Hi openyoureyes

I've got no personal experience of this but I'm sure someone will come along who has.

In the meantime here's some useful information on the Dyslexia Action site which tells you how to go about getting an assessment. The rest of the site is worth a look too.

Hope this helps

Hi,

Both my kids are dyslexic and both dx in different ways. Dd I paid for private dx with Dyslexia Insitiute as aschool was dragging their heels. When she was found to have dyslexia school put in extra support. The report was very full and detailed and I fel it helped geting it from a more reputable source in that dyslexia is the main concern of the organisation rather than just going to a private ed psch if that makes sense!!

With ds I was told by ed psych he would take years to dx but his difficulty was so apparent anybody could see it. I was told until his behaviour etc settled down he would be recorded as having dyslexic tendencies. Ds attends a communication clinic run and the dr there is great and she tested him(ed psych said he is impossible to assess) and she has said he is clearly dyslexic and needs to be treated as such.

I am a firm believer in if you have doubts get them checked out. Some schools don't accept a private dx but if you have it it is more evidence that can help your case!

Hi J has Dyslexia and was picked up very early in school but they didnt actually diagnose him as Dyslexia on his spersific Dyslexia Test they signed him as Dyslexic Profile, so he went throw school unable to read, write and understand anything that the teachers gave him if he couldnt read it first, even maths as some of the questions where text.

J was severly struggling with any work and though school knew he was getting letters back to front they insisted he tried harder, in spellings he got marked wrong when all that J j had done was get the letters back to front, he became demolerised and in the end he would not work, even now.

J was assessed at a dyslexia awareness day and then we paid for a more thora test costing 60 but as we get benefits he paid 25 in the assessment the psychologist was so shocked in all areas he did he was struggling, she said he is Dyslexic and severly so not only was he dyslexic he was very dislexic in the way that he processes the information and then the way he wants to anser it doesnt come easy for him.

He has a reading age of 6yrs of age and possibly even younger because the lowest range was 6yrs.

Spellings was the same and the assessment showed inconsistant understanding as some he scored really really high whilst some they couldnt register it.

J is on the 2nd percentile for reading.

Dyslexia is a spersific learning disability and will require specialist trained teachers to understand it, J recieved over 2 years of support and he has struggled throw out it, and he finds it so hard he is refusing to go anymore, I am a lost what to do because without this spersific support he will almost certainly fail in secondary schooling if left unsupported.

Js School take him out of English and do spersific targets set for him, he adores the computer and so a lot of what he does is c d rom based and they have provided a bank of words on the PC for him to access.

J writes on a whiteboard so he can rub out mistakes and he has things written out first and he copies, J is very reluctant to write though his handwriting is very neat if copied.

School support J with understanding Js Dyslexia and so he is lucky, there is lots of kids out there with it and no one is picking it up and it can lead to poor self esteem, low confidence, and in particular boys poor classroom behaviour because they dont want to bring attention to their work and so act up and get thrown out hopefully.

I would ask the school for a Dyslexia test and see what they come up with, the mad thing is when I went to college they screen all students for Dyslexia and if prooved to have it is given specialist support with money available for extra equiptment, but yet in the most influential place of primary all they can do is suggest Dyslexic Traits, the damage is beyond the pen if left untreated.

recommend some books on Dyslexia too as spersific reading can lead you to further services and practical solutions at home.

I am dx dyslexic. School as usal said no problem "Lazy, slow, misbehaves, disruptive" thats the problem! Mum was not happy with this so went to a PATOSS meating locally where she saw our next door neighbour! Anyway she said she would test me as she tests at a local school with a dyslexia unit attached to school. She did and the dx severe specific learning difficulty (dyslexic) school still wouldn't except it! However college does!
