Just found out about this today ... missed the earlybird price :(

Perspectives on Autism

Thursday 8 November 2007, Chelmsford

A practically focused one-day conference for the children's workforce

The prevalence of Autism continues to rise and it is vital for people working with children and young people to recognise its symptoms and understand how individuals and their families can be supported.

The Faculty of Education is delighted to offer a one-day conference to children's workforce staff in partnership with Sunfield Professional Development Centre and the University's Music Therapy Team. The Faculty has expertise in education, teacher training and learning disability. Across our other faculties there is a valuable pool of knowledge and research activity in Autism and learning disability; most notably in the Music Therapy Team within the faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences but also within the Departments of Psychology and Mental Health & Learning Disability Studies.

Sunfield Professional Development Centre based at Sunfield, is a national UK charity specialising in the care and education of children with severe and complex learning needs. The Faculty of Education is very pleased to be working with Sunfield on this high profile conference.

Benefits for Participants

Whether training or working in the education, health or social services sectors this conference will give participants a general understanding of what help and support is available for children and young people with autism and how they can contribute to this.

In particular by the end of the day participants will have:

* Raised awareness of the psychological aspects of autism

* An understanding of how children's workforce staff can work more effectively with families affected by autism

* An overview of how structured teaching approaches benefit autistic children

* An appreciation of the benefits of music therapy

* Met and shared experiences with others involved in working with children

* Discussed ideas for applying what they have learnt to their current or future experiences in the workplace
