  1. Hi everyone! For my dissertation, I am conducting surveys about the effect of friendship quality on mental health in children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. If you have a child age 4-13 with a diagnosis of Autism, I invite you to complete my survey, which will take only 20 minutes! Findings could lead to a greater understanding of the effect of friendship quality on mental health in autistic children. Please email me at pt00254@surrey.ac.uk if you have any questions. 2. Hello, I have just joined the forum! A little about me, I am a mum to a 16 year old girl, who has ASD (originally diagnosed with Aspergers). We had the diagnosis about 5 years ago. I'm currently finishing my MSc in Organisational Psychology with the University of London, my research is on Young Adults with ASD in the Workplace, focussing on how to better prepare them for work and how to support them in the workplace. I'd be interested to chat with other parents and professionals supporting individuals with ASD about their experience. I'm happy to discuss further my research, if anyone is interested to have a chat with me. Please contact me on enunes04@mail.bbk.ac.uk. Have a lovely day, Evie
  3. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED: -Aged 11-16 years -Children with an Autism Spectrum Diagnosis -Mainstream school AIM: To investigate the connection between the friendships of children diagnosed with ASD and their emotional wellbeing within a mainstream school environment. WHY THIS RESEARCH? As persistent impairments in social interaction and communication are central to a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), many children with ASD experience difficulties in developing friendships and relationships with their peer group. This may place them at a higher risk of social isolation and loneliness which may ultimately lead to the development of mental health problems. Therefore, the impact of friendships is of significant concern to the success of a child’s education. Your participation will be crucial to help further this research. WHO TAKES PART? Children aged 12-16 years WITH (and WITHOUT) an ASD diagnosis and their parents. This research project has been approved by the University of Bath Ethics Committee. Information provided will be kept anonymous and confidential. At no point will the children’s full names or identity be disclosed. HOW TO TAKE PART? The children and their parents will be asked to complete 3 questionnaires each to measure friendships and emotional wellbeing. The study will then compare child and parent perspectives. These questionnaires are online should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. 10. Hi there, I’m currently waiting for an ASD diagnosis on the NHS. I’m 28 and living with my parents living off savings as I’m unemployed and neither of my parents work and live off pensions. My whole life has been pretty joyless and unsuccessful so far. In 2011 I was assessed with Weschler Adult Intelligence Scales and found to have: * Verbal Comprehension: 96th centile * Processing Speed: 4th centile, yes, 4th * Perceptual Reasoning: 77th centile In the US the have this term for people like me 2e, which stands for twice exceptional meaning presence of marked strengths as well as disabilities. I’m not sure I really like the term though because I don’t feel like there’s anything all that great about being the way I am: just very frustrating and confusing. I’ve been seeing a psychologist privately for counseling and support who has reasonable working knowledge of learning difficulties and is going more deeply into an autism speciality. She is brilliant and very supportive and is very generous with her time and help. Anyway I believe I have a range of overlapping disabilities of which autism is a part (dyslexia and ADD are also possibilities). What I want to do is do some detailed research into conditions and the treatments available on the market, with a very critical eye, to see if I can make some improvements to my processing speed and also my memory which is very bad. So far I’ve had treatment for dyspraxia with one organization which was about 50% effective and I’ve also been doing brain training from BrainHQ which made some things better and others worse! Clearly there are things out there that do stuff so I am encouraged by that and of the research I’ve done there are loads of different treatments available but it has to be done carefully with all the appropriate information and facts and you can’t really trust the providers of the treatments. The problem I have is that I can‘t really do the research myself because I’m too slow, forgetful, and I get stuck. I have a little bit of money so I’ve put some ads on job sites to try to find someone who would help me with the research. Guess I’m posting here to see if anyone else has tried to do this sort of thing before or if anyone has any ideas where I might be able to find someone to help me with this research or any general thoughts. Anything will be appreciated.
  11. Hi, I am an MSc student at Goldsmiths College: University of London. Myself and another student are currently looking for participants with a diagnosis of ASD or Aspergers, or for individuals who think they may have High functioning Autism or Aspergers but have not yet been diagnosed. Our research is being supervised by Dr. Lorna Goddard. Participants need to be over 18 years of age and be able to travel to Goldsmiths College: University of London SE14 6NW. Research has shown that individuals with ASD/Aspergers have deficits in their mood, aspects of cognitive function and ability to recall memories based on personal experiences. This type of intervention has been found to be successful in improving these abilities. We would meet on 2 occasions 1-2 weeks apart. The first meet will take approximately 2 hour 15 minutes. The second meeting takes approximately 1 hour 30 mins . For more information or if you would like to participate please email me at ps203sm@gold.ac.uk
  12. Here's about a research project, which is (among others) the idea of Sebastian, whom I know well. I personally have taken part, and completed three parts of the Study (A, B, C) so far. They still are looking for more participants for the study in order to complete it - both more autistic and more non-autistic participants. Here are relevant links with more information: Gateway home: http://www.thegatewayproject.org AASPIRE home: http://www.aaspire.org/ ASAN home: http://www.autisticadvocacy.org/ Morton Gernsbacher Lab: http://psych.wisc.edu/lang/intro.html
  13. Hi everyone, I'm a researcher at University College London conducting an experiment into the visual attention ability and time perception ability of high functioning adults with ASD and Asperger syndrome. We think that under some circumstances people with autism might be better than other people at concentrating on a task despite distractions from other information. We hope that the results of our study will help us work out why people with autism find some tasks easier and some tasks more difficult than people without autism. To do this, we're looking for participants to come to Bloomsbury near Euston station for some simple behavioural tasks. We can pay for time and travel expenses up to a certain amount. None of this research can be done without people who are willing to participate in our study! I don't expect anyone to turn up to a study based on a forum post alone, so if you're in the London area and would be interested in taking part or know anyone else who is, please PM me and I'll send you some more information and my email address. Thanks!
  14. I am currently a third year student of Human Geography at the University of Strathclyde. I am doing my dissertation over the summer on adults with Aspergers and their experiences and difficulties when navigating the urban environment and public spaces. I have already been in contact with a few adults with Aspergers who have listened to my proposal and are very keen to become involved in my research as they believe it may aid in having some affect on city planning. I have also made contact with urban planners, designers, architects and council officials who are very interested in participating in my research. My hope is to make contact with other adults with Aspergers who may be interested in participating either by interviews, field work, or keeping an individual diary recording the issues they experience whilst in the urban landscape and in public spaces. It may be worth mentioning I have 2 young sons with Aspergers and therefore, I am sensitive to Aspergers on a personal level. I am also in my late thirties which may make some adults more comfortable with speaking to me. I would be most grateful if anyone would be willing to participate in my research. If you wish confirmation of my identity and intentions please feel free to email my dissertation supervisor Dr Allyson Noble. allyson.nobel@strath.ac.uk I look forward to hearing from you. Best Wishes, Shona Davidson
