Hello and welcome Bev! :)

Glad you could join us! Your frustrations sound so common, so I expect 'others' will pop up soon to empathise and support you.

One thing that I have learned, is that where they cannot place a child into a specific part of the spectrum,..like Aspergers,...they leave them with the diagnosis of ASD. Whether this enhances support you will receive within the Education sector, will very much depend upon your own individual LEA.

My very best wishes to you all.

Also a hello and welcome to Rhyn Essence! :) Thank you for sharing your background. Hope your wife posts also,...I couldn't fail to notice you said she was in Education!

Is that flutterings in the Bat Cave I hear from Jester?!!

Kind regards,

Elefan

It is fun, Isn't it?

Nice to meet you, Bev and Rhyn Essence too.(hope I spelled that right!!)

Bev, my son, now 6, was a bit of a puzzle to the psychiatrist too. Finally got a DX of AS after 2 years, but you'll get there. Only thing I can advise is to make as much noise as poss. They don't like to give a DX until they're fairly sure......

Rhyn, I've heard of Kleinefelyer's syndrome. Wasn't it featured on a recent documentary on Ch4? You must've been through an awful lot!!!

Hope to chat with you soon!

Yes well K.Syn was featured on CH4 and I watched it hoping that it would explore the "emotional difficulties" as the prog advert intoned. Maybe I was distracted by a sudden gust of wind unless of course both of us mentally switched off because as I recall it centered on something completely different  To be honest I don't actually identify myself as a potiential transsexual and have no desire to dress up. though I have been known to do it for a laugh :o erm :D

Hello all, great to find this site. I am a mum to 4, our 7 year old son was diagnosed with AS in November last year. It has been a difficult time for all of us, not least as we are a "restructured" family, consisting of a 12 yr old, 10 yr old & 7 yr old who are my birth children & our 7 year old withAS who is my step son we all live as a family with limited input from absent parents.

I'm hoping the site might stop us from pulling our hair out!! B)

I think that she's trying to say hello!!

You'll have to excuse the... interesting... sense of humour. Some of our members have passed the point of no return. I'd suggest a visit to the Batcave in General Discussion to learn more. Be warned though you may not escape with your sanity.

But... welcome to our forum. I hope you are able to find the information you need, unwind or maybe sound off when necessary.

Hi just in case you are wondering I am Clair, married to Adie with three kids, Elise, Srevie and Aston. I am awaiting a diagnosis for Aston the youngest, 6 years old, most likely Aspergers. I have been fighting for a diagnosis since he was three, I originall thought it was ADHD. My sister is a speech therapist and mentioned it could be Aspergers as she had her own concerns. The more I read the more I am convinced. Luckily after getting the school and CDC to take me seriously they called in an Ed psych who said she didnt know how I had coped at home with him. "at last". I can honestly say I think I am going crazy at times as when the school say that all has not gone well with him in the day I think I am going to laugh. I dont mean to be funny but when you tell them for so long that you are having problems at home and they cant see it at school, it becomes amusing to see the teachers face when she cant believe the way he is being now. I think to myself "yeah get on and push it through your channels then instead of telling me", I already know what he is like. I was so glad to find this site, I have never been a one for forums but I have found myself having a look more and more. I will post as time goes on if I can help but really I am a bit of a lost newbie.

Speak soon

Clair.

Hi everyone,

I've really enjoyed reading the postings. Not yet grasped how everything works but will keep trying. I have a son age 13 and daughter age 11. My son was diagnosed with Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) in 1996. I always knew he was different since he was a baby, and he was extremely hard work from day 1. Eventually got a statement by year 5, then he refused to go to school and was out of school for 18 months. He now goes to a weekly boarding school which he never refuses to go to on Monday mornings so I take that as meaning he is happy there. He rarely talks about school (he cant remember things that have happened when he changes location so home and school life are kept totally seperate) He is very animated when he initiates conversation, which is usually about films, computer or PS2 games or science.

Living with him before he went to boarding school was very stressful. Due to the pressure he felt from school, his verbal and physical aggression was becoming intolerable due to his rapid growth and increased strength. He is a changed person over the year he has been at his new school, more tolerant when he comes home at weekends and is now rarely physically or verbally abusive. Still struggling with getting him to attend to personal cleanliness, rarely brushes his teeth! When I send him to the bathroom he pretends to do it (wets toothbrush to fool me). Same with washing hair: wets his hair but wont use shampoo and hopes I dont notice.

My daughter probably has ADHD (not diagnosed) doesnt sit still for a moment, plays sport every day and needs this to get rid of excess energy. She gets into trouble at school for fidgeting and distracting other kids and her teacher once described her as being like a 'Meercat'!

I'm sure I will enjoy reading all your messages and getting to know everyone

Your teeth and hair are awful auriel

Stop picking on Auriel, boys will be boys! My son is almost five and I darent brush his teeth, his bite is worse than Jaws! Believe me I have tried everything, superhero toothbrushes with batteries, he just chews the bristles off!

As for the hair, well, I just give him a no. 2 - have you seen the sheep shearers in Aussie, you have to be dead quick - I get his head in a half Nelson and three strokes later he's done!

In fact need to tackle hair problems later, as he has caught nits from playgroup - sigh! - easiest solution is to shave it all off!

He does look cute with no hair!

Hiya all,

New around here, just found this forum and seeing as everyone else is doing an intro I may as well join in!

I'm Sarah, married (for my sins) to Ian and we have 2 children, Alex and Lydia. Alex is 8 and has dx's of ASD, ADHD, dyspraxia, severe migraine disorder, hyperlexia, hyper+hypotonia, pelvic/trunk/shoulder instabilities and finally anxiety disorder! He's a lovely little lad, very complex to say the least! He goes to an ASD specific unit (we did the mainstream thing - never again!) and he's been there for 2 years or so and is doing well. He's made alot of progress these last 2 years and I personally beleive in the ASD specific approach, its worked for Alex and there should be more provision like that around. He's very gifted in maths and could read before he could talk properly, but writing - urgh! He hates it and will do just about anything to avoid it!

Lydia is 3 and is definetly becoming more of a puzzle each day! She is beautiful, chirpy with huge blue eyes! She's in pre-school one day per week where she is currently getting 1 to 1. She enjoys it and likes to go but really doesnt *get* the other children. She toewalks, stims, twirls, flaps, has echolalia etc etc etc. Her speech isnt brilliant, her pronunciation isnt very good and much of what she says is echolalia but its coming on - slowly. We are currently waiting for an appointment for her for CDC, she was seen there last year but they weren't sure if she was copying her brother or not, well we are 1 year on and we are pretty sure she isnt copying her brother! So here we go again, at least this time we know the score.

Ian, hubby, is *in computers* and is in my mind *somewhere* on the spectrum. Me, well I'm just stressed!

Thats about it for now.

Sarah

Welcome to the forum Sarah, :)

You have had your share of problems, I'm not surprised you're stressed!

It's good to hear that your son is getting specialist support in school and yes, I agree, there should be more places like that.

I hope you find lots of information and support here and maybe have a laugh to ease the stress. Look forward to chatting with you.

Nellie.
