions service and his current school SENCO that Charlie is not suitable for mainstream school - also that he is academically able. We live in Buckinghamshire, the only special schools here seem to be geared towards young people with challenging behaviour or for young people with more severe learning difficulties, neither of which are suited to his needs. It's been suggested that the most appropriate provision would possibly be a residential school - I'm just starting to look around to see what's available and would appreciate any advice or information on this. Also for any information regarding special schools in our neighbouring counties - Beds, Berks, Herts, Oxfordshire, Milton Keynes. Thanks xx
