Minister in autism funding pledge

Recommended Posts

I think i've become too cynical - i hope i've become too cynical and am reading too much into things.

First line said it all for me...

"More funding could be found........" Would have been happier to see 'will be found'. Maybe they're hoping this will quieten the parents and people fighting for out children??

Also.......

"But he said many children already received "very good care and an extremely good education".

Really?????? Where???? And for the few who do, it's usually at the expence of the parents sanity, money and some times relationships amongst other things...................... :( .

Hope i'm wrong :pray::pray:

this is all very interesting but I dont know how it will connect up with the day to day reality of my life, dont get me wrong I stay positive most of the time.

when I complained to my education authority about the total lack of education for my sons, years out of education and no provision the reply was (received last week) that this was a health issue not for education. my son struggled at school from day one and showed all the characteristics of autistic behaviour throughout but it was me who had to research and fund the assessment. (at 18) we were passed between health and education for years, each not taking responsibility but it is shocking to know this is still what thery are doing, even in hindsight.

so if you are unlucky enough to have a GP who knows diddly squat about autism and just packs you off to therpist as a bad parent then you will never get any help. if the schools asks the EP and they also just say oh i dont know you must be a bad parent, and this is what is happening to a lot of people then what do you do. I came across asd info on the web after getting online, if i hadnt then what, we would still have no diagnosis.

the dots are not joined up as far as i can see. sorry I know I am repeating myself but what is really going on with health and education, do they communicate, all this multi-agency talk, but what does it do, form a little gang against you.

I too feel very cynical about this. I can imagine my son's head teacher rubbing her hands with glee, thinking how she is going to spend the money - and it isn't on autism,as she doesn't acknowledge it if she doesn't have to.

And most of the time she doesn't have to. I know the school gets funds for special needs but I don' t know what they are spent on- as he gets nothing to help him, not even class teachers with more than a basic understanding of autism.

There is a huge need for more funding but also it is SO important that funds are spent wisely.

Throwing money at this problem is not going to solve it - certainly not if they are throwing it at Mainstream Schools. It needs to be accepted that many of our children require specialist provision and nothing else will do the job. It's strange that no one has mentioned today that the National Autsim Plan for Children was screaming out for specialist traning for teachers especially while they were training. That plan came out 3/4 years ago now and how far down the road are we to training teachers being trained in ASD? The bricks and motar of what needs to be done are there but no one ever starts to build with them :(

However I also worry that there is now a HUGE lobby for the ABA style of specialist provision Treehouse being one such provision, and while I know that there are many parents who want this kind of provision there are also many who do not. We need a menu of provision because children and adults with autism are more indivdual than individuals if that makes sense.
