  2. Hi there, I was wondering, does anyone know of any services of practical/emotional support that the Government runs to help families with ASD? I know there are plenty offered by the NAS such as earlybird, help! and befriending, but wondered if the Government fully fund, or help to fund, any service's like these? Is anyone aware of any? Thanks, SkyBlue

Yeah I can imagine finding the time must be difficult for you. I know our local community centre used to run classes that involved the kids and dogs getting to know one another - it was very gentle and it was a fun thing for the whole family to do together. I know you said your ASD son was nervous of the dog, but maybe something like this would be beneficial? I guess it depends on your little lads boundaries - no point in scaring him or anything as it'll only make the situation ten times more stressful anyway!
  4. Ah never mind hey - its the fun of watching it isnt it......! (She says counting her cash and grinning like the cheshire cat!!)

We had a simliar problem with our Golden Retriever. She was a flippin nutter from the moment we got her up until her 5th or so bday. She wasnt badly tempered at all, just extemely highly strung - we used to have a daily what we called 'mad hour' where she would run around the garden etc nonestop until she tired herself out. She ate her way through the garden fence and used to be in the neighbours garden, and as they didnt have gates, she'd end up running around the road we live on. The only thing that worked in calming her down was taking her to obedience classes - they werent very expensive but it seemed to help. I think she used to run away because she'd get bored, whereas as she could socialise with other dogs here, it really made a difference. I don't know whether this would help with your mutt, but it might be worth a try. As i say it wasnt expensive and was well worth the money it did cost. She's now a dosile old lady....which is sad, so i wish we had the nutter back! Hope that helps, Niki
  7. Lauren, to be perfectly honest it sounds as if these people know exactly what they're doing and are completely using you purely to look after their kids when they have noone else to turn to. They also seem to totally misunderstand AS - judging from the comments about your son 'playing on his AS'. I'm sorry but that sort of remark doesn't come from someone who is uninformed, but rather from someone who is ignorant and spiteful. I know I have ony been a member here a short while, but I have spent a lot of time on here in the few days I have been a member, and you seem like a very kind, helpful person. In my opinion, these people are taking advantage of your good nature. I respect you for wanting to be mature about it in inviting them over, but I know I personally, would need to attempt to resolve the matter if a true friendship was ever to be forged. I think once these people come into your home, you will actually feel quite a lot of anger and resentment towards them. So my reaction would be to be extremely welcoming and kind, but to get my points across about what upset you. I mean you never know they may really respect your honesty and apologise - i hope this is the case, but from what you've said about them i'd be surprised! At the end of the day, do you and your son need friends like that? Do you need people to come into your home who you cannot be honest with? Do you need friends who seem to have an uleria motive behind your friendship (in the form of an unpaid babysitter)? Whatever you decide to do, I hope it works out well for you and William. Take care, and remember just do what you feel is best for you and your little boy Hope that made some sense!! Niki
  8. Dispicable. Just what sort of a society do we live in?!

  10. Happy Birthday! Hope you have a great day!
  11. Yeah i know what you mean - i've spent loads on tickets lately. Got England v Jamaica tickets midweek, got Oasis tickets in Feb that i'm still broke from, saw Ordinary Boys tickets the other night and I want to get Jimmy Carr and Al Murray tickets later this month too.......... Madonna would be amazing to see live, i'm jealous! Hope you and your sister have a fantastic time! bet Little Britain will be great too - i was going to get tickets for them but got exams when they're on near to me
  12. Thanks everyone - i thought it was worth sharing because I am sure amny of you have had similar feelings regarding your children. It must be upsetting as a parent to think that your beautiful children will never experience at first hand the joy that you yourselves have experienced through having them. It does go to show that anything is possible and that ASD children, just like any others, are full of surprises in every form! I wish you and all your little ones all the best <'> Niki editted to remove typo's!
  13. What age children are the rides aimed at would you say? I want to take my niece and nephew for a day out somewhere but their ages are very far apart - one is 6 the other is mid-late teens! Do you think there would be anything to occupy the older one? Thanks Niki
  14. Yeah i've had a little flutter - who you gone for? I'm Hedgehunter and Innox both e/w, here's to hoping they both come placed!! Good luck to you too!
  15. I didnt pass mine until the 2nd time i took it - 1st time i failed for pulling out on a roundabout in a 'hesitant manner'! :S 2nd time i took my test i had a stand up argument with the examiner - i don't know what came over me i'm usually so placcid, i think nerves got the better of me!! Glad you're feeling so positive about your 1st lesson, it is great to be confident when driving, as soon as i stopped being so nervous behind the wheel it all clicked into place
