PE teacher

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have still been popping in but have not posted in a while!!! Hope you are all well!

K has been ill lately and off school for 1 week due to a flare-up of his arthritis.I sent the following letter in today:-

I wanted to inform you of K's current situation regarding his arthritis. He has

not been very well lately and has not been at school over the past week due

to a severe flare-up of his arthritis in his knees and hips.

He was seen on Wednesday by our GP who wanted to admit him if there was no

change in his condition after a course of steriods. We are due to see the

rheumatologist and we will arrange to get a letter for you stating that

he cannot do P.E. even non-contact sports until his next review.

Please excuse K from P.E. until further notice.

K was given dention by the PE teacher today for not having his PE kit with him even though he was not doing PE. It's apparently the school rules to have a PE kit with you even if you are not doing PE - Why???? NOw they are doing cross country at school and its about 2miles, K said to the teacher today that he cant do (after handing him the above letter). Teacher said that he could walk it. What the .

He has no understanding of his condition even though i have phoned and spoken to him before....

I am so glad that K refused to do it, he knows that its too much for him...

I have phoned the school and tried to speak to the teacher but funny how no one is available...

I am soooooo mad

I would be absolutely fuming!!! How dare they!!! If I was you I would write a very strong letter to the year head and copy it to the PE teacher asking for an explanation. I would then follow it up with a telephone call and if I still didn't get an apology and reassurance that it wouldn't happen again I'd go to the head teacher.

If you send in a letter saying that your GP has said that your son can't do PE, they have no right to treat him like this. It's downright mean and nasty. It's not as if he's coming in saying "I can't do PE because I've got a cold". He has a valid reason. There would also be no way that my child would do a detention for not bringing in a PE kit when there is no way he's fit enough to use it. There can be NO reason he'd need it so it's a completely ridiculous rule in your son's case.

My daughter is just recovering from pneumonia and luckily her school have been fantastic. She hasn't done PE at all this half term and can go to the library to do her homework instead.

Don't let them get away with this. I'm outraged on your behalf!!!:angry::angry:

I'm with Lisa on this ................. :angry::angry::angry::angry:

I'd be furious - I'd be writing letters and arranging meetings (see if you can get the consultant to contact the school directly as well).

Thats a disgusting way to treat a child. There taking what may be a disappointment to your son as maybe he feels like he wishes he could participate and making it ten times worse. Your son deserves an apology for the way this 'teacher' has treated him. I would be parked outside the heads office tomorrow til he found time to speak to me. It's really not on if they have a problem with the letter ie they dont' agree he should miss PE etc (though I can't imagine why they would but schools huh you never know  ) they should take it up with the parent not the child ever. I'm total shocked by there attitude I mean detention for no pe kit when your not doing pe are the joking!!

let us know how it goes hope your son is feeling better soon - oh can you stop them giving him the detention?

take care

What a nasty piece of work that PE teacher is. You have every right to be furious. Is there a parent governor that you would be comfortable discussing this with?

That is utterly disgusting. I'd be going to see the HT sharpish. Surely there must be guidelines they must adhere to re PE and the health and safety of pupils. What would they of done had K done the walk and collapsed? Good grief...

Hi if you do decide to complain put it in writing and send to HT and the chair of governors.Personaly I would not send in pe kit in this situation. The reason being that I would not trust the pe teacher to not try to make my child do pe-If they are so unreasonable. Is it possible that the teacher did not read the letter and is attempting to get out of the predicament they are in ? karen

That's unforgiveable of the teacher and the school to ignore such a serious medical condition, it's disgusting!! Is it possible to go in and see these people face to face? They can't ignore that so easily. Or what if your doctor wrote to or telephoned the school personally?

Good luck. Don't blame you for being mad! >:D<<'>

Perhaps you could also point out that carrying "surplus kit" would add to the weight that the child has to carry round all day, and that decreasing the strain on your son's joints should be an urgent priority?

If it were my child, I'd also be suggesting, in writing, that in ignoring the medical advice (submitted on ..(date).. to the school in writing) the school could find itself responsible for any further damage that is done to your son's joints - a position both the school and you would obviously prefer to avoid.

My OH had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and it has left his body in a mess, frankly, which recent x-rays have shown (we weren't told the full extent of the damage when he was "released" as a child from the specialists). The thought of your son being made to walk 2 miles with active arthritis, when the medical advice is as it is, leaves me cold. The school is out of order here and must be forced, if necessary, to act more responsibly.

:o:o:o:o:o:angry:

That's disgustingly, utterly outrageous.....

Who the heck do they think they are???

If they can't make 'reasonable adjustments' for your son's medical condition then they are contravening the education and disability acts.

They've ignored your letter; they've treated your son in such a way which could agravate his condition.

I'd tell them to stuff their detention, their PE kit where the son don't shine (well don't really say that, but you know what I mean  ) and that if they can't accomodate your son when he has a flair up of his arthritis, not only will you keep him off school until they do you will be making a complaint to the DRC, the DfES etc about their inclusion policy, or lack there of, and their discrimination.

I cant tell you how livid I am about the PE teacher, and I have had a day to calm down.

We had app with Rheumatologist, she was very adement that he should not do any form of PE whilst he has inflammation or pain, she will write a letter for me excusing K from PE until further notice.....

She is concerned that his blood test is a bit raised, because the methoxerate is such a potent medicine especially for kids she has to be careful that is does not affect his bone marrow so we are going to have to have more tests....

He might have to have injections into his hips to help with pain, we will just see how the steriods work or not...

Both hubby and I have phoned and left messages, even the receptionist recognised my voice (and accent South African), hubby said he is going to the school on thurs morning at 8.30 and he will not be leaving until he is seen.... God help that school the XXXX is gonna hit the fan....

Hope your hubby got some action this morning.

Take care,

Now most of the time I'll try to see both sides of the coin, but this one seems to be a 'double header':lol::lol:

At the risk of stereotyping it would HAVE to be a PE teacher, wouldn't it (well... yeah... okay, it's a PE lesson, so it would have to have to be a PE teacher, wouldn't it!).

He's an idiot - go get him!

I am so angry (although sadly from my own experiences not suprised) by this.

I hope you and hubby gave them hell!

as if your child is not suffering enough (and yourselves of course) why do some people have to make hard situations worse when they are in the position to make them even slightly more bearable!

Reading stories like this make me wonder where the hell these teachers get trained! I am not suprised though, I had similar problems when I went to school (I left a year and a half ago) My mum wrote in a letter, and my PE teacher then asked what exactly my reason for not being able to do PE was in front of everyone in my class! I then told her I did not want to discuss it in front of everyone, and then she asked why!!!

I really hope that it gets sorted out, and that your son gets all the help and understanding he needs >:D<<'>

Some teachers are child haters. Honestly. The best way for a child hater to make the most impact is to work in an environment with children where they can readily dish out oppression and misery.
