  1. Hello, I am a junior designer currently working on a project that aims in creating a more user-friendly and accessible method/guide to guide digital content and other designers on how to create products and services that adapt to adults who live with ADD and ADHD. I myself, have close relatives that live with these conditions and I would like to make the web a safe and more understanding environment in which everyone feels comfortable browsing and carrying out their daily task. This project will be based on public opinion and not medical as I believe that medical data does not apply to everyone. If you are interested in taking part in my research people feel free to private message me. Please find attach my project proposal. All information would confidential and will be kept anonymous. I hope this does not break any forum guidelines!!!:):):) proposal_document_ethics.pdf
  2. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED: -Aged 11-16 years -Children with an Autism Spectrum Diagnosis -Mainstream school AIM: To investigate the connection between the friendships of children diagnosed with ASD and their emotional wellbeing within a mainstream school environment. WHY THIS RESEARCH? As persistent impairments in social interaction and communication are central to a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), many children with ASD experience difficulties in developing friendships and relationships with their peer group. This may place them at a higher risk of social isolation and loneliness which may ultimately lead to the development of mental health problems. Therefore, the impact of friendships is of significant concern to the success of a child’s education. Your participation will be crucial to help further this research. WHO TAKES PART? Children aged 12-16 years WITH (and WITHOUT) an ASD diagnosis and their parents. This research project has been approved by the University of Bath Ethics Committee. Information provided will be kept anonymous and confidential. At no point will the children’s full names or identity be disclosed. HOW TO TAKE PART? The children and their parents will be asked to complete 3 questionnaires each to measure friendships and emotional wellbeing. The study will then compare child and parent perspectives. These questionnaires are online should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. 3. Hey, So, I've always struggled with education environments. Like, school, for example. My brother and I both had 'school refusal' down on our records because the both of us only just got diagnosed ASD (i mean, c'mon. I get that I may've been missed because it's rare that girls get diagnosed in an instant, but my brother is 24!). Anyway, I'm in my second year at college now, which is a struggle but i do love it regardless. I'm staying for a third year because I want to achieve the same A-level grades as everyone else - (i did only 2 igcses and was homeschooled for 2 years before college so im a bit behind) After that, I'd really love to go to University, but im really worried about the issues i might face with it all - work load, responsibility, independence, and mostly - being away from home. of course, I can go to a (fairly) local (kind of) college, but its still a case of being sure I dont have an episode - that i dont waste my money because I have a meltdown and end up having crappy attendance! So, I guess, what im wondering is, Any Aspies been to Uni? What are/were your experiences? or, alternatively, are there any Universities speciffically for people on the spectrum? I know there's a school near where I live that is specially for girls with autism (the school from itv's 'Girls with Autism' Documentary - I went to a 'hospital school' with a girl who goes/went to it) - but i'd already finished school and become out of the age range by the time I knew about it - and by the time i knew i was autistic, even.
  4. Hello, I am a 4th year Psychology student at Heriot Watt University. I am inviting you to take part in a study I am carrying out which is investigating the experience of university life of students with autism and students who have developed typically, attending UK based universities. The study uses a questionnaire which includes; information about yourself, how you spend your time at university, your application to university, your adjustment to university life, your experience of lectures, the support at your university and how you feel about your course. The student experience questionnaire has 7 sections and you will be asked to complete 3 additional short questionnaires to control for mood and personality characteristics. The study will take approximately 70 minutes to complete. Participants can be of any age and gender and we are looking for English speakers/readers. You also do not need to have a particular type of diagnosis of autism. The only request is that you have attended university for at least one year. If you would like to take part please PM me as my online survey is linked to my email and has to be sent out via my personal email. Thank you Please note: I am only looking to recruit participants with an ASD who are currently attending university. I also have full ethical approval from my university ethics board, they have viewed this advert and have allowed me to advertise on the internet.
  5. Hello, my name is Marc Fabri and I lead the European-funded Autism&Uni project. Autism&Uni aims to increase opportunities for young adults on the autism spectrum to succeed in higher education (HE). Many people on the autism spectrum are capable of success at HE level. However, they are likely to be under-represented, even though autism is not an indicator of intellectual ability. Clearly, the transition from school to a university environment can be a very difficult step for someone with autism. We want to support the students in finding out about the challenges they may encounter when applying to, and then settling into university. We will help them learn the skills they need to negotiate student life and studies successfully. Autism&Uni involves people on the autism spectrum and those who support them, right from the start to ensure they have direct influence on designing solutions that work for them. There are three ways to get involved: For young people on the autism spectrum If you are thinking about going to university or you already have university experience, please help us by completing our student survey at www.autism-uni.org/get-involved. For individuals and organisations providing support If you support someone on the autism spectrum, e.g. as a parent, a teacher, lecturer, disability advisor or other autism professional, we would like to learn how you do that and who you work with. Please visit www.autism-uni.org/get-involved. Tell your story We are particularly interested in collecting personal stories from people who have had higher education experiences. These stories will help us determine how future students can best be informed and supported. If you want to share your story – either with your name or anonymously – please go to www.autism-uni.org/get-involved/stories. __________ Autism&Uni has partners in the UK, Finland, The Netherlands, Poland and Spain. The project has been funded with support from the European Commission and runs from October 2013 to May 2016. Web: www.autism-uni.org. Email: autism-uni@leedsmet.ac.uk. 6. Bit of a different theme I guess, but thought I would start a topic here. Currently, my university is choosing which charity to support in the next academic year, one of the shortlisted charities is Autism NI, and I've been organising the election campaign, in order to get as many people to vote as possible. There is 8 shortlisted charities, and the 4 that get the most votes are chosen as the supported charities. I was just wondering if anyone has any previous experience of something like this, and have any advice or tips for me? I've never been great at public speaking, but I am very good at writing online blogs and pieces and explaining things to people, but in person this is a struggle for me, Also, if anyone on here attends Queen's University, fancy voting?! (Worth a try I guess)
  7. Hi, I'm starting a masters degree in English Literature this year and I'm in a bit of a dilemma regarding when, if at all, I tell fellow students that I have pretty strong Asperger's Syndrome. Whilst I am a very emotional person, I don't express it very well at all, so when I did my first degree I suspect that I missed out on making friends and socialising because maybe I gave the impression that I wasn't interested. I was wondering if any of you out there have been in a similar situation and could share what happened. At the moment my plan is to tell my peers that I have AS because, even though I didn't know I had AS when I did my first degree, I didn't share it with anyone and it didn't end up very well. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. - Skaro7
  8. Hi, I'm just starting a PhD in the next few months. I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in 2011. I didn't receive any funding or support during my undergraduate studies. I wondered if anyone had had any success getting a grant for a PhD or higher education? I have looked up the DSA and enquired at the university but we're still quite unsure. Many thanks, Alis
