  1. Hi all, My 9 year old son has been recently been diagnosed with high functioning autism. I have been reading up a lot on this since and am not 100% sure this is the correct diagnosis. The clinical psychologist was not sure if he should diagnose it but decided to go ahead after speaking with the speech therapist. My son saw the speech therapist for 40 mins on his own and the clinical psychologist observed them for 20 mins. This was their only interaction with him. The reason we got him assessed is because since starting primary school he has been having a few issues controlling his emotions (gets a bit upset when things don't go his way, not a tantrum but an angry face or will put his head down on the table when upset) and making friends. At the moment he has no friends in school and goes around the yard by himself. He has no issues with routines, or repetitive behaviour, no one special interest, he understands sarcasm, humour, irony. He doesnt talk out of turn and seems to understand others feelings and social cues. Some times I think he is too aware. He understands what is appropriate to say to people but I just feel like there is something that blocks him from interacting with people. He has very low confidence and I think he feels like no one is interested in what he has to say. He used to have a friend he played with at home and who is also in his class but she has other friends in the class this year and they no longer interact. I dont think anything happened, I think he just feels abandoned. We had absolutely no issues with him up to primary school, he got on really well in preschool. He was a very content baby and toddler and reached all his milestones early or on time. Has a great imagination and loved creative play. The first half of primary school went fine but something changed in the second half. As the years have gone on he has become more withdrawn and just cant be bothered sometimes. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone diagnosed with high functioning autism? I want to make sure this is the correct diagnosis before going any further. I feel like it might be something else but I am also aware that autism is a spectrum and symptoms are varied. Thank you.
