  1. Happy Birthday from me too! Hope the Birthday boy has a lovely evening also xx
  2. My ds was diagnosed with moderate autism this year. He is nearly 5. I feel like the world's worst mum because now his 'issues' have been pointed out to me they are blindingly obvious! I too get very disheartened when I read 'I've always known there was something wrong with my child'. How do people know...I hadn't got a clue!

    Ouch :(

Ouch that sounded painful! I am currently hobbling around like an old man as I went to pick my 2 yr old up and felt something go twang in my back. The good news is it only hurts when I move! Hope you feel better soon otherwise you might need a trip to outpatients K x
  5. Thank you all for taking the time to reply My ds is nearly 5. I guess what I was trying to ascertain was - is it normal for someone to have such the amount of speech with moderate autism? My ds also answers questions with phrases / paragraphs from film / TV. I really wish I had his memory! It is really comforting to read that age makes a big difference to their communicative ability. I shall try hard not to look too far ahead! K
  6. Hello, Struggling a bit at the mo. I have lurked around this forum for quite a while. A month ago my ds was dx with moderate autism. To say I am devastated would be an understatement. I was expecting HFA at the very worst. Anyway I digress - my ds sings an awful lot and has a huge range of songs of which he is generally word perfect. However when he talks to you there are generally 4 scenarios 1) he speaks sense 2) he answers the question with an inappropriate answer 3) he talks complete rubbish 4) he completely ignores me. More often than not I have to repeat things 6 times before I get a response. I just don't understand why there are such wide ranging responses. It is almost like some days he is 'with us' and other days he isn't on the same planet. SALT said that his speech and language has a 16 month delay. He also has perfect hearing. Is this typical from a child with moderate autism? I am still clutching at straws it will be something he grows out of. K
  7. Hello my son is a similar age to your son. He will be 5 in May My son sings frequently throughout the day, if he is not singing then he is shaking things or banging things together. He also has vocal clicking. He obviously get a lot of pleasure from auditory inputs. What has been a help to me is that I have zoned the house into quiet and 'loud' areas. If he feels the need to have a good sing song session etc then he knows that he has to go to a noisy area to do so. It is not perfect system by any means, but it does make me feel like I have some control. Fortunately he has embraced this quite well to the point of telling people to quieten down as they are in a quiet room. I hope you find a strategy that will work for both of you! K.

    Goodbye

Amanda, I am so sorry to hear your tragic news. Sending you and your family lots of love. Kat xxx
  9. Ooh that is the first bit of hope I've had that my ds may stop singing so much. How old was your dd when she disliked singing (and please don't tell me aged 23 ) Interestingly we went to a friends house today, and he managed 1hr without singing at all , although he did play on her drum set instead!
  10. Many thanks for taking the time to reply - it was greatly appreciated! No magical cure then. I thought there might be some kind of behaviour modification that I could try. I have also got a 2 yr old daughter that is also beginning to copy her brother and they try and outdo each other in the loud volume singing stakes. Oh joy, my very own ready made choir........... K x
  11. Hello, My son is 4yrs and 5 months, he is currently being assessed for social, language difficulties. His paed has said that dx is pointing towards ASD. My son sings constantly throughout the day often at high volume. He has a song for every occasion. Has anyone got any suggestions on how I can get him to sing less often. My tolerance level is getting less by the day. Many thanks xx
