Jake is almost nine, and his behaviour is challenging to say the least. His school have asked for him to be assessed by the CAMHS, because they suspect Aspergers. My husband and I are a bit shell shocked to say the least, but I am glad to have found this site. I am sure we will get some great help from here. flutterfly Report post Posted July 17, 2005 Hi everyone.. My daughter laura whos 7 is on the waiting list to be diagnosed with ASD. She has been statemented for 2 years now and is in mainstream school. But not doing well at the moment. She comes home at 11.30am for the day as she cant handle afternoons. I must say the teachers find it very hard handling her too. Just amazing really that shes perfectly ok at home. Im also waiting for a decision for DLA. fingers crossed. Was in mainstream primary, could not cope, so we took him out and have been home edding whilst trying to find appropriate provision Have already been reading the posts on this site, and can see that there is some great advice being offered. Im currently a Nurse student specialised in the learning disability branch at the university of Sheffield. I originally come from North Hertfordshire about 30 miles north of London. Im involved in setting up a group here in South Yorkshire that I hope will be a catalyst for a yorkshire wide regional group by people with aspergers and related conditions for people with Aspergers et al. Just want to say to all the people waiting for anwser. Be patient and wait. Thats what i did which was VERY hard but we did get a reply last week to say that my daughter is able to get help with DLA. 007paul007 Report post Posted August 2, 2005 Hi My name is Paul , that was hard wasn't it lol, I have 2 children with special needs , my daughter who is 13 has mild learning difficulties mainly to do with speech. My son who is 16 has Autism and is at the severe end of the spectrum , having no speech etc, just recently he has been diagnosed with Epilepsy and could also have Irratable bowel syndrome. I live in Bucks and I am always badgering my local councillors and MP's trying to get them to do things for children with special needs in the area. for example I am trying to get the local swimming pool to do a special hour for people with disabilities and was told by a town councillor to hire the pool , so that is one fight amongst others that I am having. I am also a member of a group called Autism on Ebay , which is for parents and professionals alike who can post topics and discuss various things based on their experiences , granted it is not as big as Krism but we have only been going 2 months and we always welcome new members , here is the link if you are interested http://groups.ebay.co.uk/forum.jspa?forumID=100010794 I think that should say it all for now . Box-Of-Frogs Report post Posted August 3, 2005 Hello everyone! I have been lurging on this site for a while now and have finally plucked up the courage to join in! In fact this is probably the first time I've managed to come here and not end up in tears. Our daughter Maisie (6) is currently going through a multi disciplinary assessment initiated by Maisie's senco at school after many years of wondering! Since finding this site and reading the many posts it has become as clear as day that Maisie has Aspergers. She also shows all the classic signs of ADHD. Everywhere I read I see Maisie! It's been quite an emotional discovery. I will continue to read through all the helpful advice and have many questions buzzing around in my head which I will try to put into posts that make sense! mossgrove Report post Posted August 3, 2005 Paul Our local swimming pool does a one-hour session on two Sundays a month specifically for children with Autism and their families. The session is organised by a local support group and all peole swimimg pay �1 which must be a fraction pf the true cost as it is a big 'fun' pool with wave machine, waterslides etc. and there are about half a dozen lifeguards on duty to look after about 50 or so swimmers. We have the entire place to ourselves. It is wonderful to see children enjoying themselves without being overwhelmed which happens easily at any other time as the pool is normally very busy indeed. They have a big thread going about their thoughts on Eugene having Aspergers, and somewhere along the line this site got linked, so here I am! I am Leila (26), I have a 9 year old son Ben. He was vaguely diagnosed with Autism, and "Severe developmental/language delays" when he was 4-5 years old. He attended a special school for a couple of years and then got a placement in a mainstream school. He is statemented. I get very angry and upset because I have still never been given a firm diagnosis-people tell me he can't be autistic or have Aspergers because he "Makes eye contact" and because he cries and loves to cuddle-aaaagh what do they know..... I also get very confused because I feel like a fraud that's trying to convince everyone her sons something he is not-even some of his teachers at school try to make out that he's "Just a normal kid, all kids can be hectic". Then he comes home with his trousers back to front and books missing because his so-called one-to-one helper treats him as though he is "Normal". I am so happy to have found this place, I feel stupid but I never realised there would be forums about Aspergers on the internet. At last perhaps I can feel a little reassurred that neither I nor my son are crazy!! Sorry to moan, I don't know anyone else with Aspergers or similar, so have not been able to share experiences with anyone so far.....We live in a small backwards place where people can be quite ignorant and narrow-minded, which doesn't help either. I have a partner, Simon, and we have two labradors-Busta (black), and his daughter Chewie(yellow). Ben latest obsessions as of August 5th 2005 (things can change fast-LOL) are: BUGS/INSECTS VOLCANOS EXTREME WEATHER (TORNADOS/HURRICANES/TSUNAMIS ETC.) MAPS One great thing is, I feel like I've learned more from Ben than I ever did at school, and at least life is never boring! So happy to have found this forum, and hello to you all! Leila. DaisyProudfoot Report post Posted August 5, 2005 Hi Everyone, I've just joined the throngs of ASD parents, grandparents etc as my 9 year old son has just been diagnosed with Aspergers (he's number 4 of 5 kids). We always knew he was different and finally someone in the medical profession listened to us, which was so good. Since I've been able to read up on this syndrome it has really opened my eyes and I've become a lot closer to my son as a result and him to me. After all these years I now know why he doesn't come up for a cuddle like his twin sister, why he gets so distraught when I try to get him to wear a pair of shorts, why the computer is his best friend (along with another boy with Aspergers), why he's obsessed with gift shops, why he breaks down when his soft boiled egg is hard (was - never is now!) - so many questions answered and that's just the tip of the iceberg. I understand my son at last, and now he cuddles me - it's a bit odd, head down so I only get the top of his head, a bit stiff around the arms but he's learning this valuable social skill, along with many others. squishychick Report post Posted August 5, 2005 Hi my name is Fi I have just found this site (don't ask how - I think I was sort of surfing ) I am so glad to find something like this for us in the UK. Well a little bit about my family - we are Fi, Bruce and Joshua. Bruce and I are teachers, me in special needs, him in mainstream. Joshua has just turned 6 and is at a catholic school. We also have Sam the Basset hound. We had a dx of AS with ADHD for Joshua nearly 2 years ago. We think Bruce has it (never diagnosed) and the dog is now displaying AS traits We are struggling with things at the moment and I hope that I can just bend a few ears (and also listen willingly to those who need to have a chat as well). it is very hard as no-one seems to know much in the real world. J's school is not being very helpful at the moment and sometimes it seems like a big hurdle. On a lighter note here is one of Joshua's jokes. Why did the whale cross the road? emma hirst Report post Posted August 7, 2005 Hi My name is Emma and I have a 4 year old daughter , Sally who is currently being assessed and monitored for communication and social difficulties . They aren't committing themselves to a diagnosis yet as her comprehension is no measurable on any scale yet, but it has been suggested that she go to a specialist AS unit attached to a mainstream primary. We are currently going through the statementing process, and it has been alarmingly fast...in fact we feel quite unprepared to write our report yet, but are cobbling something together. We haven't had any real help yet except some speech therapy, and we are designing a visual timetable and little book for Sally to explain reception and school to her...has this been successful for anyone else?
