SarahSH Report post Posted August 15, 2007 Hi everyone looks like we might be moving to oxfordshire next year, and wondered if anyone has any tips on ASD type stuff there for teenagers - groups, facilities, schools ( with sixth form ) etc. or just where's a good place to live!!! My son is going to be starting college/sixth form of some description then, although really not sure what kind of course he might do. he's brainy but v disorganised so I'm not sure if he'd cope with A levels, although he's not at all practical, in fact dyspraxic, so most vocational type alternatives are no good. I'm thinking ahead here; hope it doesn't seem too crazy because we've got the whole year 11 thing to get through yet where we are at the moment, but will probably move next summer and I want to do my homework now so that we look for a house in the right place. thanks very much Sarah
Bard Report post Posted August 15, 2007 I think Mel who posts as oxgirl, is still on holiday in Ireland. She lives in North Oxfordshire, and has been fighting the system a while! You could pm her and see what happens.
Faithnomore Report post Posted August 16, 2007 (edited) OASIS and Autism Family Support. OASIS is Oxfordshire Autistic Society for Information and Support and costs 12 a year to join, but worth it as they organise playdays in the school holidays and are a valuable source of help and info. Autism Family Support are based at Thomley Hall in Worminghall(bucks), they have groups for AS/HFA teenagers. Can't advise on schools as my experience so far is not good, DS1 has been out of school for a year now - but this is only in Oxford itself not the county as a whole. SarahSH Report post Posted August 17, 2007 Thanks very much bard and faithnomore. I'll get in touch with OASIS - might even be good to get a bit involved early to prepare the ground for the move. really appreciate your help Sarah
oxgirl Report post Posted August 18, 2007 Hiya Sarah, I'm back from Ireland, but, as Bard said, I'm in North Oxon. and do feel free to PM me anytime if you want any more info. My lad is nearly 14 and, while there is a lot on offer for younger kids, there is less for older able kids. There are a few holiday activities organized, as Faithnomore said, and there is a social club for able teens but we haven't given that a go as it's a bit too far for us to go. They're talking about setting up a new social club nearer to where I am but that won't be for a while yet I shouldn't think. Shires Spectrum Support group is in Banbury. Don't know if they organize holiday activities though. Anyway, keep in touch and good luck if you do decide to move. ~ Mel ~

I don't know how to PM, but would be interested to find out a bit more about the social club for able teens that you mention. It's pretty likely that we will move. I'll be to-ing and fro-ing next year to Oxfordshire for work while my son and stepson do their gcses, but the chances are we'll move when they finish the year. all the best, Sarah
