  1. Hi there We're setting up an Eco-wellbeing and Activity break for adults with high functioning Autism and Asperger's in Cornwall, England and wondered if anyone who has high functioning Autism or Asperger's could help us out by completing a simple questionnaire on how you like spending your holidays? It would really help us to get your opinion and ensure we do things right. If you're interested in helping, can you please email us at coolofthewildretreat@gmail.com Many thanks! Natalie and Geoff
  2. I am looking to find out how the process of transitioning from child services to adult services actually works for people who have an Autistic Spectrum Condition. Are there any pro’s and con’s? Are there any difficulties with transitioning? Including individual and systemic factors. Is this a straight forward process? Who is responsible for the transition? Where do you find out how to do this? Who gives you the information? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

  4. I am a 22-year old female aspie still living at home, on disability, not in college despite being high functioning. I have been trying to be independent by getting my own credit card, phone plan, things like that. I've recently signed up for (and successfully attended once so far without quitting-yay me!) an acting class in a large city an hour away from home. I like cities, and I would really like to find a job soon and be able to go to work and to my class, etc, using Uber, be able to use public transport to meet with friends or coworkers on my own, etc. I have a hard time remembering things, however. I also tend to procrastinate a bit. I'm anxious and depressed and recently went off medication because it was causing serious health issues and not working well. I am supposed to be meditating, keeping a journal, and blocking off time for my creative projects. I am supposed to be taking time reading and watching things other than those that pertain to my special interests, or stimming, (i.e. venturing out.) I did well at my class and was surprised that I didn't feel the need to stim because I wasn't bored. I keep thinking things like, "I'm going to meditate today" or "I'm going to take an hour to write my story" or "I'm going to read a fanfic that isn't about my special interest show or "I'm going to stop stimming at this time." But I will always manage to get lost stimming for hours on end and looking at/reading about the special interests (The X-Files, bras, politics/activism, medicine, sexual techniques) for hours. I will think like, "Well I know 6.5 hours of sleep makes me feel more agreeable. I'm going to go to bed at 12AM, wake up at 6:30." But then I will end up falling asleep at 7PM or not until 4AM, randomly waking up at 4:30 AM or not until 1PM. I know I need a schedule/alarm/whatever, but I need a very specific one. One that will let me type in a message and say it out loud when it goes off, with directions. like this: "Time to wake up" "It's been x days since you last did laundry." "You should eat soon." "Time to stim for x amount of time" "It's 65 degrees today, dress accordingly." "It is your mother's birthday in a week, get her something." "Almost time for your period, make sure you have tampons." You have a class/appointment at x time in x city. Here is how you will get there, there's x amount of traffic, this is the weather in that location." "Your credit card payment of $150 is due on x day. You need to deposit x amount by then. Remember to get checks and stamps." "You haven't pooped in x days, should you take something for that?" ""You haven't worked on the screenplay in 2 weeks, try for an hour at 5PM." "Write down how you feel in the journal, meditate/exercise/whatever for x amount of time." Is there an app that would do this at all. Or a series of them. I have iPhone (6s) so it would have to be compatible.
  5. not posted in here forever so sorry that its about something like this but really could do with some urgent help my aspergers son has a daughter who is nearly 2, he is not with her mother but has been having contact with her 3 days a week since she was born. today out of the blue social sevices turned up and said there is a problem with him seeing his son because of his disability, apparently the mother has suddenly decided she thinks he is a danger and has told these social workers a load of twaddle about how his disability affects him and now they need to assess him and his girlfriend who is also his carer. apparently she has a problem because she says because he is a goth he dresses his daughter in black all the time and refuses to let her wear pink (he doesnt he doesnt even have any black clothes for her and the only reason he doesnt have pink for her is ALL the clothes her mother has for her are pink) she has a problem because apparently he always removes her bobbles which he doesnt his daughter tends to pull them out and he doesnt put them back in she is also saying she has a problem because he doesnt like to go out on his own which he doesnt he does have a problem with crowds of people and things but at the end of the day thats why hs girlfriend is his carer and she is always there. apparently these are ALL legitamate concerns for him not having contact with his daughter which apart from the going out one i cant really see what the problem is. the social worker also said to him in her experience people with disabilitys dont generally make good parents!!! can she really say this??? i guess what im asking is how much can the social services use his disablity against him, especially since this one seems to have a pre concived idea of his ability to manage, and what can we do to help his case? trace x

  8. Hi I have joined up as I need a bit of help with the assessment process for my brother. He's 27 and until recently was living independently but has just moved back in with my mother as he wasn't coping. We all realised he may have Aspergers about 2 years ago. This is where we are so far. We went to the GP who referred us for an initial assessment with a psychiatrist. They have referred him for a full assessment in London. However we have now waited a year and heard nothing. What do you recommend we do at this point? He is struggling and we think his support allowance may stop soon as the doctor is being awkward. My mum can't keep him at hers for long as it's a one bed flat. Are there any other living arrangements we could consider? We are in Kent. Thank you in advance Sarah Broadstairs, Kent
  9. Hi! I am Cath and have a 7 year old daughter who was diagnosed with Aspergers and ADD, just before Christmas. My daughter's behaviour seems to be getting worse, is this 'normal' or do I need to seek extra help? Her mood swings are getting really bad (mainly at home rather than at school, I think); I will tell her something and she will call me a liar, a few moments later! She seems to be walking on her tip toes more and more; She is waking earlier and earlier - The paediatric Consultant finally gave her a script for Melatonin, - after I asked the GP if there was anything he could do, and he consulted her. Her 'friendships' at school are getting worse, due to her tempers and always wanting to control things (she will play a game so long as it is by her rules, she will have a meltdown if she loses or is not picked first) I have just had her off school for a week with badly swollen glands and can't wait for her to go back to school, as I feel so stressed! (Her father does not help much and tends to leave it all to me!) I have my own medical issues, which cause me to have fatigue, forget things easily suffer chronic pain etc etc etc. I realise that this might all seem worse because I have had her at home for the past week, but any help/advice would be very welcome. Although the school she attends is very small and the SEN is also the head teacher and has sent her class teacher on specialist 1 day Aspergers awareness sessions, and her class teacher states that he is very Aspergers aware, I feel that from things he has told me, he does not differentiate between problems that girls with Aspergers have and how boys with Aspergers present. My daughter is on the 'gifted and talented' list at school, though seems to be doing nothing different from the rest of her class. It was me that instigated that she be assessed for Aspergers, via a GP at our surgery, and he referred us to the consultant who then instigated the other professional assessments in order to get a diagnosis (though in her diagnosis letter, she did not actually say that she had Aspergers, but that my daughter met the criteria for Aspergers and ADD.) Please, I am becoming more and more overwhelmed by the situation, and need some help/support. Thank you for your time. Cath
  10. Hello I did a presentation at an Aspergers group this weekend. Here is a video of a portion of the presentation, and a bit from the question and answer at the end: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZtoXj7onDo&feature=c4-overview&list=UU2OdMVzzL6SaOKyP0dTcllQ The whole talk has been split up into articles which I have added to my site here, if you want to see them: http://www.willowhop...d-the-aspergers http://www.willowhop...rs-relationship http://www.willowhop...pport-in-school Thanks
  11. Hi people, Have you had difficulty in the past few years getting assessment; help; counselling, or anything ASD related, in the Suffolk, and especially Bury St Edmunds area? Do you think the area lacks ASD resources? If so, I really need your help. I’m a professional counsellor/psychotherapist in private practice with over 25 years’ experience. I work mainly from The Human Givens perspective (Look up caetextia!) and am also certified to use the 3Di assessment tool in clinic. Approximately half of my time is spent working with ASD related cases. I am in the process of setting up a new clinic near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. In order to do this I have to apply to the local planning authority for change of use of the existing building to use it as a clinic. I approached a couple of the better-known ASD charities, and the Local Authority ASD-services to ask them for some written support to use in my application to the St Edmundsbury planning office: specifically to show that there was a need for a wider choice of resources for all people affected by ASD and related issues (meaning partners/parents/children as well as those directly on the spectrum) in the Bury/Suffolk area. To my astonishment, I was told that that there was no need for private clinics because all ASD in the area was completely covered; that nobody had to wait unduly for assessment; that the NHS, CAMHS, SENCO, dealt with it all; etc., etc. My reaction? Probably the same as yours: Shock and disbelief: then laughter. I deal daily with people who tell me the exact opposite! So please, if you’ve suffered delays, setbacks, refusal to assess; whatever, then this is your opportunity to let the Local Authority (and, sadly/surprisingly, those charities) know the reality. It would really help our case if you could give a brief outline of what the issues were/are. Feel free to PM me if you prefer. There is a degree of urgency here. Thanks very much for taking the time to read this. My kindest regards to you all in your endeavours. Bluebottle, D.Hyp., HG.Dip.P., MA(PsychT).
  12. I don't know if this is gonna sound silly or if anyone else has to deal with this, but basically I am really struggling, I am 28 years old and have three kids and the problem is I am in this routine of constantly going to my mums house when I should be at home cleaning and just generally getting on doing things grown ups do but the truth is I would rather be reading or on the computer at my mums. I have to come to realise that my mum and my parents house is a security blanket that I keep going back to and its an incredibly unhealthy habit and is definitely driving my husband mental. I just feel like I really struggle with all the demands of being an adult, like when my husband talks to me about work sometimes I just sit there waiting for an oppurtunity to walk awake cause it is stressing me out. I am also really bad at eating a healthy diet and exercising, I try to be good and it lasts for a week at most then I am back to my old faithful routine. There is other stuff as well, I am not formally diagnosed, hoping to look into this soon but after finding out my daughter is probably on the spectrum and doing a lot of research I am almost 99% sure I have aspergers. Any advice would be gratefully received. xx
  13. I have Asperger's Syndrome and I find it really hard to keep contact with a lot of the relationships that I form. However, this one girl (who I am madly in love with) says she loves me and that she wants to have a future with me but sometimes gets these random feelings of what she calls 'emptiness' and I can't help but want to help her. She takes Dialectical Behavioral Therapy but I love her so much and will do anything for her. Unfortunately, this relationship is long distance and I can't be there for her all the time YET; but am moving to University very near her and will see her every week! Can anyone offer me some advice? Thank you!
  14. Hello everyone, For those of you who read my last post, and to those who responded, I can tell you that I'm not too far off launching a new website for the autism community. I'm very excited, but have no clue if anyone else will be... The site will enable users to communicate 'what matters most' to them when using any type of service, whether it be schools, diagnostic services, supported living services, hairdressers, employers etc... you get the picture. The outcome of collecting this information will aim to inform a wide range of service providers what they can do to be more 'autism friendly' (for want of a better expression). The hope is that services will then register on the site and open themselves up to be rated against the autism community's 'what matters most' (quality criteria). A bit like Trip Adviser where users can search for services in their area - but more personalised quality criteria. I want to create a low budget (as it's all I can afford!) video for the homepage that explains the site's purpose and basic functions. I really need help with this so people will be drawn to the site. Here is an outline of my request: What would be a good example for the video storyboard? In other words, what would be a typical service experience that you could provide some 'what matters most' criteria for easily e.g. pubs, and 'what matters most' criteria could be having a quiet area and visual menus for food? Other suggestions for any other type of service would be gratefully received. I'm looking forward to hearing from anyone! Thank you for reading this. Gary
