trekster Report post Posted January 13, 2010 Just so you know - you can download a version to fill in on a pc at: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/DisabledPeople...nce/DG_10011925 anyway - just a few q's I'm not sure if I qualify - I have no problems washing, dressing, cooking, but have mild-moderate coordination problems, and communication/socialising - should I still apply? You mention no problems with cooking, what about shopping for the food, preparing the meal from scratch and then cooking without burning all on your own? Could you cook a roast chicken with potatoes, vegetables and gravy for example? Having 3 or more pans on the go at once? Also if you were interrupted by something unexpected (fire alarm, phone ringing knock on the door, loud bang) would you be able to continue with the cooking without being distressed? The problem is ive heard if you can manage to cook meals then it's harder to get DLA. i know of one asperger (only 1 and it was 12 years ago) who was refused dla on the grounds he could cook meals. The communication/socialising i would definitely apply for that reason but im unsure about the cooking. Also - a lot of troubles aren't things I usually need others help with - but can usually cope with myself - again does that matter? Don't mention in detail what you can do. and - when it asks how many days a week I need help - that can vary, what should I put? it mentions a three month qualifying period - is this from the date you submit the form? and finally - where it asks how long you've had the condition - should I just put "lifelong"? ta. For the number of days a week i would put the maximum that you have required help. Use a worse case scenario with each comment you put down. Not sure about the 3 month qualifying period could be that it takes up to 3 months to process. i know any money you are awarded is backdated to the time you submitted the form. Put n/a congenital (meaning from birth) since most research suggests autism is congenital. Alexis

trekster Report post Posted February 10, 2010 am gonna talk to DP about appealing our decision as based on the above he should have got something, he cannot prepare a meal undistracted for sure! i mentioned things like problems with lifting a kettle with one hand, timing when somethings going to be cooked, any instances of overcooking something that set off a fire alarm (had a smoky kitchen due to overcooking food twice now). Also what would happen if he was distracted, ie would he go back to the meal and know what had to be done next. Alexis

Tally Report post Posted April 15, 2010 I have just received my renewal form. I think I know how to fill in my bit, mostly by copying my last application form really. Just scared it will be assessed differently this time, and my GP may not support my claim.
leeds_demon Report post Posted January 7, 2012 I found out today that I have been turned down for DLA. The NAS is useless, inasmuch as they don't give you any information as to what to write for each question. I was led to believe that if a person can't cook a meal from scratch, then they might get help. I get easily stressed when cooking a meal & I usually end up eating say around 8pm, because I end up surfing the net and forget to put the oven on. I don't socialise as I don't have any friends - in fact I don't like socialising. I don't like strange people, such as plumbers, etc, coming into my house and I don't like people using my bathroom. Can someone explain how I, someone with Asperger's is able to get some help? I am also wondering if the new Personal Independence Payment will actually take into account the various traits experienced by those of us with Asperger's. Kazzen161 Report post Posted January 7, 2012 Filling in the forms is not striaghtforward - did you have anyone to help you? The wording of your replies is important. You could ask for help to fill inthe form at the CAB.
Tally Report post Posted January 8, 2012 I didn't find the NAS information that helpful either. What it does do is help you to collect the right information. Then it's down to you to work out what bits to write where. There is a website called Benefits and Work which a lot of people recommend for help with appealing DLA. There is a fee but apparently it is well worth it.
leeds_demon Report post Posted January 10, 2012 If you want to receive DLA then the only thing you can do is lie. I have no mobility issues and do not need care and yet, I can only work for 10 hours a week, due to my lack of slef-motivation. If the agency, for which I do telemarketing, decides to dispense with my services, (I am a self-employed telemarketer), then I have no income, unless I apply for JSA. Today, I learnt that I will receive £97.20 a week in Housing Benefit, instead of the £103 -odd I was getting, due to the fact that I earn £320 a month. My landlord has asked me to contribute an extra £10 a month, maybe a bit more. If I did claim DLA, then I would lose more HB, so I'm in a quandry. But what I do know is that Aspies are one group of disabled people who are being denied DLA, even though they are disabled. Asperger's Syndrome is deemed to be a disability and yet most of us are denied DLA in the first instance. And the NAs does faff all.

You can write down how things are on a bad day which is what i have done. i didn't get my DLA via lying. Cant you apply for ESA if you loose your contract? Your description appears that you are loosing less than you need to pay extra to your landlord. Why would claiming a non means tested benefit ie DLA mean you loose your housing benefit? I'm on both. i know of aspies (and auties) that arent denied DLA my friends in my social circle, they've happened to have applied via benefits and work and various other agencies to get their money. im guessing the NAS welfare email address was unable to help you? trekster Report post Posted June 28, 2012 Other tips when applying for DLA is explain what would happen if someone couldnt help you, explain what happened when you didnt have help, explain any routines that take longer than a non disabled person, explain what other people can do to help and why they have to understand your disability. Knowing who to and how to ask for help is common amongst this population. Another resource ive found helpful for any assessment is... http://sacramentoasis.com/docs/8-22-03/taking_responsibility.pdf I've used the 'Practical Support Services' section writen pages and pages (extra pages are good for DLA applications) on what mine and sometimes others needs are to help them get the moeny they deserve. One of my firends was turned down year after year, she scanned in her report and as i suspected she just needed help filling in her form. She was awarded DLA and is very happy. tlavery@live.co.uk Report post Posted November 10, 2012 Hiya Floz, good to see you. Great news about the DLA. L has an indefinite DLA award too. I don't know exactly what it means either. I'm hoping it means "for ever" - but that may be a bit naive. Hope Bill is doing well, indefinate means they can look at claim at anytime used 2 be 4 life but changed it 2 indefinate K x

Special_talent123 Report post Posted November 10, 2012 (edited) Indefinite actually means for a long time... but the changes to PIP. Indefinite award mine has not been relooked at since 18 years old in·def·i·nite/inˈdefənit/ Adjective: Lasting for an unknown length of time: "indefinite detention" Edited November 10, 2012 by Special_talent123
