  1. HI helen havent been on for a while but i can really feel your pain. there are a few "couple" counsellors out there who specialise in aspergers. i know of one in coventry called maxine aston (who i found a bit too blunt for me but i dont think i was ready at that point) and another but i cant remember where. Not saying that they are the answer but perhaps someone like them could help both individually and jointly so that you get the support you need and perhaps your other half may be able to talk his thoughts to someone else. Good luck and lots of hugs.Lxx
  2. Referee is a perfect discription for me with my 6 year old ASD and ? 4 yr NT boys. 4 yr old winds big bro up constantly as has worked out that negative behaviour like his brothers gets more attention which is driving my husband and i nuts at the moment. sometimes worry that 4 year old is showing ASD signs but then think that he is copying alot of his big bros behaviour. Let round 2 begin! L
  3. Dear Baddad Have you put together some sort of chart/spread sheet looking at the contents of the fish oil supplements that you have looked into? Regards L
  4. Re enzyme supplements really interested in trying these but dont know where to start ie which ones would be best for my six year old. is there one type that easy to obtain that most people are using? Going to see GP to discuss all this including sunderland urinalysis and sensory/ auditory integration therapy. Is their threads elsewhwere on this site for both the enzymes and the integration therapy? Lxx
  5. Another great book which you can dip in and out of is the OASIS GUIDE to asperger's syndrome by Bashe and Kirby just updated midddle of last year. Tony Attwood was also involved and it is based on the input from the american website. I have found it wonderful. My six year old sounds similar to yours as in "mildly" but find new challenges are always happening and bewteen this website and the above book my sanity is still a little tact. Lxx
  6. M needs to play with the electronic door pads, cant wait to get through the revolving doors at sainsbugs to the extent that he normally stops the door going round! Then we have the additional problem of him watching himself on the security camera ( loveswatching himself as mentioned previously) oh and needs to be first ( as for everything) to go thru the door. He also needs to ring the door bell even he knows no-ones home. AND he needs to slam the door- cant close any door gently. Thought this was him just being awkward whoops sorry M! L
  7. Hi there has anyone tried letting their kid use chewing gum? M aged 6 chews his sleeve all the time but without seeing the chewy tube not sure how discrete or manky he would get one of these. I am aAbit worried about letting him try chewing gum as not sure if this would look worse? Any thoughts guys? It also seems that alot of our kids need extra oral stimulation to releive stress/anxiety. Has their been a poll on this? Lxxx
  8. Hi Carole Happy new year. Haven't been onto the forum for a while. Really interested in your chemical and environmental factor data. Any trends or hotspots noticed yet? Also any thoughts about the dutch chap who thinks that he has found an complementary health "cure" to help boost the immune system? L
  9. Thanks guys Are there any menu/cook books on this stuff especially for kids?
  10. Dear Amanda How did you get on with the social stories? Bought the book a couple of months ago and found it really useful but very time consuming to practise all the time. Still using it though to try and explaing things if i cant get something through to M Regards L
  11. Hi guys Not been online for a while but nice to come back! Not sure if this is the correct thread or not but has anyone seen in the newspapers over the past week or so articles relating to an "enzyme test" and antioxidants? Cant seem to trace what all this is about other than a "new test on an enzyme that those on the spectrum may be difficient in relating auto immune response and can be helped with anti-oxidants. Re diet- does anyone know of someone in the kent surrey sussex/ london area who specialises on the gluten free diet and asd. Small group of mums in sussex(4) are really interested in starting the diet on our kids but looking for someone to help us. One mum got an appointment with dietician but apparantly wasn't very knowledgable about ASD kids, local HV says that she doesnot know of any local GPs who may be able to help but let her know if we find one! Your input would be invaluable. Also on a similar thread Really curious abouts links with pollution/ auto-immune response. Does anyone know of any data about "hotspots" of ASD eg in heavily industrialised areas? Both myself and my husband both come from places of heavy industry and live near an airport and dont know if this links into our son being on the spectrum? M also has mild eczema and hayfever ( also auto-immune response problems as does my husband) Does anyone elses ASD kids have similar hayfever/eczema problems and live or been brought up in highly industrialised areas? Tried the NAS web page on research but was too high brow for me to comprehend. Loads of questions to ask you all but my mind is "swimming" thinking about all this over the past couple of days regards L
  12. M is the same. Even at bed time he wants a little bed time snack. Fortunately he is happy to trough on alot of healthy foods and I have a strict 12md rule for anything sweet. Forunately he's not overweight but I am conscious that he eats so much more than his NT bro!
  13. Hi Guys Wouldn't it be great if there was a joint conference. One for parents/those with aspergers and one for professionals with a cross over somewhere in the middle- now that would tryuely be a meeting of minds and expertise! I'm sorry if i sound frustrated Neotic but as both a parent and someone in the health care profession ( but not involved with AS in a professional capacity) I agree with Kathryn that I would love to know more about all the theoretical aspects to help me truely understand. Seeing and hearing experts helps me learn much quicker than any book. Its saves trying to find the answer all by myself when others already have the answer and can share their expertise there and then! Parents can also help the pros get it right too as Tony Attwood says somewher in his books that its is those with or living with AS that are experts because the live and breathe it 24/7. The pros research also helps us validate what we know to be right but cant proove it And yes it would be fantastic if the NAS could donate some tickets to families or forums like this. Kris Would you consider asking the NAS if they would offer a couple of tickets to KRISM to let somone feed back to the forum or perhaps we could ask our local support groups( although budget constraints will be much tighter than National budget? Just a thought L
  14. PS the feeling that we are not important enough came from the fact that after 2 calls they (the conference team) have not called back. L
  15. Hi Neotic Sorry if i upset you in any way. As you are aware from the nature of the majority of the postings on here from parents- we have no option but to find out as much as Health care professionals (HCP) / Education authorities (EA) to feed back and often neccessarily question/challenge local health care professionals who may not be as clued up on ASD as we (parents and children alike) would wish them to be. If two parents go together the price seems incredibly high and the majority of "professional" delegates will have their places paid by or subsidised by their employers training budget. Parents will most likely have to find the money themselves. So yes as a professional conference is concerned the price is vey fair but for parents who have to be their childs advocate then I still think that the cost is too high! You can see from this forum many parents are either as clued up on ASD as HCP/(EA) or even more than some which is unfair but a fact we have to deal with. Without this knowledge many of our children ( and us) with not get their needs met Best wishes L
